Chapter 5.

No… please… Victor”

I jerked awake, my chest rising and falling rapidly as the nightmare clung to me like a shadow I could never outrun.

My fingers gripped the bedsheet tightly. After five years… it still felt so real. The pain. The betrayal. The way he chose her… without thinking twice.

I shut my eyes. Took a few deep breaths.

It was over.It had been over for years.

His name still had power over me.

I got out of bed. Headed to the kitchen needing something to ground me. I poured myself a cup of coffee and the bitter smell slowly brought me back to reality.

Five years.Five years since I left New York.Five years since I left him.Five years since I left everything behind.Dubai gave me a life. A quieter one.I built myself from scratch.I became a coach then got promoted and now I'm the head of my department.

A life I fought hard for.A life that had nothing to do with Victor Vale. At least… that's what I kept telling myself.

“Mummy?”

My daughter's small voice broke through my thoughts.I turned around. My heart melted when I saw her standing in the hallway.

Aria. My daughter. My world. She rubbed her eyes still wrapped in her blanket.I walked over to her. Knelt down.

“Hey baby, " I said softly. "Did you have a dream?”She shook her head then looked up at me.

“You did.” I froze for a second… then forced a smile. “I’m okay.” She didn't look convinced. She nodded and leaned into me.

I held her close. Because she was the good thing that came out of that nightmare of a life. Victor… would never take that away from me. Never.

The office was already busy when I arrived. I welcomed the distraction.Work had always been my escape.Something I could control.Something that didn’t hurt.

A knock. Before I could respond Ethan walked in like he owned the place.

“ Morning, " I said, raising a brow. "You’re early.”“Not a morning " he muttered, running a hand through his hair.

That was new.I leaned back slightly. "What happened?”He hesitated. Then said the one thing I never wanted to hear

“I’m flying to New York.” My fingers froze around my mug.

New York. That one word was enough to drag up memories I buried deep.I looked away casually pretending it didn’t affect me.

“Work?" I asked.“Yeah. Big merger deal.”

I nodded. Something about his tone felt… off. “What company?" I asked, out of habit rather than interest.

Ethan hesitated again.Then.. “Vale Group.”

The mug slipped slightly in my hand. For a second I thought I misheard him. I didn’t.

Victor. He was still there. Still powerful.

Still… untouchable.

I let out a breath steadying myself.

“Sounds important " I said calmly even though my pulse had picked up.Ethan studied me for a moment like he was trying to read my reaction but I gave him nothing.

I had learned that the hard way. Never show weakness. After he left, I sat in silence for a time.

Vale Group..Victor Vale..After all these years… he was still finding a way to appear in my life.I let out a breath and turned to my laptop forcing myself to focus.

Emails.Work.Anything but him. That’s when I saw it. A new message. From a New York law firm. My heart dropped. For a second fear crept in.

Did they know? Did someone find out about Aria? My hands moved quickly as I opened it. I read the message once. Then again. Then a third time. My eyes widened.

My grandmother… She had left everything to me. Her estate. Her company.

Everything. There was one condition.

I had to return to New York to claim it.

My stomach twisted. No. No… this couldn’t be happening. Not now. Not when I had finally moved on. Going back meant facing him. Facing the past I ran from. Facing the man who broke me.

My grip tightened on the desk. I couldn’t do it. I wouldn’t do it. Then.. My eyes drifted back to the email.

There was one line I hadn’t fully processed. A legal representative had already been assigned. My breath caught as I read the name.

Victor Vale. My blood ran cold.

Before I could even process it my phone suddenly rang loudly on the desk making me jump. Unknown number. I stared at it for a second. Then it rang again..Again..

Something in my chest tightened. Slowly… I picked it up. My fingers trembled slightly as I answered.

“…Hello?” There was silence.Then..

A familiar voice I hadn’t heard in five years. “Rita.” My heart stopped.

“I’ve been looking for you.”

My eyes were fixed on the papers in front of me. I had not read a word in the last five minutes."I do not do things halfway " I said to him."That is not what I asked you, " he said, pressing me for an answer.I let out a breath and put the pen down. "Then ask what you really want to know."Ethan leaned forward a little, his eyes sharp. "Are you ready for what this will bring?"Victor. The past. Everything I had buried.I froze. "I do not have the luxury of not being ready." I said. The door opened before Ethan could say anything "Mr. Hayes, they are ready for you " his assistant said.Ethan looked at me for a long time like he wanted to say more. Then he stood up."We will talk later." I gave a nod, already pulling back into myself. Because conversations like that one require honesty. Honesty is dangerous. The moment the door sh

I said calmly, "No, I am moving exactly as I should."There was silence. I could feel Ethan's eyes on me studying me, questioning me. "You have only been back a few days Rita.. You have already started shaking things up. The board is unsettled." Ethan said.I replied simply "Good." Because when people are unsettled they make mistakes.. I needed them to make mistakes.Ethan exhaled, leaning back slightly. "Vale Group is watching, " he said.My pen paused for a second. Victor..Of course Victor was watching.I closed the file. Finally looked at Ethan. "Let them watch, " I said. His gaze sharpened. "Your confidence is new, " he said. I corrected him quietly "It is not new. It is learned." I learned it that way.The meeting ended. But The weight in my chest did not go away. It followed me down the hallway into the

Chapter 13I walked into the room. It fell silent. That was good. It meant they were all paying attention to me. I did not. Hesitate. I took my time walking to the head of the conference table. Every step I took was steady and controlled. I was not nervous. I was confident.I owned the room. I owned my confidence. I did not borrow it from anyone. I put my file on the table. Sat down. The executives across from me straightened up in their seats. Some of them looked at each other. They were not sure what to make of me.Ethan leaned back in his chair. He was watching me with interest. He knew I had something to say.. Today I was going to say it."Lets get started " I said. "We need to talk about the merger. There are some problems with the way it is set up." A man on the left frowned. "We already looked at the numbers " he said. "No " I said. "You looked at the surface numbers. I looked at the risks."The room was quiet. People were listening to me. They were paying attention. The man wh

Running would make me look weak.I had promised myself I wouldn't run. Never again. I slowly turned around.Victor stood a step behind me. His jacket was slightly undone. His usual perfect composure was off. Not broken, not messy, just unsettled. That made him more dangerous."Yes Mr. Vale?" I asked calmly. I used formality to create distance. I needed that distance."You don't have to keep doing that, " he said. "I think I do " I replied. There was a silence between us. It was heavy. Then he stepped closer. Not too close. Close enough that I could feel his pull. That unwanted awareness of him. "I want to talk, " he said. My eyebrows lifted slightly. "We just did." "No " he said quietly. "We didn't."His tone shifted. It was less controlled. More personal. More dangerous.I held his gaze. "What do you want, Victor?"

  • The Wife He Replaced    A Lie the World Believes

Chapter 11: Rita’s POVI should have known better than to think things would be easy. Nothing with Victor Vale is ever simple. The conference room felt too cold and polished like him.I sat across the glass table trying to look calm and composed with my fingers resting lightly on the documents in front of me. Inside I was tense. Because Victor was here. Of course he was.He was sitting at the head of the table looking commanding and untouchable watching everything and everyone including me.“Let’s get started, " Victor said smoothly, his voice cutting through the murmur in the room. The meeting began like any other with numbers and projections and contracts. Ethan spoke beside me, confident and sharp, walking everyone through the proposal.I focused on the numbers trying not to think about him. I could feel his presence pressing against my awareness. I could feel his gaze on me every now and then.Stay focused, I told myself. Stay unaffected.“…and this merger will make both companie

  • The Wife He Replaced    The Unidentified Woman

Chapter 10: Rita's povI was not going to turn around. Not for Kate. Not for the person I used to be. I used to be the kind of person who would fall apart under pressure.. That is not me anymore. As I walked down the hallway at the Vale Group my heels clicked on the marble floor. I made sure every step was deliberate. I was in control. I told myself to stay calm. My heart was still racing from what had happened.. I was not going to let it show.I got to the elevator. Pressed the button. I looked at my reflection in the mirror. I saw a calm and composed person. That is what I wanted to be. I wanted to be someone who was not affected by anything. The elevator door opened. I got in. Just as they were about to close a hand stopped them. I gasped. The doors opened again. He got in. Victor. The air in the elevator changed. It felt heavy and charged. I stood still. Did not say anything. I did not want to feel anything.Victor stood next to me. He was calm and familiar.. I did not want to fe
