Chapter 5

作者: Anna Smith
The police arrived at the hospital twenty minutes later.

Ethan still had not recovered from learning Dante’s identity.

“This is impossible.”

He stared at me as if he could force the truth to change by finding some trace of a lie on my face.

“How could you possibly be married to Dante Moretti?”

I did not answer.

Three years ago, Ethan had believed I could not survive without the Carter family.

Now that he had discovered I was living better than I ever had with him, he still refused to believe it.

During the investigation, Vanessa tried to place all the blame on Ethan. She told the police that Ethan was the one who had decided Leo was his son and that bringing the boy to the Carter estate had been his idea.“I only played with Leo for a little while. I didn’t know his allergy was that severe.”But the recording from Leo’s smartwatch proved that she had heard my warning.Security footage from the estate also showed Leo refusing to go near the cat from the beginning. Vanessa had forced the animal into his arms. Even when he cried for me, she refused to let the staff take him away.Faced with the evidence, she changed her story.“Ethan told me to do it. He said a boy shouldn’t be raised to be so delicate.”When Ethan learned what she had told the police, he remained silent for a long time. For three years, no matter what trouble Vanessa caused, he had always protected her. When she damaged my car, he said she had only recently learned to drive. When she took my necklace, he said sh

Mrs. Carter stared at me, every trace of arrogance gone from her face.“This has to be a misunderstanding.”She forced a smile and turned to Dante.“Ethan missed Clara so much that he mistook Leo for his own son. He never intended to harm the Moretti heir.”Dante did not acknowledge her explanation.“Apologize to my wife.”Mrs. Carter’s expression stiffened.Three years ago, she had forbidden me from attending any Carter family gathering. At Christmas dinner, she would rather leave the seat beside Ethan empty than allow me to sit there.Back then, she had told me:“Allowing you to marry Ethan was already the greatest concession the Carter family was willing to make. Don’t expect respect you were never entitled to.”Now she had no choice but to lower her head.“Clara, I misunderstood you earlier.”“Only earlier?”Her lips moved.“I was wrong about the way I treated you before.”“You don’t believe you were wrong.”I looked directly at her.“You’ve simply realized that I’m no longer someo

I only brought him home for his grandmother’s birthday. This was not a kidnapping.”“He is not Leo’s father.”I handed my phone to the officer.Ethan’s message was still on the screen.【Leo is spending time with his family. I’ll bring him back once he’s settled in.】After reading it, the officer asked for Leo’s date of birth and guardia

Ethan’s hand froze in midair, the pen suspended above the form.“Who are you?”Dante did not answer. He took the medical consent form from Ethan, signed his name on the line marked Father, and handed it to the doctor. After verifying his identity, the doctor immediately returned to the emergency room.Ethan finally reacted. He stepped forward and grabbed Dante’s shoulder.“Who gave you the right to pretend you’re the boy’s father?”Dante turned and locked one hand around Ethan’s wrist.Ethan’s expression changed instantly.“Let go!”“Is this the hand you used to hold my wife back while our son was struggling to breathe?”Dante’s voice was calm, but the fury in his eyes was terrifying.Ethan tried to pull free, but Dante’s grip did not move. His face darkened with humiliation.Dante released him and drew me to his side.“Are you hurt?”I shook my head, but my tears would not stop falling.“Leo is still in there.”“I know.”He wiped away my tears and pulled me into his arms.“I’m here no

Three days later, on Mrs. Carter’s birthday, I did not go to the estate. I did not make the cake Ethan had demanded either. That afternoon, Ethan called me.“Leo is spending time with his family. I’ll bring him back once he’s settled in.”Family? What gave him the right to call the people who had hurt me Leo’s family? When I arrived at the Carter estate, the birthday dinner had not yet begun. The staff were still preparing the garden.I shoved past the people trying to stop me and stormed into the house.“Ethan! Give me back my son!”No one answered. Then I heard Leo screaming from the backyard.“Mommy! I want Mommy!”My heart clenched. I immediately ran toward his cries.Vanessa was holding Leo, with two cats beside her.His face was red from crying. He kept pushing away the black cat in her arms, and an angry rash had already spread across his exposed skin.“Leo is severely allergic to cats! Tell Vanessa to get that animal away from him!”Ethan blocked my path and refused to let me p

When we divorced, Ethan gave me half of our marital assets. In his mind, the money was enough to keep me comfortable for three years—and enough to keep me exactly where he had left me, waiting for him.I handed a customer the coffee I had just made.“This is my shop. I work here because I enjoy it.”Ethan did not get angry. He still believed I was only acting cold to punish him.Vanessa greeted me with a false smile.“Clara, it’s been three years. How have you been?”“Good.”My calm response caught her off guard.Just then, Ethan’s phone rang. He checked the screen and stepped outside to take the call.Once Vanessa was sure he could not hear us, the smile disappeared from her face.“Stop playing hard to get. Even if Ethan remarries you, you still haven’t won.”I said nothing.Vanessa mistook my silence for pain, and the satisfaction in her eyes deepened.“Mrs. Carter has never accepted you. In her eyes, I have always been the perfect woman for her son.”“Ethan only came back because he
