Evelyn's POV

I stared at Sebastian for a moment without moving.

The rain was coming down hard on the empty road at night. The black Rolls-Royce parked beside me looked weird.

Sebastian Sinclair sat inside calm as always.

His black suit looked perfect. He was sitting up straight. His sharp eyes were fixed on me in a way that I did not understand.

"Get in," he said again, his voice steady.

I slowly shook my head.

"No need I can go home by myself."

Sebastian looked at my body for a second.

My black dress was stuck to my skin because of the rain and my hands were shaking a little because of the cold.

"You will get sick."

"I am fine."

"You are lying."

He answered quickly and calmly. That shut me up.

I bit my lip softly.

It was crazy how this man could see through me more easily than my own husband ever could.

The driver got out with an umbrella. Came up to me politely.

"Miss Evelyn, please get in. Mr. Sebastian does not like repeating himself."

I almost said no again.

The cold wind was making my head feel heavier every second.

I was too tired to keep pretending I was okay.

In the end I got into the car.

The moment the door closed I felt warm around me.

The inside of the Rolls-Royce was quiet and nice, completely different from the storm outside.

I could smell Sebastian's scent a little.

It was cold and clean and comforting in a scary way.

I sat as far away from him as I could.

"Should we go back to the Sinclair mansion?" the driver asked carefully.

"No."

The answer came out fast.

I did not want to go there.

Not tonight, maybe not ever again.

Sebastian looked at me for a second.

"Where?"

I opened my mouth but no words came out.

That simple question made my chest feel empty and hurt.

Where was I supposed to go?

My old apartment was sold after I married Damien.

The Sinclair mansion did not feel like home anymore.

"I," my voice sounded weak. "I do not know yet."

Sebastian's face changed a little.

His eyes looked darker.

Then he calmly talked to the driver.

"Take us to the Riverside Residence."

I immediately turned toward him.

"You do not have to trouble yourself—"

"You have a fever."

I was confused.

"What?"

Sebastian sighed softly, sounding impatient.

Then he suddenly put his hand on my forehead.

I froze.

His hand felt cold on my skin.

"You are burning up."

I leaned back a little without thinking.

"Sorry."

Sebastian slowly took his hand away.

The air inside the car felt weird. Too close.

My heart was beating unevenly.

Maybe because no man had touched me in a very long time.

I quickly turned my face toward the window.

The city lights outside looked blurry now. My head felt heavier. My body was shaking without control.

The last thing I remembered before everything went black was Sebastian's voice calling my name.

When I opened my eyes again the first thing I noticed was the smell of medicine.

I blinked slowly a few times before I realized I was lying in a hospital room.

My head hurt a lot. My throat felt dry.

I tried to sit up but a familiar voice stopped me right away.

"Do not move yet."

My body froze.

Damien was sitting beside my bed. He looked tired.

His shirt was wrinkled and his tie was loose. There were dark circles under his eyes.

For a second I could only stare at him silently.

A painful feeling of familiarity tightened inside my chest.

Because this used to happen a lot

Whenever I got sick during our year of marriage Damien would stay beside me all night without sleeping.

Then I thought no woman in the world could be loved more than I was.

"I am in the hospital?" I asked weakly.

"You fainted because of a fever," Damien answered quietly while standing up to help me sit properly. "The doctor said you were exhausted."

I immediately tensed up when his hand touched me.

Damien acted like he did not notice.

He poured water into a glass before handing it to me.

"Drink."

I hesitated for a moment before taking it.

Damien watched me silently for a moment.

"I was looking for you tonight."

I looked down at the water in my hand.

"Really?"

The room was quiet.

"I went back to the mansion," Damien continued softly. "They said you were left alone."

His jaw tightened a little.

"Why did you not call me?"

A bitter laugh almost came out of my mouth. This man was really something. He cheated on me.

Left me alone at the party. Now he was asking why I did not call him?

"Because I did not want to see you."

Damiens face hardened briefly.

He still stayed beside my bed.

"I know you hate me now."

I looked at him coldly.

"Then stop pretending you care."

"I do care," he answered.

My chest hurt a lot.

The saddest part was realizing my heart still felt something for him.

All this was the man I once loved more than anything.

The man who used to stay awake all night just to take care of me whenever I got sick.

Seeing him sitting beside my hospital bed like this made my resolve weaken for one moment.

No matter how badly he hurt me my heart still reacted to him.

Because loving Damien for three years was not something I could just stop doing in one night.

Damien slowly reached out. Brushed several strands of hair away from my face gently.

I wanted to avoid his touch.. My body felt too weak.

"I will fix everything," he whispered quietly.

My chest hurt badly when I heard those words.

At that moment the person I hated most was not Damien. It was myself.

Because after being hurt like this I still loved him and that made me feel pathetic.

An hour later Damien left the room to talk to the doctor.

Once my dizziness eased a little I slowly stepped out of the hospital room.

The hallway was quiet at night.

I wrapped the cardigan tighter around my body while walking slowly.

The moment I passed one of the corridors I stopped completely.

At the end of the hallway Damien stood in front of the OB-GYN department.

My body instantly felt cold.

A woman walked out of the examination room while holding ultrasound results in her hand. She wore a hat and mask.

I recognized her right away.

The woman from the hotel. Damien's mistress.

What really broke me was the way Damien carefully held her waist.

Protectively. Gently.

As if he was scared something might happen to the baby inside her.

My eyes slowly looked down at the ultrasound photos in her trembling hand.

My breathing became uneven.

Then I heard the doctor's voice from behind them.

"Congratulations, Mr. Sinclair. The baby is very healthy."

Evelyn's POV That night, the private terminal was quite dark. Except for a couple of lights around the abandoned hangar, the place looked absolutely deserted.Sebastian and the police were already on the spot, hidden somewhere around the perimeter of the building and waiting for the right moment to take action. As soon as I got out of the vehicle, I directed my gaze towards the hangar. My heartbeats were accelerated that time, but I made an effort to control myself.Marcus whispered into my earpiece. "We're in position."I touched the earpiece. "Any movement?""Nothing so far."I took a breath. "Stay there until I give the signal.""Understood."I approached the entrance to the hangar alone. The large metal doors opened as soon as I approached them.I stopped. Someone had expected my arrival.I went inside the hangar. It seemed absolutely empty. There was only one table in the center of the hangar, and several folders lay neatly o

Sebastian's POV The laboratory was empty when everyone else left. Evelyn and I were standing in front of the computer, reading the last pages of her father's journal."We have to find out what he meant by the destruction formula," Evelyn said. I was looking at the formulas displayed on the screen."Do you think he created something which can destroy Genesis?" "Not just Genesis." She pointed at one of the structures. "Everything related to it."I frowned. "Even your research?" She nodded slowly. She opened one more file from her father's journal. "He created a compound which will destroy everything connected with the Genesis structure.""What is going to happen after it is activated?""The formula collapses." "And the research?""It becomes unusable."I looked at the screen. "Everything?""Everything." Evelyn looked down. "Every formula, every modification, every research connected with Genesis could become unusable."I knew the

Evelyn's POV The threat stayed in my head for days after the breach was neutralized. Trying to go back to my work, every glance at the formula reminded me of the warning – they were watching us.Sebastian stayed in the lab with me. Not saying a word since those threatening messages appeared, he obviously tried to figure out who betrayed our security system.Suddenly, my phone started vibrating. Looking at the screen of my device, I saw no number, only the video file. I hesitated to watch it.The video showed Sebastian walking through the parking garage. My heart stopped. The video was made from some distance. Some people have been following Sebastian without his knowledge.I watched it till the end. There was the message below.[You know what will happen next.]One more message followed.[Give us the Genesis formula, or Sebastian will die.]My hands got cold. Sebastian's POV The laboratory doors shut automatically, as the alarm went on. I looked at the security guards outside of the server room when Marcus started running to the control panel."How did they manage to get in?" I asked, looking at the logs which Marcus was scanning with worried eyes."Somebody used Level One security clearance."I narrowed my eyes. "Level One?" Marcus nodded."It is available to just a few people." I looked around the room, knowing that Marcus was one of those people."Show me the log of access."Marcus showed me the screen of the security log. There was only one name on it.[Marcus Reed.]The room fell silent as Marcus stared at the screen. "This is impossible."I looked at him. "You explain it to me.""I didn't enter the server." He looked at the screen again."The computer shows me differently.""Somebody used your clearance."I approached the screen of the monitor. "And who else knows about your

Evelyn's POV Three days after the assault on Daniel, I returned to the laboratory. The danger was still around me, but by avoiding the laboratory, I would just give Victor another point to prove his success.I realized it immediately upon entering the research center. There were several officers next to the entrance, and two more stayed outside the laboratory.Sebastian was waiting for me next to my office. "You should not be here alone.""I am not alone. You have half of your security team following me.""I mean it, Evelyn."He stared at me for a second and finally moved aside. "At least let them escort you between floors.""I will think about it." Judging by the look he gave me, Sebastian did not like my reply, but I could not help smiling and went towards the laboratory. The rest of the morning went silently. Sebastian stayed close to me while I went through the files of Project Genesis, and in the end he came to the table for the research."W

Damien's POVI had been investigating Victor's partner throughout the whole night. The more information I had uncovered, the more I became sure that the person controlling Victor was more dangerous than I thought him to be.Victor had never acted without any particular motive. He had never let his true allies show up on the scene in the shadows around him. This was the very reason why I knew I had to look beyond Victor himself. In order to find out who was really controlling him, I had to analyze the finances and the people standing behind him.I sat in my armchair and looked at the pile of documents on my table. They were financial statements, company archives, transaction logs, and contracts signed in the past. Most of the names on them were meaningless at first glance. However, after analyzing several transactions with the help of several shell companies, I eventually discovered one name that immediately caught my attention.Adrian Vaughn. My gaze beca
