LOGINEvelyn's POV
I stared at Sebastian for a moment without moving. The rain was coming down hard on the empty road at night. The black Rolls-Royce parked beside me looked weird. Sebastian Sinclair sat inside calm as always. His black suit looked perfect. He was sitting up straight. His sharp eyes were fixed on me in a way that I did not understand. "Get in," he said again, his voice steady. I slowly shook my head. "No need I can go home by myself." Sebastian looked at my body for a second. My black dress was stuck to my skin because of the rain and my hands were shaking a little because of the cold. "You will get sick." "I am fine." "You are lying." He answered quickly and calmly. That shut me up. I bit my lip softly. It was crazy how this man could see through me more easily than my own husband ever could. The driver got out with an umbrella. Came up to me politely. "Miss Evelyn, please get in. Mr. Sebastian does not like repeating himself." I almost said no again. The cold wind was making my head feel heavier every second. I was too tired to keep pretending I was okay. In the end I got into the car. The moment the door closed I felt warm around me. The inside of the Rolls-Royce was quiet and nice, completely different from the storm outside. I could smell Sebastian's scent a little. It was cold and clean and comforting in a scary way. I sat as far away from him as I could. "Should we go back to the Sinclair mansion?" the driver asked carefully. "No." The answer came out fast. I did not want to go there. Not tonight, maybe not ever again. Sebastian looked at me for a second. "Where?" I opened my mouth but no words came out. That simple question made my chest feel empty and hurt. Where was I supposed to go? My old apartment was sold after I married Damien. The Sinclair mansion did not feel like home anymore. "I," my voice sounded weak. "I do not know yet." Sebastian's face changed a little. His eyes looked darker. Then he calmly talked to the driver. "Take us to the Riverside Residence." I immediately turned toward him. "You do not have to trouble yourself—" "You have a fever." I was confused. "What?" Sebastian sighed softly, sounding impatient. Then he suddenly put his hand on my forehead. I froze. His hand felt cold on my skin. "You are burning up." I leaned back a little without thinking. "Sorry." Sebastian slowly took his hand away. The air inside the car felt weird. Too close. My heart was beating unevenly. Maybe because no man had touched me in a very long time. I quickly turned my face toward the window. The city lights outside looked blurry now. My head felt heavier. My body was shaking without control. The last thing I remembered before everything went black was Sebastian's voice calling my name. When I opened my eyes again the first thing I noticed was the smell of medicine. I blinked slowly a few times before I realized I was lying in a hospital room. My head hurt a lot. My throat felt dry. I tried to sit up but a familiar voice stopped me right away. "Do not move yet." My body froze. Damien was sitting beside my bed. He looked tired. His shirt was wrinkled and his tie was loose. There were dark circles under his eyes. For a second I could only stare at him silently. A painful feeling of familiarity tightened inside my chest. Because this used to happen a lot Whenever I got sick during our year of marriage Damien would stay beside me all night without sleeping. Then I thought no woman in the world could be loved more than I was. "I am in the hospital?" I asked weakly. "You fainted because of a fever," Damien answered quietly while standing up to help me sit properly. "The doctor said you were exhausted." I immediately tensed up when his hand touched me. Damien acted like he did not notice. He poured water into a glass before handing it to me. "Drink." I hesitated for a moment before taking it. Damien watched me silently for a moment. "I was looking for you tonight." I looked down at the water in my hand. "Really?" The room was quiet. "I went back to the mansion," Damien continued softly. "They said you were left alone." His jaw tightened a little. "Why did you not call me?" A bitter laugh almost came out of my mouth. This man was really something. He cheated on me. Left me alone at the party. Now he was asking why I did not call him? "Because I did not want to see you." Damiens face hardened briefly. He still stayed beside my bed. "I know you hate me now." I looked at him coldly. "Then stop pretending you care." "I do care," he answered. My chest hurt a lot. The saddest part was realizing my heart still felt something for him. All this was the man I once loved more than anything. The man who used to stay awake all night just to take care of me whenever I got sick. Seeing him sitting beside my hospital bed like this made my resolve weaken for one moment. No matter how badly he hurt me my heart still reacted to him. Because loving Damien for three years was not something I could just stop doing in one night. Damien slowly reached out. Brushed several strands of hair away from my face gently. I wanted to avoid his touch.. My body felt too weak. "I will fix everything," he whispered quietly. My chest hurt badly when I heard those words. At that moment the person I hated most was not Damien. It was myself. Because after being hurt like this I still loved him and that made me feel pathetic. An hour later Damien left the room to talk to the doctor. Once my dizziness eased a little I slowly stepped out of the hospital room. The hallway was quiet at night. I wrapped the cardigan tighter around my body while walking slowly. The moment I passed one of the corridors I stopped completely. At the end of the hallway Damien stood in front of the OB-GYN department. My body instantly felt cold. A woman walked out of the examination room while holding ultrasound results in her hand. She wore a hat and mask. I recognized her right away. The woman from the hotel. Damien's mistress. What really broke me was the way Damien carefully held her waist. Protectively. Gently. As if he was scared something might happen to the baby inside her. My eyes slowly looked down at the ultrasound photos in her trembling hand. My breathing became uneven. Then I heard the doctor's voice from behind them. "Congratulations, Mr. Sinclair. The baby is very healthy."Evelyn's POV I agreed to meet Damien for one reason. It had nothing to do with him.It was because of my father. Nothing else mattered. The hospital lobby was very quiet that afternoon. Doctors and nurses moved through the corridors. Families waited anxiously outside the transplant center.I found Damien standing near the windows. He turned when he saw me approaching.A faint smile crossed his face. It disappeared when he realized I wasn't smiling back."You came." "I came for my father." His expression stiffened. Then he nodded toward a private consultation room."We should talk inside." I followed him. The door closed behind us. The hallway noises were left outside.Neither of us spoke away. The silence between us felt heavy.Damien finally broke it. "Your father has an opportunity." I folded my arms. "Get to the point." He took a breath. Then he placed d
Evelyn's POV The split had changed all. My future was mine only. There were no hopes waiting for me at home. There was no one to choose what I should be?A week after I got back from the work trip, I went into Sebastian's room. It was calm inside, and the sun shone through the tall windows. He looked away from the papers on his desk, "You made a choice.""I did."He shut the book in front of him. His focus was all on me now."I'd like to accept your offer."A light grin showed on his face it was tiny but real"I'm glad."He pushed a file over the table. Inside was an official job deal.I looked at every page with care. The more I looked, the more shocked I got. There were no strange rules. There were no secret parts that held back my power.I glanced at Sebastian. "This gives me full power over a lab.""It does."I frowned slightly. "Including recruitm
Evelyn's POV The first thing I noticed after I left my room was how quiet it was. It didn't last long. The moment I stepped into the hallway several people looked at me before looking away. Their reactions felt weird.Almost uncomfortable. I frowned a bit. I kept walking toward the elevator. My phone vibrated in my hand. The screen was filled with lots of notifications.News articles, messages and social media tags showed up one after another. I was curious so I opened the headline."Business. Secret Lovers? Evelyn Sinclair and Sebastian Cross Caught in a Hotel Moment."I stared at the screen. Then I opened the pictures. The images showed Sebastian carrying me through the hotel parking garage after the attack. From the angle they were taken it looked like we were hugging. The headlines did the rest. I closed the article.A slow breath came out of my mouth. People weren't interested in the tr
Damien's POVI hadn't slept. The moment I closed my eyes I saw Evelyn lying unconscious in that hotel room. All the memories from the two days replayed in my mind until my phone vibrated against the desk.At first I ignored it. It kept ringing until I finally picked it up. The screen was flooded with messages most from reporters and the rest from business associates. The headline attached to every message was the same."Sinclair CEOs Wife Seen in Moment with Sebastian Cross."My stomach tightened. I opened the article without thinking. The first photograph filled the screen. Sebastian was carrying Evelyn through the hotel parking garage. It looked intimate. Personal. Not like a rescue. I swiped to the picture then another. Every angle had been carefully chosen to tell a story that wasn't true. The comments below were even worse. “They've been having an affair.” “Poor Damien Sinclair.”
Evelyn's POVI woke up to the sound of voices outside my hotel room. The medicine had helped with the pain. My body still felt really heavy.Every part of me hurt as I remembered what happened yesterday. The bathroom, the shot, the fight and Sebastian.I closed my eyes for a second before opening them. The room was quiet now.Sebastian was sitting by the window reading some papers with the calm face he always has. When he saw I was awake he put the papers down. Came over to me."How are you feeling?" "Better." It was not entirely true. It was close enough."The doctor said the bad effects of the drug are going away." Sebastian told me.I nodded slowly. "Thank you." "You do not need to thank me." Before we could say anything I heard loud voices in the hallway. One voice was louder than the others."Move." I froze because I knew that voice away.A late
Sebastian's POV The doctor stayed beside Evelyn's bed after finishing another check-up. He looked calm. His eyes still showed concern."The medicine will stay in her system for more hours," he said quietly. "She might wake up. Fall asleep again and the fever is normal."I looked at Evelyn. Her face was red now."Will she be okay?" I asked."I think so." The doctor adjusted the IV before continuing. "We need to watch her closely tonight.""I'll stay."The doctor looked at me for a moment. He seemed happy with my answer before packing up his things."If her breathing changes or she doesn't respond for a long time, call me right away.""I will."After he left the room was quiet again. The heart monitor and the soft rain outside were the sounds.I pulled a chair closer to the bed. That was where I wanted to be.An hour passed without anything changing. Then Evelyn moved under t

Evelyn’s POV I stared at the small candle in the center of the table with a faint smile that was slowly becoming exhausting.
