CHAPTER ONE
THE ANNIVERSARY LIE The first thing Sophia Laurent noticed was that her husband had forgotten their anniversary. The second was that he had remembered to celebrate it with the man who had destroyed her father's company. She stood outside Victor's private study, a small velvet box pressed between her fingers, listening to the low murmur of voices through the half-open door. The diamond cufflinks inside the box had taken her three months to choose. Victor already owned everything money could buy, but she had wanted to give him something that meant something. Something chosen by the woman who loved him. Then she heard her father's name. "Two years, Victor," Richard Hale said. "You have been married to that woman for two years. Surely you can stop pretending this was ever about love." Sophia's smile faded. Victor answered without hesitation. "I never pretended it was about love." For a moment, she could not breathe. "The marriage gave you access to Laurent Industries," Richard continued. "Daniel trusted you because Sophia trusted you. You used that trust to weaken him from the inside. I have to admit, it was an elegant strategy." Sophia waited for Victor to deny it. She waited for the sharp, cold laugh he used whenever someone underestimated the people he cared about. She waited for him to tell Richard that he had no right to speak about his wife that way. Instead, Victor said, "I married Sophia because her father took everything from my family. I wanted him to understand what it felt like to lose the one thing he believed was untouchable." The velvet box slipped in her damp palm. "And Sophia?" Richard asked. There was a brief silence. "She was never supposed to become part of the equation." Sophia pressed her hand against the wall. Never supposed to become part of the equation. She remembered Victor kneeling in front of her in their garden, asking her to marry him. She remembered the quiet wedding he had insisted on because he said he wanted their vows to belong to them alone. She remembered the night she had cried in his arms after a difficult conversation with her father, and Victor had kissed her forehead and promised that she would never have to face anything alone. Had he rehearsed those words, too? "Do you regret it?" Richard asked. Sophia heard the faint clink of a glass being set down. "I regret that I let it continue for so long." Her heart stopped. "Because you love her?" Another silence followed, longer this time. "Because she deserved better than what I did to her." It was the closest thing to an admission she would ever receive, and somehow it hurt more than a denial would have. Sophia stepped away from the door before either man could discover her. She walked down the corridor with the gift still clutched in her hand, each step taking her farther from the life she had believed was hers. When she reached the bedroom, she placed the velvet box on Victor's side of the bed. Then she opened the safe, removed her passport and the documents she had kept there, and began packing. She did not cry. Not when she took off her wedding ring. Not when she remembered every promise he had made. Not even when she found the photograph from their wedding day, his arm wrapped around her waist and his mouth resting against her temple. She left the photograph on the dresser. The ring went beside it. At midnight, Victor entered their bedroom, loosening his tie as he glanced around the room. "Sophia?" No answer. He noticed the open wardrobe first. Then the missing suitcase. Then the ring beside the photograph. His expression changed. He crossed the room and picked up the small velvet box. Inside lay the cufflinks she had chosen for him, accompanied by a folded note. There were only eight words. I hope destroying my family was worth losing me. For the first time in two years, Victor Hale had absolutely nothing to say. And for the first time since he married her, Sophia Laurent was beyond his reach.CHAPTER FOURSophia read Marcus Reed’s message three times before replying.Sophia, this is Marcus Reed. I work with Victor. There is something you should know about the transactions between Hale Global and Laurent Industries. Victor has not told you everything, and I believe you deserve the truth. His second message was even more disturbing. Please don't confront him until you've seen the records. Some of what happened was planned long before your wedding.Long before their wedding.Sophia had spent the previous night questioning everything she thought she knew about her marriage, but she had still believed Victor’s revenge had grown out of his anger toward her father. Now she wondered whether their relationship had been part of his plan from the beginning. She forwarded the messages to Margaret Ellis, her lawyer, and waited for her call. When Margaret finally answered, her voice was firm. “We need to be careful, Sophia. If Marcus has information about the companies, he must share it
CHAPTER THREEBy eight the following morning, Sophia had learned that a broken heart could hurt without making a sound. She sat at Isabelle's kitchen table with a cup of untouched coffee between her hands, staring at the separation documents her lawyer had emailed earlier. She had barely slept. Every time she closed her eyes, she heard Victor's voice through the study door, calm and unapologetic as he explained why he had married her.I married Sophia because her father took everything from my family. Those words had followed her through the night, stripping meaning from memories she had once treasured. She remembered the first time Victor had taken her hand, the quiet dinners when he asked about her dreams, and the evening he had surprised her with a trip because she had mentioned wanting to see the coast. She had believed those moments were proof that he understood her.Now she wondered how many of them had been carefully planned. Her phone vibrated on the table.Victor's name appea
CHAPTER TWO I hope destroying my family was worth losing me. Victor read the sentence once. Then again. His fingers tightened around the paper. "What have you done, Sophia?" he muttered. The question sounded absurd even to him. He knew exactly what he had done. He had spent two years convincing himself that he could punish Daniel Laurent without allowing his revenge to touch the woman he had married. He had believed he could control every consequence, keep his business dealings separate from his feelings, and eventually put the past behind him. He had been wrong. Victor pulled out his phone and called Sophia. The call rang until it disconnected. He called again. This time, it went straight to voicemail. "Pick up the phone," he said when the recording began. He stopped himself before leaving a message and ended the call. Anger rose first, sharp and familiar. Sophia had no right to disappear without telling him where she was going. Whatever she had heard, whatever she belie
