The rain had not stopped by the time Elena arrived home.

Water clung to the sleeves of her coat as she stepped out of the elevator and walked toward the penthouse door. For a moment she stood there quietly, staring at the familiar entrance.

Three years.

Three years of returning to this place.

Three years of believing that one day it would feel less like a beautifully furnished apartment and more like a home.

She unlocked the door and stepped inside.

Silence greeted her.

The city lights spilled through the floor-to-ceiling windows, casting reflections across polished floors and expensive furniture that looked as untouched as a showroom display.

Everything was exactly where it belonged.

Everything except her marriage.

Elena placed the packaged dinner on the kitchen counter before removing her shoes.

The anniversary cake remained untouched inside its box.

For some reason, she could not bring herself to look at it.

Her phone vibrated.

Adrian.

She stared at the screen for several seconds before answering.

“I am almost home,” he said.

“Alright.”

A pause followed.

“Elena, about tonight”

“We will talk when you get here.”

Another silence.

Then he answered quietly.

“Alright.”

The call ended.

Elena walked toward the bedroom.

She changed into more comfortable clothes, washed the makeup from her face, and tied her hair back loosely.

When she looked into the mirror, she barely recognized the woman staring back at her.

Not because she looked different.

Because she looked tired.

Not physically.

Something deeper than that.

The exhaustion of hoping for the same thing for too long.

The exhaustion of making excuses for someone else’s absence.

The exhaustion of waiting.

Half an hour later, she heard the sound of the front door opening.

Footsteps entered the apartment.

Then Adrian’s voice.

“Elena?”

She stepped into the living room.

Adrian Whitmore stood near the entrance, still wearing the dark suit he had left in that morning.

His tie was loosened.

His expression looked exhausted.

For a brief moment, relief crossed his face when he saw her.

“You are still awake.”

Elena looked at him quietly.

“It would be strange if I went to sleep before my anniversary dinner ended.”

The words landed harder than she intended.

Adrian looked away first.

“I know I should have been there.”

She said nothing.

He placed his keys on the table.

“Sophia had nobody with her.”

“I know.”

“You know how hospitals are after discharge paperwork and medication instructions.”

“I know.”

He frowned slightly.

“You are making this difficult.”

For the first time that evening, Elena almost laughed.

“I am making this difficult?”

He sighed.

“That came out wrong.”

“Did it?”

Adrian ran a hand through his hair.

“I am trying to explain what happened.”

“And I already said I understood.”

“Then why does it feel like you do not?”

Because understanding and accepting were not the same thing.

Because she understood every missed dinner, every cancelled trip, every forgotten promise.

That was exactly the problem.

She understood too much.

“I packed your dinner,” she said instead.

His eyes moved toward the kitchen counter.

The untouched meal sat inside its white containers.

Adrian looked back at her.

“You waited the entire time?”

Elena smiled faintly.

“That was the original plan.”

The apartment fell quiet.

Finally Adrian spoke.

“I am sorry.”

She looked at him.

The words were familiar.

Too familiar.

“I know.”

He frowned.

“That is all you are going to say?”

“What else should I say?”

He did not answer.

Because perhaps there was nothing left to say.

Elena walked toward the dining table.

Her handbag rested on one of the chairs.

Inside was a white envelope.

It had been there for months.

Not because she had wanted to use it.

Because she had needed to know she could.

Her fingers brushed against the edge of the paper.

Behind her, Adrian spoke again.

“I know I have been busy recently.”

Recently.

She almost smiled.

Recently had somehow lasted three years.

“You missed our anniversary last year too.”

The words escaped before she could stop them.

Adrian blinked.

“What?”

“The dinner with your investors from Singapore.”

Recognition slowly crossed his face.

“Right.”

“You promised you would make it up to me.”

He hesitated.

“I did make it up to you.”

“No.”

Elena met his eyes.

“You promised you would.”

The difference mattered more than he realized.

Adrian looked genuinely uncomfortable now.

“I cannot change tonight.”

“No.”

Her voice remained calm.

“But tonight is not the problem.”

He frowned.

“Then what is?”

She looked at him for a long moment.

Long enough for him to stop looking confident.

Long enough for him to realize the conversation was moving somewhere he had not expected.

Finally she spoke.

“Do you know what I did yesterday?”

He looked confused.

“What?”

“Do you know what meeting I attended this morning?”

His frown deepened.

“Elena”

“Do you know the name of my assistant?”

Silence.

She nodded slowly.

“I know your coffee order.”

Another sentence.

“I know which client makes you cancel family dinners.”

Another.

“I know which shoulder starts hurting when you spend too many hours working.”

She folded her arms.

“But somewhere along the way, you stopped knowing anything about me.”

“That is not true.”

“Is it not?”

Neither of them spoke.

The city lights flickered behind them.

Finally Adrian said quietly,

“I provide for us.”

Elena closed her eyes briefly.

When she opened them again, there was sadness in them more than anger.

“I never asked you to provide for me, Adrian.”

His expression changed.

“I asked you to be my husband.”

The room became very quiet.

She opened her handbag.

Removed the envelope.

Placed it carefully on the table between them.

Adrian looked down.

His expression immediately hardened.

“What is this?”

“You can open it.”

He picked up the envelope.

Pulled out the documents.

His eyes scanned the first page.

Then stopped.

His entire body went still.

Divorce Agreement.

He looked up sharply.

“What is this supposed to mean?”

“It means exactly what it says.”

His disbelief quickly became irritation.

“You are divorcing me because I missed dinner?”

“No.”

“Then what is this?”

Elena held his gaze.

“This is what happens when somebody spends years feeling alone in a marriage.”

His jaw tightened.

“This is ridiculous.”

“Is it?”

“Couples argue, Elena.”

“This is not an argument.”

Her voice remained steady.

That frightened him more than shouting would have.

“This is me telling you that I cannot keep pretending everything is fine.”

He stared at her.

Neither of them moved.

Neither of them looked away.

Finally Adrian placed the papers back onto the table.

His expression was unreadable.

“You are serious.”

It was not a question.

Elena nodded once.

“Yes.”

For the first time since walking through the door, Adrian Whitmore looked uncertain.

Not angry.

Not frustrated.

Uncertain.

As though the ground beneath him had shifted without warning.

As though the life he assumed would always be waiting for him had suddenly moved.

His eyes dropped back to the papers.

Then back to her.

“When did we get here?”

Elena looked at him quietly.

The answer came easier than she expected.

“I think I arrived here a long time ago.”

The silence that followed stretched between them.

Heavy.

Uncomfortable.

Unavoidable.

And for the first time in three years, Adrian looked at his wife and realized he had absolutely no idea how long she had been standing there alone.

The rest of the afternoon passed in a way Adrian had rarely experienced before.Slowly.Painfully.Distractingly.He sat through meetings, approved reports, responded to questions from department heads, and reviewed contracts worth more money than most people would see in several lifetimes, yet every conversation seemed to happen somewhere far away from him, separated by a layer of thoughts he could not quite push aside. The image that refused to leave him was not the divorce papers. Not the hospital. Not even the anniversary dinner. It was Elena standing confidently at the front of that conference room while an entire room full of executives listened to her with the same attention he expected whenever he walked into a board meeting. For some reason, that realization unsettled him in a way he struggled to explain. Not because he had underestimated her intelligence.Never that.He had always known Elena was capable. What he had apparently never understood was that capability and visibi

  • The Wife He Took For Granted    Chapter 8: The Things He Never Saw

Adrian spent most of the morning staring at emails without actually reading them. The words on the screen blurred together until financial projections and acquisition reports became nothing more than meaningless blocks of text arranged inside expensive software. His attention kept drifting back to the same sentence. You forgot where I was, Adrian. He had spent the entire drive to the office trying to convince himself that there had been some misunderstanding.Perhaps she remembered the conversation incorrectly.Perhaps he had misunderstood her explanation.Perhaps exhaustion had blurred the details for both of them. The problem was that deep down, beneath the arguments he was constructing and the excuses he was preparing, there was a quieter voice asking a far more uncomfortable question. What if she was right? His office door opened just before ten.His assistant stepped inside carrying a tablet and several folders before immediately noticing Adrian’s expression.“Is this a bad time,

  • The Wife He Took For Granted    Chapter 7: The Silence After The Answer

The apartment felt different after that conversation. Not because anything inside it had changed, but because some truths, once spoken aloud, refused to return to where they had been before.Adrian remained standing in the kitchen long after Elena disappeared into the bedroom, his eyes fixed on the cup of tea cooling slowly on the counter between them. Only an hour earlier, it had been an ordinary evening. He had returned home early. She had been making tea. The city lights had reflected against the windows exactly as they did every night. Then she had asked him a single question.Would you have come home? The worst part was not that he could not answer. The worst part was that she already knew he could not answer. He lowered himself into one of the dining chairs and leaned back slowly, allowing the silence of the apartment to settle around him while memories he had not thought about in months returned one after another with uncomfortable clarity. The overseas acquisition had been one

Adrian barely slept that night. The question followed him everywhere. What had happened six months ago?More importantly, what kind of husband forgot something important enough to become part of the reason his wife wanted a divorce?By six thirty the following morning, he was already sitting in his office. His laptop was open. His calendar filled the screen.December.Six months earlier. He slowly moved through the dates one by one.Board meetings.Client dinners.International flights.Investor negotiations.Everything had been documented.Everything had been scheduled.Everything except whatever he had forgotten.A knock sounded against the office door.“Come in.”His assistant stepped inside carrying the morning reports.“Good morning, sir.”Adrian looked up.“Cancel my first meeting.”The younger man blinked.“Sir?”“You heard me.”“Is everything alright?”Adrian leaned back in his chair.“No.”The answer surprised both of them. For several seconds, neither man spoke. Then Adrian

The following morning, Adrian arrived at the office before anyone else. The city outside was still waking up as he stepped into the executive floor and walked toward his office. For years, mornings like this had always felt comforting to him.The quiet hallways. The untouched desks. The sense that he was already moving while the rest of the city was still asleep.Success had always demanded sacrifices. He had accepted that long ago.Apparently, Elena had been one of them.He pushed open his office door and stopped.A cup of coffee sat in the middle of his desk.Black.No sugar.Exactly the way he drank it whenever he had an important meeting. For a brief moment, he frowned. Then he remembered. His assistant usually arranged it before arriving for the morning briefing.Normal.Routine.Expected.Yet for some reason, his thoughts immediately drifted back to Elena. How many things had he assumed simply appeared because they always had?How many things had he accepted without ever wonderi

  • The Wife He Took For Granted    Chapter 4: Six Months Earlier

Adrian did not sleep much that night. He eventually moved to the sofa sometime after two in the morning, not because Elena had asked him to leave the bedroom, but because walking back into that room suddenly felt strangely difficult. The divorce papers remained on the dining table.Every time he closed his eyes, he saw them again.Every time he tried to convince himself that she was overreacting, he remembered the expression on her face. She had not looked angry. That was the problem.Angry people shouted.Angry people cried.Angry people wanted to be comforted.Elena had looked tired.Tired people stopped fighting.By six o’clock, Adrian gave up on sleep entirely. The apartment was quiet as he walked into the kitchen.Normally, there would already be coffee waiting. Not because he expected it.Not because he demanded it.Simply because that was what happened every morning.Today the kitchen counters were empty. The coffee machine sat untouched. The dining table remained exactly as th
