Chapter 5

Autor: Tiny Pear
A week later, a tabloid story about Elara went viral.

The article was packed with screenshots, a full grid of posts Asher had made on social media over the course of the week.

On day one, it was Asher sitting at Elara's bedside with red-rimmed eyes while Elara smiled up at him, soft and reassuring. Her expression overflowed with tenderness.

On day three, Asher's caption read, "You are my forever". The photo showed Elara's peaceful face as she slept, and below it, a shot of their fingers laced tightly together.

The last post was a video. Elara was being discharged from the hospital under Asher's attentive care. Reporters swarmed the entrance, calling out to her. "Ms. Waverly, is it true that Rhys Lockhart forced you to jump and caused you to lose the baby?"

Elara said nothing. It was Asher, standing at her side, who answered, his voice trembling as if from nerves. "It was an accident on Mr. Lockhart's part. Please don't blame him."

It sounded like he was defending Rhys, but it was confirmation all the same.

And Elara, who would normally have shut entertainment reporters down with a single icy word, simply shielded Asher and walked away, deliberately leaving all the room in the world for the story to spiral.

Rhys closed the page, but he couldn't shake the look in Elara's eyes from that video, and the sting of it wouldn't leave his chest. He had never cared what the rest of the world thought of him. He'd been used to standing alone long before any of this, right up until Elara came along.

She was the one who had pulled him out from under all of it. But the moment he started to rely on her, she told him it had all been a dream and let go, watching him sink without a trace of feeling in her eyes.

At least there was only one more week. After that, he and Elara would have nothing left between them.

But just when Rhys thought he could wait out the remaining days in peace, Asher showed up at his door with two bodyguards.

Asher had come to settle a score. "I hear you got hold of the Waverly Corp security footage and tried to use it against me.

"Too bad for you. Elara trusts me so completely that I didn't even have to explain myself. She decided on her own that it was just an accident."

He let out a mocking laugh. "Where did you find the nerve to bring that up to her? Don't you know me by now? I never let a grudge go."

He waved a hand. "Teach him a lesson."

The bodyguards moved on command. One locked Rhys's limbs in place while the other pressed down on his back, trying to force him to his knees.

Rhys fought back hard. "Let go of me! You lay a hand on me, and I'll make sure none of you ever work again!"

The bodyguards hesitated for a moment, but pushed down anyway. "Sorry, Mr. Lockhart. Ms. Waverly told us to follow Mr. Keene's orders. She said that as long as Mr. Keene is happy, we can do whatever it takes, including hurting you."

His knees slammed into the floor with an audible crack. Rhys looked up in disbelief, and the next second, Asher drove a kick straight into his stomach.

"Did you hear what they said?" Asher covered his mouth as he laughed, looking down at Rhys's shock and humiliation like it was a show put on for his entertainment.

"I will always come first in Elara's heart. You're just trash she shoved into a corner."

The second kick came, then a third, then more than he could count, and the searing pain tore through every nerve. A heavy, blunt fog dragged his vision into doubles, and Rhys's body went limp, barely clinging to consciousness.

Then Asher stopped. He held his phone out in front of Rhys's face, smiling brightly. "I uploaded a video of your little beating online. It's doing really well."

Rhys's eyes widened. On the screen, he saw himself on his knees, clothes wrinkled and torn, blood trickling from the corner of his mouth.

Asher had captured the most degrading, most humiliating version of Rhys imaginable. He'd taken his dignity, thrown it on the ground, and stomped it to nothing.

And then, just to twist the knife, Asher read the comments out loud in a lazy, casual drawl.

"Which hero did God's work here? This is so satisfying."

"Honestly, that pathetic beaten-dog look suits him. Isn't he supposed to sleep around? This is probably how he hooks women."

Rhys let out a roar, raw and guttural, like a cornered animal, and threw every ounce of strength he had into trying to break free. "Asher! You're a dead man!"

But it was useless.

Asher delivered one final kick that sent Rhys crumpling flat to the ground. He scoffed. "Rhys, I'm giving you three days to file for divorce from Elara.

"If you don't, this is just the appetizer. The real fun hasn't even started."

Elara spent a full month in the hospital. Her doctor looked at her, struggling to find the words. "Ms. Waverly, if there's a next time, there won't be anything anyone can do for you."Elara didn't care. All she did was quietly keep up with what Rhys had been doing. She learned that he'd become a talented gallery owner and had recently held an exhibition that drew attention from across the industry, earning widespread praise from critics and peers alike. She learned that his married life was happy, and that the Hartfields treated him like one of their own.She learned that the past two years had been grueling for him, full of struggle, but that Cecily had been by his side through all of it.Elara also started seeing a therapist. The therapist told her that sometimes, letting go was the best outcome for both people. Loving someone didn't mean having to possess them. She could do what she'd done with Asher, watching from a distance and protecting him quietly, and that would be enou

On the other side, Rhys got into the car.It was his wedding night, but thanks to Elara's appearance, the ceremony had hit a rough patch."I'm sorry."Rhys had barely opened his mouth when Cecily's quiet apology reached him first. She pulled the car over to the side and said it again. "I'm sorry. I should have checked the guest list more carefully."But the Hartfields were one of the most prominent families in the country, several times larger than even the Waverlys. Their guest list spanned business circles across the globe. There was no realistic way to vet every single name. The love in Cecily's eyes hadn't changed one bit, and the sight of it softened everything in Rhys. He knew that what he felt for Cecily was different from what he'd once felt for Elara.Elara had always been distant, untouchable, and he had tamped down his own personality to try to match her. There had always been something uneven about it, something that made him feel like he was looking up instead of acr

The hollow, suffocating emptiness that had been clinging to her like a curse vanished the instant her arms closed around Rhys. But it lasted only a second before he wrenched himself free and shoved her back hard."We have nothing to do with each other anymore." His voice was flat."I'd appreciate it if you showed some restraint, Ms. Waverly."Elara's breathing was fast and shallow. She wanted nothing more than to drag him away by force, but she was terrified of making him hate her even more. She couldn't accept this outcome, but she also knew she had no right to fight it. She was the one who had failed him."Rhys, I love you." Elara would have torn her own chest open and shown him her heart if it meant he'd believe her.She was a woman who could close nine-figure deals without blinking, but right now her voice was shaking. "After you left, I realized I'd stopped loving Asher a long time ago. That was also when I found out what he'd done to you, everything he put you through. I'm s

Rhys hadn't noticed Elara at all.Under the spotlight, with every eye in the room on him and Cecily, his palms were damp with sweat and his heart was racing.Cecily felt his nerves and smiled gently at him. "I love you."The crowd erupted into cheers, and Rhys felt his eyes sting with tears. It felt like a dream. This was his second wedding, and even he was surprised that he'd stepped into marriage again so soon. He'd been certain he would never trust another person for the rest of his life. But Cecily had barged into his world anyway, and with her warmth, her patience, and her kindness, she had melted through every wall he'd built and given him the courage to love again. He nodded, about to say "I do."But a sudden commotion broke out below. He looked down just in time to see a woman in a formal dress charge toward the edge of the stage and rip a microphone out of someone's hand. She turned to face him, and his gaze went hard."Rhys! It's me! Elara!" Her voice rang through the

But ever since Rhys left, Riley had learned just how devastating Elara's unraveling could be.Over the past two years, she'd gone through no fewer than 50 surgeries, major and minor. Ten of those times, she had tried to end her own life and was only stopped because someone found her in time. When Elara showed no reaction, Riley gritted his teeth. "Ms. Waverly, we've never stopped looking for Mr. Lockhart. Over the past two years, our people have searched over a hundred countries. I believe we'll find him soon. Please don't give up."Something finally shifted behind Elara's vacant eyes.He was right. She had been searching for Rhys this entire time. Her team had combed through a hundred countries, and she had lived through a hundred cycles of hope collapsing into despair."I know." She closed her eyes. The only thing still keeping her alive was the chance of finding him.She took a deep breath. "What time is it?"Riley felt a painful mix of relief and sadness at watching Elara sl

Two years had passed. The bar was loud and drenched in neon. A male escort tried to lean against Elara, tilting his head with a flirtatious smile. "Ms. Waverly, need another drink?""Get lost." The words came out cold enough to make him flinch, and he was gone in seconds.Elara's friend, Maggie Fielding, let out a long sigh. "Elara, it's been two years. You have to stop doing this to yourself."This wasn't the first time she'd brought Elara out to try to take her mind off things, but every single time, any man who got within arm's reach was driven away with one look."Elara, let yourself move on. Find someone better than Rhys. You'll get past this eventually, the same way you got over what happened with Asher.""He's different." Maggie heard Elara's voice come out raw and exhausted, barely above a murmur. "Rhys isn't the same."Maggie went quiet, watching Elara hunch over and drink like she was trying to drown, and felt her own eyes sting. He really wasn't the same. After th
