Chapter 4

Autor: Tiny Pear
Elara's eyes burned with anger. "Rhys, where did you get that video? Delete it. Now."

Rhys had never imagined this would be her reaction. But he wasn't afraid. He met her gaze head-on. "Give me one reason."

Elara's jaw tightened, her voice sharp with barely contained fury. "Asher just lost his footing and instinctively grabbed for you. It was an accident, nothing more.

"That video will only twist and distort what actually happened. Are you keeping it because you want to frame him?"

Rhys actually laughed at her accusation.

Maybe Asher was right. In Elara's mind, he really was the kind of person who'd stoop that low. She had never respected him. He was the only one stupid enough to pour out everything he had.

"Elara, when you thought I pushed him down those stairs, you told me to apologize, or you wouldn't sign the consent form for my surgery. But when he's the one who pulled me down, you call it an accident."

Rhys's lips curled into a cold smile. "How is that fair?"

Elara froze. She could feel something important slipping through her fingers. Her voice dropped. "What consent form?"

Rhys didn't answer.

Elara's frown deepened. Her gaze finally landed on Rhys's face, and the color seemed to drain from her own, though the realization came far too late.

"What happened to you? It's just a few scrapes, isn't it? You're being dramatic."

"That's none of your concern." Rhys's voice was flat, and then it turned sharp.

"Asher sent me down a flight of stairs, and he's going to pay an equal price for it. If he doesn't, I will release the video to the public."

"Rhys Lockhart!" Elara's attention snapped away instantly. Her expression turned dangerous, and the cold that came off her was enough to freeze the room.

"Do you have to be this unreasonable? Asher is a victim too. His knees and the backs of his hands are scraped raw. He's in so much pain he can't even sleep. Isn't that enough?"

Rhys's heart clenched. He'd been telling himself, over and over, to stop holding on to any hope when it came to Elara. But there was still something lodged in his chest, thick and aching, that he couldn't swallow past.

Asher had a few scrapes, and Elara was beside herself with worry. Meanwhile, Rhys was covered in injuries from head to toe, wrapped in stark white bandages, and she hadn't even glanced at them.

The favoritism was so lopsided it was almost grotesque, like an invisible hand closing around his throat and squeezing the life out of him.

"My terms are on the table." He lowered his eyes, unwilling to let her see how close he was to breaking.

"Meet them, or get out."

After a moment of silence, Elara's voice came back, cold and even. "I'll take his place."

Rhys's thoughts ground to a halt. "What did you just say? You're pregnant!"

"So?" Elara looked toward the bay window, calm as ever.

"If this child wants to be mine, it had better learn to fight for its own survival. If it can't handle that much, I wouldn't want it even after it's born.

"I jump for Asher. You delete the video."

"Fine." Where Elara couldn't see, Rhys's fingers were gripping the bedsheets so hard his knuckles had gone white.

He'd already known Elara didn't see their child as something born from love. To her, the baby was just another tool, another burden she could discard whenever it suited her.

Maybe the child was never supposed to exist at all.

Rhys's eyes stung with a dry, searing ache. He forced out every word with everything he had. "Of course. Go ahead."

Elara nodded. She glanced at the open ground below, and without a second of hesitation, she jumped. The sound of impact hit first, heavy and final, followed immediately by the screams of passersby.

Rhys's mind went blank. He made his way to the bay window, slowly, and looked down.

He saw the blood pooling out from beneath Elara's body. A fall like that should have been enough to make anyone lose consciousness from the pain alone, but Elara showed no sign of distress. She simply tilted her head up and looked straight at Rhys, her expression as calm and unreadable as ever.

Those still, unwavering eyes seemed to say one thing. "I've paid my price. Now hold up your end."

Rhys stepped back. He pulled out his phone in a daze and deleted the video.

The moment the screen went dark, tears hit without warning. He wiped at them frantically, but the more he wiped, the more they came, and a bitter wave of self-contempt swallowed him whole.

So, this was how deep Elara's love for Asher ran, so fierce and absolute that she wouldn't think twice about throwing away her own life.

Elara spent a full month in the hospital. Her doctor looked at her, struggling to find the words. "Ms. Waverly, if there's a next time, there won't be anything anyone can do for you."Elara didn't care. All she did was quietly keep up with what Rhys had been doing. She learned that he'd become a talented gallery owner and had recently held an exhibition that drew attention from across the industry, earning widespread praise from critics and peers alike. She learned that his married life was happy, and that the Hartfields treated him like one of their own.She learned that the past two years had been grueling for him, full of struggle, but that Cecily had been by his side through all of it.Elara also started seeing a therapist. The therapist told her that sometimes, letting go was the best outcome for both people. Loving someone didn't mean having to possess them. She could do what she'd done with Asher, watching from a distance and protecting him quietly, and that would be enou

On the other side, Rhys got into the car.It was his wedding night, but thanks to Elara's appearance, the ceremony had hit a rough patch."I'm sorry."Rhys had barely opened his mouth when Cecily's quiet apology reached him first. She pulled the car over to the side and said it again. "I'm sorry. I should have checked the guest list more carefully."But the Hartfields were one of the most prominent families in the country, several times larger than even the Waverlys. Their guest list spanned business circles across the globe. There was no realistic way to vet every single name. The love in Cecily's eyes hadn't changed one bit, and the sight of it softened everything in Rhys. He knew that what he felt for Cecily was different from what he'd once felt for Elara.Elara had always been distant, untouchable, and he had tamped down his own personality to try to match her. There had always been something uneven about it, something that made him feel like he was looking up instead of acr

The hollow, suffocating emptiness that had been clinging to her like a curse vanished the instant her arms closed around Rhys. But it lasted only a second before he wrenched himself free and shoved her back hard."We have nothing to do with each other anymore." His voice was flat."I'd appreciate it if you showed some restraint, Ms. Waverly."Elara's breathing was fast and shallow. She wanted nothing more than to drag him away by force, but she was terrified of making him hate her even more. She couldn't accept this outcome, but she also knew she had no right to fight it. She was the one who had failed him."Rhys, I love you." Elara would have torn her own chest open and shown him her heart if it meant he'd believe her.She was a woman who could close nine-figure deals without blinking, but right now her voice was shaking. "After you left, I realized I'd stopped loving Asher a long time ago. That was also when I found out what he'd done to you, everything he put you through. I'm s

Rhys hadn't noticed Elara at all.Under the spotlight, with every eye in the room on him and Cecily, his palms were damp with sweat and his heart was racing.Cecily felt his nerves and smiled gently at him. "I love you."The crowd erupted into cheers, and Rhys felt his eyes sting with tears. It felt like a dream. This was his second wedding, and even he was surprised that he'd stepped into marriage again so soon. He'd been certain he would never trust another person for the rest of his life. But Cecily had barged into his world anyway, and with her warmth, her patience, and her kindness, she had melted through every wall he'd built and given him the courage to love again. He nodded, about to say "I do."But a sudden commotion broke out below. He looked down just in time to see a woman in a formal dress charge toward the edge of the stage and rip a microphone out of someone's hand. She turned to face him, and his gaze went hard."Rhys! It's me! Elara!" Her voice rang through the

But ever since Rhys left, Riley had learned just how devastating Elara's unraveling could be.Over the past two years, she'd gone through no fewer than 50 surgeries, major and minor. Ten of those times, she had tried to end her own life and was only stopped because someone found her in time. When Elara showed no reaction, Riley gritted his teeth. "Ms. Waverly, we've never stopped looking for Mr. Lockhart. Over the past two years, our people have searched over a hundred countries. I believe we'll find him soon. Please don't give up."Something finally shifted behind Elara's vacant eyes.He was right. She had been searching for Rhys this entire time. Her team had combed through a hundred countries, and she had lived through a hundred cycles of hope collapsing into despair."I know." She closed her eyes. The only thing still keeping her alive was the chance of finding him.She took a deep breath. "What time is it?"Riley felt a painful mix of relief and sadness at watching Elara sl

Two years had passed. The bar was loud and drenched in neon. A male escort tried to lean against Elara, tilting his head with a flirtatious smile. "Ms. Waverly, need another drink?""Get lost." The words came out cold enough to make him flinch, and he was gone in seconds.Elara's friend, Maggie Fielding, let out a long sigh. "Elara, it's been two years. You have to stop doing this to yourself."This wasn't the first time she'd brought Elara out to try to take her mind off things, but every single time, any man who got within arm's reach was driven away with one look."Elara, let yourself move on. Find someone better than Rhys. You'll get past this eventually, the same way you got over what happened with Asher.""He's different." Maggie heard Elara's voice come out raw and exhausted, barely above a murmur. "Rhys isn't the same."Maggie went quiet, watching Elara hunch over and drink like she was trying to drown, and felt her own eyes sting. He really wasn't the same. After th
