LOGINI put the plate of food on to the table in front of Dad. His hands were full of papers, glasses set on his nose, and a frown on his face. Something that, lately, was a constant feature. Reaching out, I squeezed his shoulder.
“Dad, dinner.”
He nodded, his hand coming over and grasping mine. “Thank you. I’m sorry.”
“Don’t apologize. You’re still Alpha. I understand that. You just need to make sure you’re still taking care of yourself.”
I sat down on the other side of him. Henry was late, but he was also dealing with the same thing. For some reason, our pack members were falling ill. It was the same issue every time. We’d checked everything. The water, the air, the buildings, the food, but there was nothing.
On top of that, it wasn’t everyone. Just a select few. Which made it even more bizarre. It had been weighing on both Henry and Dad’s minds for the past few months. They were taking it personally, despite me telling them they shouldn’t. However, after the first wolf died, it was inevitable that they blamed themselves.
“Is Henry…?” I stopped as the door opened.
My brother stepped in, tapping his boots on the mat before coming in and setting them in his cubby. He looked tired, almost as tried as Dad. I stood up, but he waved me off.
“I’ll grab my plate. Don’t worry about it.”
Nodding, I sat back down and pushed around the food on my plate. Henry sat down and ate, not saying a word to Dad or I. Though, I had a feeling they were mind linking the information Dad was reading over before he started eating. I felt left out, not that I would tell them that.
When I did, it was always ‘you don’t need to worry about this’ or ‘you’ve got enough on your plate with school’. I was fifteen already and they treated me like a child sometimes. My friends were getting sick too. I wanted to help them, but they would shut me out.
After taking a few bites, I put down my fork. If they wanted to talk, then I was just getting in the way. Grabbing my plate, I stood up, but Dad reached out.
“I’m sorry, Tahlia. We weren’t ignoring you.”
“I know you weren’t. You also aren’t talking to me about anything. So I’m just in the way.”
Dad let out his signature sighs. “You’re not. I’m sorry. We will stop. Just…talk to us. How was your day at school?”
“Fine. I knocked Denia’s tooth out.” I sat back down at the table.
The both of them groaned and I chuckled.
“Why? Why can’t you just not get in a fight?”
“I mean, it was during PE. We were training. Her head got too close to my fist. She should have dodged.”
Henry chuckled. “She didn’t?”
I snorted. “More like she can’t. She adds extra inserts into her bra to make her look like she has boobs. Except that it throws her weight off. So she wasn’t able to recover fast enough.”
The two of us giggled until we glanced over at Dad. His disapproval came across in his eyes and we both shut up. I sunk in my chair.
“Tahlia, you shouldn’t have caused damage like that.”
“So I’m just supposed to not fight? They won’t allow the seniors near me because all the ones who are good enough to fight are needed for their respective sports. They stick me with people who can’t fight, then this is how it’s going to end up. Denia cared more about looking good in her gym uniform than her safety. That’s on her, not me.”
Dad frowned. “That’s enough, Tahlia. If I hear you have had another fight in school, I will pull you. You will end up doing homeschooling. Is that what you want?”
I got up again, this time slamming my hands on the table. “Maybe if you reigned in your leadership, their children wouldn’t be acting out like they were royalty.”
“Tahlia!” Henry snapped at me. “Don’t you dare.”
“Me? I’ve had to deal with this for years. Not just from those in my grade, but the ones who are older and younger! I’m tired of it. Homeschool me! It’s fine! Both Anna and Tate are sick. Gwen already left because her mom got sick! I don’t have anyone left!”
Grabbing my plate, I stormed into the kitchen. Putting it in the sink, I skipped every other step as I headed up the stairs to my room. I slammed my door behind me grabbing every stuffed animal off my bed and threw it at the door.
Finally, once my ammo was exhausted, I headed out of the window and onto the roof. It was warm still. The night in full swing, but even a sweatshirt would be too much. Looking up, I couldn’t see the stars yet, but it wouldn’t be very long before we could. The pack house was far enough away from the main center of town that at night, no lights except from the house itself, obstructed the view of the stars.
This was my favorite spot. I loved coming up here and looking at the stars. So much so that I had taken up a hobby in astronomy. Learning the names of the stars, how they moved in the sky with the rotation of our planet.
After about an hour, I groaned when I heard the window next door to mine swing open. I was surprised though to see Dad climb onto the room, not Henry. His room was next to mine and he would climb out and join me sometimes. Dad’s room was on the other side, which wasn’t an easy way to get onto the room.
He laid down next to me, not saying anything. I looked up as well, naming off the star names in my head. His sigh broke the quiet and I closed my eyes for a moment.
“I’m sorry, Dad. I didn’t mean to snap at you.”
“No, you were right. I’ve been keeping things from you. Even asking your brother to do so as well. This situation has been all-consuming and I just didn’t want you to fall into the hole as well.”
His hand reached out and took mine. After a moment, I realized it was shaking. I sat up, holding tight to his hand. He didn’t look at me, though. Dad was still looking up at the stars.
“What is going on?”
“I was contacted today by another Alpha.”
My brow furrowed. “Like from one of the neighboring packs?”
Dad shook his head. “No. A rogue, and a notorious one at that.”
“Does Henry know? Is that what you were talking about?”
Again, Dad shook his head. “He doesn’t know. I’m going to take June and Wilson tomorrow. We are going to meet with the Alpha. He has a camp that is a few miles outside of the pack.”
“Why?”
None of this made sense. Especially if he hadn’t told Henry this. It made sense he wouldn’t tell Gamma Paul or Beta Richard. It was harder to trust them, and all three of us kept running into issues with them. However, they had sort-of, worked through their differences to tackle this illness. Except that it was at an arms length.
“Because they said they are poisoning the pack. They are the ones behind it, and they want to take over.”
Letting Tahlia in first, I shut the door and turned, almost slamming my face into Dallas. He was looming in front of me with his hands on his hips. I raised my eyebrow at him.“What? I’m home before the sun went down, Dad.” I waved outside where the light was painting the sky in an orange glow.“You’re going to run yourself into the ground. Again, Ephraim. You’ve been sleeping what, three or four hours a night? You’re taking up multiple patrols and you’re trying to still do work while you’re at it!”“I am! I am trying to figure out what the hell is going on! Without having to take some random she-wolf as my Luna just to get a couple knights out here!” My voice rose, the air shifting around me.Dallas wasn’t backing down. “You need to allow me to go out more so you can come in! I’m fine taking full patrols! It’s my job as Beta…”“You’re a new father, Dallas!” I growled at him. “I am not going to take you away from your pup more than I need to! I can handle a few fucking patrols. What I
‘Alpha.’My lips pursed and I growled through the mind-link. ‘Where?’‘They were coming up from the south.’I was currently in the northeast, covering a hole in the patrols from the last break-through. These had been happening more and more. Rogues, one group after another. It was as thought they were being drawn to the center of our pack. At first it was one or two in a week. Now, it was one a day.We were running on fumes. My whole pack was on edge after three straight weeks of attacks. Everything, literally everything, was put on hold. It was all hands on deck and I did my best to fill as many holes to allow Dallas and Reese some time off. For the most part, Tahlia was by my side or covering another part of the territory. For the most part, the rogues who were just passing by didn’t mean any harm. Getting them out of the territory, they usually apologized and said they didn’t know what came over them. It was the rogues that didn’t have their humanity left that were a bigger issue. T
Doc was not kidding. I was stuck in bed for another two days before they let me walk around the pack house. Since I was still recovering, I had to stay in the guest bedroom in case something happened. Tahlia, after I finally left the bed, left my side. She refused to until I guess she deemed me strong enough. I think it also helped that when I was out of the room, I was being helicoptered by one or more of my pack members. After a half a day, she came back full and washed. I guessed she took a dip in the river and ran it off before stepping into the house. Letty had actually growled at her the last time she tried to walk in wet and Tahlia had taken it to heart ever since.I was sitting at the kitchen table, looking over some books that Dallas finally let me have from my office. Doc still hadn’t cleared me for work, but apparently, reading was okay. Sighing, I rubbed my foot against Tahlia who was lying next to my chair.‘Rogues!’The mind link was yelled at me and I looked up from my
*** Ephraim’s POV *** There was something heavy on my chest. It was hard to breathe and I reached up to push it off. My hand touched fur and a current ran through my fingers. Blinking, I narrowed my eyes at an unfamiliar ceiling. Looking down, Tahlia had most of her front on me, pinning me down. Her nose buried in the side of my neck.Smiling, I reached to rub her when I noticed the line in my arm. It was hooked up to a bag that was hanging next to my bed. My eyes narrowed as I tried to remember what happened. I had been on the phone with Alpha Fabian and then nothing. Trying to take a breath, I wanted to push Tahlia off me, but she wasn’t even budging.‘Dallas?’‘Ephraim! Fucking hell! Give me a second. I’ll be up.’I sighed at the pure relief in my Beta’s voice. Apparently, I had been laid up for a while. The door opened a few minutes later and Dallas stepped in. His face was tight and I gave him a smile. He didn’t smile back.“My Beta looks very mad.”“I am very mad, Alpha. You we
*** Tahlia’s POV *** My Alpha started to fall and I rushed under him. He collapsed on top of me and I was driven down to the floor with his weight. This morning I had felt it. I don’t know how, but I could. He was off. Something was wrong. I tried to tell him that he shouldn’t get up. Not with how little sleep he got.He hadn’t been dozing off like I was. It was hard to stay awake with nothing to do. My Alpha was always looking at something, focused, like when you were on the hunt during winter. His sleep and his body was suffering for it. Even mine was simply from trying to match him. I’d need to go out to hunt soon, but leaving him smelling like sickness wasn’t going to happen. It didn’t work. Someone important was here and so I tried to stay close as I could. The beast that showed up, they weren’t a beast. It felt completely different. They weren’t like anyone I had come across. There was something that made me want to bow my head in recognition. Not like my Alpha, but something fa
“Luna…”“I know it’s harsh to say.” He leaned forward, sighing. “Trust me. My entire life, I had Selene telling me that I wasn’t on my path. That everything that happened to me, and I mean everything, was all to bring me to my mate and his pack. Everything I went through was to make me who I am and be able to not just run a pack as Luna, but also to be able to raise the next Alpha King.”I leaned forward, my head resting on Tahlia. “I’m sorry. I didn’t think to compare my pain to yours.”Luna Riley chuckled. “Don’t. I had my pain. You had yours. It’s not something you can compare. It just always sucks to think about that it was what lead us here. Still, all part of the plan. That all of it had to happen to lead you to be where you are and who you are.”My lips pursed and sat up. He wasn’t wrong. If my parent’s hadn’t died, then I wouldn’t be here. Uncle might have asked for me, but from the stories he told, Dad would have said no. Dad loved the forest, but the pack life wasn’t somethi
We fist-bumped before heading off on our missions. Stepping over the barrier for the first time, I rolled my shoulders. I wanted to alert the wolf of my presence, but not in a way that was threatening. That didn’t really make sense, but I was careful where I walked. Sometimes I accidentally disturb
Shifting, I ran into our little make-shift camp. I’d woken up early and decided to run out the jitters. I kept to the south though, running through the town and the edge of the territory before looping back up behind the pack house. By the time I came back, the sun was up and so were my Beta and Ga
I walked back just as the sun was starting to dip down. Despite being on the edge of the territory and walking the perimeter of the barrier, the wolf never showed. Norah’s call put me on edge even more. There were things she wasn’t telling me, things I knew she couldn’t because of her coven. Which
“Ugh. Can you please get to your question? I’m done.”“Thank you.” I finally let out a sigh. “I have a barrier I’m dealing with.”Norah hummed. “Like a magical one?”“Norah, why do you think I’m calling you specifically? Of course it’s a magical barrier.”“Right. Okay. So you have a magical barrier
