Chapter 4

Author: Bowl of Rice
I instinctively reached out to snatch it back.

"I earned that working summer shifts!

"Give it back! That's the money I saved for college!"

Caleb yanked his hand up, holding the cash far out of my reach.

"You really expect me to give stolen cash back to you? Keep dreaming!"

The two of us ended up in a frantic struggle, tugging back and forth.

Right then, Grace's footsteps echoed outside the bedroom.

"Evan, we need to talk."

Before I could even answer, Caleb shoved the door wide open and threw himself backward onto the sharp ceramic shards of the piggy bank. Fresh blood trickled out, staining the floor.

He screamed in tragic agony, "Evan, don't push me!"

I stared at Caleb lying in the middle of the broken pieces, wailing, then looked over at Grace coming through the doorway.

I was completely stunned.

Grace practically sprinted over, pressing down hard on Caleb's bleeding cuts.

She turned her head to glare at me.

In that single second, I saw raw, terrifying hatred in her eyes.

My parents rushed upstairs at the sound of the commotion, not even bothering to yell at me yet. They followed Grace, swarming around Caleb as they all hurried back downstairs.

I just stood there, paralyzed.

Before I could even process what was happening, my mom's hand crashed across my face, followed by a flurry of fists and kicks from my dad.

They rained blows on me, screaming curses at the top of their lungs.

"Caleb just stepped into your room to check on you, and you turned him into a bloody mess! Is your soul pitch black?"

"You brat! Stealing money is one thing, but you're actually trying to kill people now?"

"Get out! Go back to the trailer park where you belong! Our family doesn't have a son like you!"

…

They beat me viciously.

Pain radiated through every single inch of my body, leaving me without even enough strength to stand up.

Just as my consciousness began to drift into a blur, a pair of pristine shoes stopped directly in front of my face.

Grace reached down, pulling me up by my arms.

She waved her hand dismissively at my parents, her voice sounding deceptively gentle. "Mr. and Mrs. Foster, stop hitting him. Evan probably didn't mean to do it.

"How about this? I'll take him out for a drive and talk to him. Maybe once we clear the air, things will get better."

I tilted my head up to look at her with deep gratitude, wanting to thank her for saving me.

I wanted to tell her that I really didn't push Caleb.

When I looked clearly into her eyes, though, horror chilled me to the bone. They were filled with an abyss of pure disgust.

She hated my guts.

When Grace led me out the front door, we passed through the living room.

Caleb was lying comfortably on the leather couch, being tended to by a private doctor wrapping his wounds in gauze.

He gave me a smug, triumphant smirk and waved his hand.

Then his lips moved, silently mouthing: “Goodbye forever, you worthless trash.”

The sky outside was pitch black, heavy with the threat of a massive storm.

Grace drove at a terrifying speed. I gripped my seatbelt tightly, not even finding a single split second of silence to explain what really happened.

She finally slowed down and pulled over on a deserted stretch of road. Surrounded by pitch blackness, I had no idea where we were.

Only then did Grace finally bother to speak to me.

"Evan, get out and grab something from the trunk for me."

I nodded obediently and stepped out into the dark.

Raindrops began to fall in scattered dots, hitting my bare skin with an icy chill.

I had barely reached the rear bumper when—

“Click.”

A sharp click echoed through the night as the central locks engaged.

I whirled around instantly.

Grace rolled down her driver-side window, revealing a face twisted into a sneer of absolute mockery and disgust.

"To be completely honest, when you broke off the engagement earlier, I actually felt a tiny bit sorry for you.

"I had no idea you were still such a master at playing the pathetic victim, going straight for Caleb the second you got home! Evan, your heart is truly wicked!

"That's what you get for acting out! Stay here and think about what you did!"

The very next second, the engine roared as the car shot forward into the night.

A massive clap of thunder boomed overhead, and torrential rain came crashing down in sheets.

I stood frozen in the downpour.

The realization finally hit me like a slap in the face. I finally understood what Caleb meant by "goodbye forever" right before I left.

I had been abandoned.

Over these five years, my dad aged rapidly, while my mom remained bedridden with chronic illness. As for Grace, her hair had become streaked with premature gray in the years since I vanished. The news report on the TV was still broadcasting."According to the latest reports, a young man matching the description of Evan Foster, the missing Foster heir, was spotted again today in the western district. The Fosters and Grace Rhodes have reportedly rushed to the scene..."The broadcast cut to the airport, where I saw two stooped, frail figures, along with a woman crowned in white hair. Then the camera shifted to the police station, capturing the exact moment their faces crumbled in devastating disappointment when they realized the stranger was not me.The anchor continued in a solemn, regretful tone, "Regrettably, it was not..."I pointed at the screen and turned around to look at my fiancée, Sarah Hayes."Sarah, I'm the real heir of the Fosters they're talking about on TV, right?"

Grace, who had been standing silently by the side, suddenly chimed in with a cold, piercing tone."The house has security cameras. We trusted you before, so we never checked them. Caleb, before we asked you, we already watched the footage."You'd better tell the truth."Caleb tried to play it off. "What security cameras? They're probably broken, right?"Just bring Evan out here! Let him confront me face to face! Does he even dare?"Grace suddenly raised her voice in a furious roar. "Caleb! Keep playing dumb, and don't blame me when I get rough with you!"That was when Caleb finally got genuinely terrified. He stammered out the truth, "I... I just saw a lot of cash in the piggy bank. I thought he stole it, so I wanted to turn him in. I accidentally fell onto the sharp shards of the piggy bank."My parents listened, their hands slowly clenching into fists.Grace didn't stop there, pushing further with cold persistence. "And what about last time, when you said Evan poured boili

The icy rainwater soaked through Grace’s collar, cold and biting against her skin.In moments of daze, she couldn't stop her mind from racing. She had been out here in the rain for so long, and she was freezing. Was Evan cold, too?How terrified must someone have been, dumped out here in the dark as they slowly lost their own identity? The more she thought about it, the deeper her panic grew. She widened her stride, stumbling through the dense bushes and thick underbrush."Evan! Where are you?"She desperately wanted to see me.She wanted... Wanted to apologize to my face. The storm had rolled in fast, and it cleared just as quickly. An hour later, the torrential rain tapered off to a drizzle, then stopped completely.Still, there was no trace of me.My parents finally called the police.Officers were pulling footage from every security camera in the surrounding area, trying to trace my steps.Grace called in reinforcements from her family's security team. They scoured ev

"Speaking of which, I've been meaning to ask ever since I came in to do my rounds. Mr. and Mrs. Foster, Evan was diagnosed with progressive amnesia. Technically, he was supposed to come in for a follow-up consultation a few days ago."Where is he right now?"Dr. Whitmore’s voice grew sharp with disapproval as she spoke, "That young man's condition is infinitely more serious than a few superficial scrapes! How can you as his parents be so completely oblivious?"My parents froze, utterly bewildered.Progressive amnesia? It was their first time hearing the phrase, and they couldn't comprehend what the doctor was talking about.Grace, on the other hand, went deathly pale. She lunged forward, grabbing the doctor's arm, her voice trembling in desperate panic. "Doctor, what did you just say?"What is... Progressive amnesia?"Dr. Whitmore took one look at their reactions and understood everything instantly. They had no idea. None at all.She let out a long, heavy sigh. "Progressive

Rain poured down relentlessly outside.Still sick with worry over Caleb's injuries, my parents had insisted on getting him admitted to a private hospital. My mom sat beside the bed, carefully slicing an apple for him. My dad leaned over the edge, delicately adjusting the angle of the bed to make sure he was as comfortable as humanly possible.Grace stood alone by the floor-to-ceiling window, staring out at the torrential downpour, wrapped in heavy silence.Caleb took a cheerful bite of his apple, looking over at Grace's back."Grace, you left him out by the abandoned state highway on the edge of town, right?"That place is completely isolated. It’s the middle of nowhere. Evan won't even be able to trek back without trudging through two straight hours of this storm."He let out a smug, satisfied smirk."Maybe that'll finally clear his head. Let's see if he ever dares to pick on me again."A strange prickle of unease suddenly washed over Grace. She turned around, her eyes fixin
