It happened because of a guard.

One afternoon, Lycan was helping me remove dead leaves from the roses when a guard approached.

“You're needed inside.”

Lycan stood.

“I'll come.”

The guard grabbed his arm.

Too roughly.

Lycan immediately stiffened.

“Let go.”

The guard tightened his grip.

Something inside me snapped.

“Release him.”

The guard looked at me.

“He is a prisoner.”

“I know.”

“Then stay out of it.”

I slowly lowered the rose branch in my hand.

“I said release him.”

The guard scoffed.

“You seem to have forgotten your position, Your Highness.”

My jaw tightened.

“My position?”

“You're a prisoner too.”

The words struck a nerve.

But before I could respond, the guard shoved Lycan.

He stumbled backward.

His wrist caught against one of the rose bushes.

A thorn tore through his skin.

Blood appeared instantly.

My eyes darkened.

I didn't think.

I moved.

I grabbed the guard by the collar and slammed him against the nearest stone wall.

The sound echoed through the garden.

“Touch him like that again...”

The guard's eyes widened.

I leaned closer.

“...and you'll regret it.”

He swallowed.

“Your Highness, I was only—”

“Leave.”

“But—”

“Now.”

He hesitated.

I tightened my grip.

He quickly pulled himself free and hurried away.

I watched him disappear through the garden gates before turning back.

Lycan was staring at me.

“What?”

He didn't answer.

Instead, his gaze dropped to my hand.

I followed it.

Several rose thorns had pierced my palm.

I hadn't even noticed.

Apparently, I'd grabbed the guard hard enough that my hand had caught against the rose bush too.

Blood trickled down my fingers.

Lycan's expression changed.

“You hurt yourself.”

I looked at my palm.

“It’s nothing.”

He walked toward me.

“Sit.”

“I can remove them myself.”

“I know.”

He held out his hand.

I stared at it.

There was something strangely commanding about the gesture.

Perhaps it was because he had never spoken to me like that before.

I sat.

Lycan crouched in front of me.

He carefully took my hand.

His fingers were warm against my skin.

I watched as he gently pulled the first thorn free.

Then another.

He was careful with every movement, as though he were afraid of hurting me.

“You're surprisingly gentle.”

He glanced up.

“You're surprisingly difficult.”

I almost smiled.

“Is that an insult?”

“Maybe.”

He continued removing the thorns.

I watched him in silence.

His brows were slightly furrowed with concentration.

A strand of dark hair had fallen across his forehead.

Without thinking, I almost reached out to move it.

I stopped myself.

My fingers curled against my knee instead.

What was wrong with me?

Why was I suddenly noticing things I had never noticed before?

The shape of his face.

The warmth of his hands.

The way his eyes softened whenever he looked at me.

I quickly looked away.

When the final thorn was removed, Lycan turned my hand over and examined the small wounds.

“There.”

He released me.

I stared at my palm.

Then at him.

“Thank you.”

He nodded.

For a few seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then his eyes met mine.

“Why did you defend me?”

I frowned.

“What?”

“You heard me.”

I looked toward the roses.

“I don't like watching people mistreat what belongs to me.”

His expression changed.

Only slightly.

But I noticed.

His smile disappeared.

I realized how that sounded.

My eyes returned to his.

“You're my blood slave,” I added quickly.

The words felt wrong the moment they left my mouth.

Lycan's gaze dropped.

“Right.”

Something about the way he said it bothered me.

It wasn't anger.

It wasn't defiance.

It was disappointment.

And somehow, that was worse.

I swallowed.

“You are.”

“I know.”

He stood.

For some reason, I didn't like the distance that suddenly appeared between us.

“Lycan.”

He looked at me.

I wanted to explain.

I wanted to tell him that wasn't what I meant.

But what did I mean?

I didn't know.

I had spent years protecting myself by keeping everyone at a distance.

A title.

A wall.

A cold expression.

Those things had always been enough.

But Lycan was slowly slipping through all of them.

And I didn't know what to do about it.

So I did what I had always done whenever something frightened me.

I masked it.

I looked away.

“You should be more careful around the roses.”

He stared at me for a moment.

Then nodded.

“I will.”

He turned to leave.

I watched him walk away.

My chest felt strangely heavy.

I looked down at my wounded palm.

Then at the roses surrounding me.

For the first time, I wondered if perhaps I had hurt him far more deeply than any thorn could have hurt me.

  • The Wolf Beneath The Roses    Chapter 7: His Name

I realized something embarrassing that morning.I didn't know his name. For weeks, I had called him little wolf.He had never complained.Perhaps he had gotten used to it.Or perhaps he simply didn't care enough to correct me.Either way, the realization bothered me.I was sitting beneath the rose-covered arch, trimming a few dead leaves when I glanced at him.He was sitting a short distance away, watching me.Or rather, pretending not to watch me.Ever since what happened a few days ago, things between us had been different.Neither of us had mentioned it.Neither of us had spoken about how our faces had almost touched. How his fingers had rested against my cheek. How our lips had brushed for the briefest moment before the guard interrupted us.But I remembered. And judging by the way he occasionally looked away whenever our eyes met, so did he.I cleared my throat."What is your name?"He looked at me."My name?""Yes."He seemed surprised by the question.I lowered the pruning shea

By then, having the little wolf around had become normal.I hated admitting that. When I woke in the morning, I expected to hear the familiar sound of chains outside my door. When I entered the garden, I expected to find him somewhere nearby. And when I returned to my room after tending the roses, I found myself wondering whether he had eaten. It was irritating.I had spent years learning not to depend on anyone.Yet somehow, a werewolf I had initially considered nothing more than a convenient blood source had become part of my routine. I found myself worrying about his well-being and longing for his presence, which was odd.One morning, I found him sitting beneath the rose-covered arch.He was holding a small piece of bread.I stopped."Where did you get that?"He looked up."The kitchen.""You stole it?"He frowned."No.""Then?""They gave it to me."

  • The Wolf Beneath The Roses    Chapter 5: Care

Eventually, the little wolf stopped fighting.I noticed it one morning when the guards brought him into the garden.Usually, he would pull against his shackles, glare at everyone, and complain about being dragged around like a prisoner. That morning, he simply walked beside them.Quietly.His eyes were lowered, and his steps were calm.I looked up from the rose bush I was tending."What happened to you?"He glanced at me."What?""You didn't complain."He shrugged."I've realized something."I raised an eyebrow."That I'm unbearable?""No."He sat down near the rose bushes."That there's no way out of here."The words were so simple that I didn't know what to say.He had finally accepted it.Rose Manor was surrounded by guards. The gates were constantly watched, and neither of us had enough freedom to get anywhere near them. The little wolf had tried before.I knew because I'd seen the bruises afterward. Now, he seemed to understand that fighting every day wouldn't change anything. So

  • The Wolf Beneath The Roses    Chapter 4: Roses

War had a way of making the world feel smaller.Even inside Rose Manor, I could feel it.News arrived in fragments.A territory had fallen.A noble family had been attacked. The eastern border was becoming unstable. The Vampire King had sent more soldiers toward the northern territories. And somewhere beyond those walls, vampires were turning against vampires. The kingdom was drowning in conflict. But Rose Manor remained untouched. It was as if the chaos couldn't cross its gates.Days passed. Then weeks. And my life became strangely simple.Wake.Eat what little food they gave me.Tend to the roses.Feed the little wolf.Sleep.Repeat.At first, I hated it.I hated the silence.I hated the routine. Most of all, I hated that no one came for me.No messenger. No soldier. Not even my father.Nothing.So I stopped waiting. If Rose Manor wanted to swallow me whole, I would at least make sure it looked beautiful while doing it.Every morning, I walked through the gardens. The roses were eve

  • The Wolf Beneath The Roses    Chapter 3: Little Wolf

I had stopped counting the days.At first, I tried.I scratched tiny marks into the stone wall beside my bed whenever I woke. But after a while, even that became pointless. There was no sunlight in my room.No visitors. No news from the kingdom.Only the same four walls, the same heavy chains around my wrists, and guards who barely looked at me when I spoke.I was hungry. Not the ordinary kind of hunger I had known before. This was different. It gnawed at me from the inside, leaving my body weak and my head heavy.I had lost weight. My skin had grown pale, and even standing for too long made my vision blur."Water."The guard outside my door didn't move."Please."Nothing.I lowered my head against the wall.I had been a prince once.People had bowed when I entered a room. Now I had to beg for water.A bitter laugh escaped me.Silas had taken everything from me.My title. My freedom. My future. And apparently, even my dignity.I was beginning to wonder how long I would survive in Rose
