Vera

I push the door open and find Noah sprawled across my bed, staring at nothing and deep in sleep. His breathing is gentle, without a care in the world. Seeing him like this brings a warmth to my chest. He's dressed in fresh clothes, probably brought by the warriors who share his build: dark blue jeans and a plain black t-shirt. I have to admit, nobody ever made plain look this good.

I don't want to disturb him, so I creep to my bathroom and notice someone's been here. He must have showered and changed right in this room, waiting for me to return.

I start filling the tub with hot water and healing herbs. That should be enough to work out the soreness in my muscles. My body doesn't mend as quickly as the rest of the pack because my wolf hasn't connected with me yet. That's why I've always had to be more careful than everyone else. It's what made me a skilled fighter: while the others didn't worry about their wounds because they'd be fine by morning, I had to think smarter and move faster since I didn't share that advantage. So many times in training, others got hurt in ways that would be fatal for me. For them, training was just practice. For me, it was often a matter of life and death.

I run the shower first, washing every part of myself, clearing away all the grime and dried blood from the day. I had patches of blood, dirt, and goddess knows what else stuck to my skin. My nose wrinkled each time I had to scrub hard to remove them.

Once I'm finished, I lower myself into the bath and sink beneath the water. A sigh of relief escapes me. This is exactly what I needed. I keep everything under except my face, careful of the stitches on my forehead.

I use this time to meditate like I always do, and this time I try to concentrate on the visions or... *dreams*... I had. They feel more like a hazy memory now, and I can sense myself losing them as more time passes. Maybe meditating on them, trying to pull them back, will keep them alive in my mind.

After about twenty minutes of breathing exercises, it's obvious my mind is too exhausted for this right now. I can't recall anything meaningful, only fragments of what I *might* have seen. I know there's some great importance to this, but I can't bring the memories forward no matter how hard I try.

I let another ten minutes pass, then climb out of the tub, dry myself, and put on a red dress, traditional for wolf funeral ceremonies. It's a simple satin wrap dress with short sleeves that falls just below my mid-calf. I stop to look at myself in the mirror, my fingers tracing my face.

I look pretty beaten up. The still swollen stitches on my forehead do nothing for my complexion. I look like a sick orphan from another century. My dark circles stand out more than before, even though I just woke from a very long sleep. How long was I out for, anyway?

I fix my hair quickly, brushing through all the knots and tangles. It looks halfway decent when I'm done, at least it's straight again.

I think about putting on makeup to hide how awful I feel inside but decide against it. This isn't the time to pretend everything's fine. The whole pack feels terrible too, just like me.

When I open the bathroom door, Noah is still sleeping. I consider leaving him here for the whole ceremony. He's been through so much these past few weeks, I'm sure he needs the rest.

As I watch him and weigh my choices, the ceremonial horn sounds in the distance, marking the start of the Pyre ceremony.

Noah shoots up from the bed, quick on his feet, his eyes tired and red.

"Wh—what's that?" He's scrambling to put his shoes on. "Another attack? Vera, where…" His eyes find me.

We stay like this for a moment, him staring at me. I can see the veins in his neck pumping blood fast. His jaw drops.

"Wow..." He manages once he pulls himself together.

I smile gently, enjoying the obvious compliment. Then again, he's my mate. He's not exactly objective about how I look.

I take a few steps to the middle of the room and hold my hand out to him.

"Come on, we have a ceremony to attend. Don't bother with the shoes. You won't need them." All our ceremonies are done barefoot, connecting directly to the ground.

He takes my hand and pulls me close, holding me gently but securely. I breathe in deep, taking in his scent and locking this feeling away in my memory. He smells like the forest, which makes no sense. Nobody should smell like the forest itself.

"I'm so sorry, Vera. For everything. If we hadn't come here, this would have never happened."

I hold him a little tighter.

"None of this is your fault, Noah. Not yours, not Eli's, not Lucas's. Those wolves died with honor, defending their own. That's what this ceremony is about. Not placing blame."

I meant every word. None of the other wolves in the pack felt any different. The truth was, if that thing was out there, there was no promise it wouldn't eventually come for us too.

We stay like this for a while, both of us finding comfort in each other. Then, hand in hand, we walk out of the pack house into the open field toward the pyre.

  • The Wolf Doctor’s Forbidden Mate   I'm too shocked to look away.

VeraThe pyre stands in the center of a wide open field, ringed by trees. Tonight the moon shines brighter than usual, with nothing in the sky to block her light. The bodies of our fallen warriors lie wrapped in linen, placed with care upon the pyre. There are far too many of them. Each step forward makes my heart sink further.Noah and I arrive at the ceremony, and most of the pack is already gathered. I notice right away that Eli and Lucas are nowhere in sight. I turn to Noah to ask, but he already knows what I'm about to say."They'll come. They just weren't sure if we'd want them here after everything that's happened."That answer is enough for me. We move deeper into the crowd, and just like before, people part to let Noah and me through. We find an empty blanket on the grass and sit down. Noah speaks up, breaking my thoughts. "This is strange. Watching wolves from this close.""How so?" I ask, actually wanting to know. I never considered it before, but just as wolves grow up hea

  • The Wolf Doctor’s Forbidden Mate   My Alpha and her dirty, dirty mind.

VeraI make my way to the pack house, knowing Sofia will be on the top floor. As I walk the hallways, I catch people staring at me the same way they did back at the clinic. I'm not sure what to think about it, but honestly, I'm too tired to care. The day has been endless and it's not even close to being over. When I finally reach the Alpha's door, I pause. What if she's sleeping?*Come in,* her voice fills my mind. Sofia."The woman of the hour," she says gently as I push the door open. Her room is the biggest in the pack house, which makes sense. It's less of a bedroom and more of a private wing, with tall French doors stretching from floor to ceiling and a huge balcony beyond them. Her bed faces the northern wall, tucked between the two sets of doors.I walk toward her. She's propped up on the bed with the twins sleeping beside her, a pile of papers scattered across her lap."Alpha," I say, saluting her.We hold each other's gaze for a long moment, then drop the formality entirely.

  • The Wolf Doctor’s Forbidden Mate   I know I don't need to tell you this...

VeraMy legs quit on me the moment the surgeon's eyes find mine. I hit the floor hard, knees first, then palms. My heart is slamming against my ribs like it wants out. This can't be real. The only father I've ever had cannot be lying dead on that table.I drag myself closer, tears already building behind my eyes. But when I get near enough to see the face on the table, something doesn't add up.This isn't Doctor Owens.I turn my gaze up to the surgeon, hope flickering back to life inside me, as he walks around the table and crouches beside me. His eyes are kind, but there's a weight of grief sitting in them."Vera, I take it. No, this isn't Doctor Owens. This is Nathan. He was one of the warriors stationed at the border when the beast attacked."Together we look at the warrior's still body. The tears I'd been holding finally spill down my cheeks."As for Doctor Owens, his surgery went well. He's coming out of the anesthesia now in a recovery space we set up in his office."The crying

  • The Wolf Doctor’s Forbidden Mate   Time of death

VeraI lie there with my eyes shut, letting the last dregs of adrenaline drain out of me. My breath comes in ragged pulls, and a high whine sits in my ears from pushing my body past every limit I had. When my pulse finally starts to slow, I lift my lids and force myself upright. Every muscle screams in protest. The ones who had been in the clearing have all crowded around Noah. Eli. Me. And the beast. Now that it's out in the open, some stare at it with curiosity, others with plain fear. A few are bold enough to prod it with their toes, checking that it's truly gone. The thing doesn't move. Doesn't breathe. Just lies there, a heap of what used to be a nightmare.Noah is stretched out beside me, still wearing his lycan shape. I rest my palm against his brow and wait for him to open his eyes.We did it.We actually fucking did it.Someone in the crowd lets out a howl of pure joy, and it catches like wildfire. More howls follow, then more. I can't help but grin at the sound. Around me, t

  • The Wolf Doctor’s Forbidden Mate   The three of us together

VeraThe beast comes at me full speed and I swear I've never been so grateful for my ten-mile-a-day running habit. Without it, I'd be chimera food right about now. All those wolves tearing at it, all those lycans throwing themselves at its body, and still its only focus is me. It wants me dead. Nothing else matters to it.Then I hear something new. More wolves. Running hard from the direction of the packhouse. Within seconds, around fifty of them burst into the clearing, teeth bared and ready. They must be the ones who were guarding the other borders.I need to end this fast. We can't leave the borders open for long and I can't stomach losing any more of our people.I sprint toward the incoming wolves, scanning for their lieutenant. I spot him quickly and cut my way over to him. The beast will be occupied with this fresh wave of attackers for a few seconds. That's all I need."I need you to buy me time! I have to get that spear out of its eye!"My voice comes out desperate. I can see
