Chapter 2

Penulis: Judy Summers
The man standing in front of me now was no longer the dying werewolf I once saved.

He was the Wolf King who ruled over everything.

And I was no longer a sheltered heiress, either.

After my parents died in an accident, our family company was seized by a rival corporation. Now, I was nothing more than a pitiful hanger-on, living at someone else's mercy.

The laughter, music, and dancing in the hall fell into dead silence at the king's anger.

The guests held their breath and turned their curious gazes toward me.

Bella dabbed at the corner of her eye where no tears existed.

"Selena, you've always been so proper. How could you end up pregnant without even knowing who the father is? You're not doing this just to get back at Cade for choosing me as his queen, are you? Did you really go find some random guy out of spite?"

That line poured fuel on the fire and instantly ignited Cade's hatred.

"Who's the man who touched you? Speak!"

Bella put on a show of gentle concern. "Your Majesty, there are too many people here. It's understandable if Selena doesn't want to say it out loud."

A flash of fury lit Cade's eyes as he asked the attendant behind him, "In this pack, what punishment does a woman deserve for betraying the Wolf King and carrying an illegitimate child?"

The attendant answered nervously, "Your Majesty, according to the rules, she should be thrown into the dungeon and starved for three days and nights."

I was shoved into a pitch-black room.

When the lock clicked shut, I suddenly realized something was wrong.

"What is this place? Let me out! You don't have the right to imprison me!"

A servant sneered from outside the door.

"This room was specially prepared for you by the Queen. Just stay put in there and behave."

The room was cold and damp.

I curled up, hugging myself into a tight ball.

A huge firework suddenly exploded in the sky.

It reminded me of the first time I took Cade to see fireworks. He had jumped in alarm, but still moved instinctively to shield me.

"Careful!"

Laughing, I peeked out from behind him. "It's just fireworks. There's no danger."

"Fire…works?"

"When humans have something worth celebrating, we set off fireworks," I explained patiently.

Boom! Another firework burst overhead.

It seemed Cade had remembered my words and brought fireworks back to the wolf pack.

Only this time, they were blooming for Bella.

In truth, Cade had once treated me sincerely.

On stormy nights, he would hold me gently in his arms, pat my back, and lull me to sleep.

When I fell from a swing, he would always catch me without fail.

He would kneel on one knee to help me put on my heels, and when my feet hurt too much to walk, he would carry me home on his back.

When I bathed, he would help lather soap without ever looking at me, his face bright red as he handed me a towel.

When did things start to change?

Probably from the moment I told Bella about the werewolf secret.

Bella was a child my parents adopted from an orphanage. We grew up together, as close as real sisters.

One time, Cade had exhausted me so badly that I couldn't even get out of bed.

I was worried no one would feed him his medicine, so I told Bella about the werewolf I had been hiding in my lab.

Bella showed intense interest in Cade. She kept asking me questions about him.

I had always treated her like a sister I could tell anything to. I even unbuttoned my collar and showed her the wolf bite mark on my shoulder.

"Look. This is what he left behind."

Bella froze, then slowly raised her hand and brushed the mark with her fingertips.

In her eyes, I saw a burning desire.

But I didn't think much of it.

I even ignored the way Cade had started pulling away from me.

I hired a jewelry designer to create a pair of matching necklaces.

I planned to remove the custom collar from Cade's neck and tell him, "I don't need a servant. I need a boyfriend."

But in the garden, I saw Cade confessing to Bella with deep emotion.

"Bella, if I regain my freedom one day, would you be willing to be mine?"

Bella nodded through tears.

Cade leaned in and kissed her lips.

Then, little by little, his mouth moved to her collarbone.

Finally, he paused over the wolf bite mark on her shoulder.

My eyes widened in disbelief.

Had they already…?

After that, I was depressed for a long time.

I couldn't understand why Cade would fall for Bella.

Until one day, I overheard their conversation.

"Cade, even though Selena only sees you as a research subject, don't worry. Before she hands you to my father's biotech company, I'll help you escape."

Cade let out a cold laugh.

"It's fine. I've already rallied my old subordinates. I'll return to the wolf pack soon. When that day comes, you're coming with me."

I stormed out in rage and slapped Bella hard across the face.

"How could you slander me like that?! When did I ever treat Cade as a research subject? Cade, listen to me. I'm actually…"

But he shoved me away and threw a stack of photos at my feet.

In the pictures were Cade's blood serum samples.

In truth, those samples were taken to develop medicine for him.

However, I had no way to defend myself.

I could only watch as Cade clenched Bella's hand and walked away in fury, his back turned to me.

Julian never rushed me into accepting him.He filled the hollow in my heart little by little, quietly and patiently. He knew I suffered from night terrors. After losing the baby, I often woke up crying in the middle of the night. Every time I woke, I would find Julian sitting not far away, holding a book and keeping watch. He never crossed a single line.He would only read to me in a low, steady voice until I fell asleep again. He taught me how to shoot and how to fight."Selena, in a world where the strong prey on the weak, I don't want you relying on anyone. Not even me. I want you strong, strong enough that no werewolf ever dares look down on you again."He built a world-class medical research lab for me on the estate. He supported me in returning to my old work.Eventually, after winning award after award on my own merit, I earned the respect of his entire family. At my birthday celebration a year later, Julian held my hand as we stood before the floor-to-ceiling window

Cade didn't leave. The once untouchable Wolf King now looked like a discarded drifter, rooted outside the estate gates.Whether it was pouring rain or blazing sunshine, whenever I pulled back my bedroom curtains, I could always see that statue-like figure standing straight outside the wrought iron gate.He was no longer wearing that ridiculous groundskeeper outfit. Instead, he had changed back into a black shirt soaked through by rain.It was the first gift I had ever given him three years ago.The cuffs were already worn thin, yet he wore them like a treasure.Julian suggested more than once that he should release the dogs or have the guards dump Cade a few miles away in the hills. However, I stopped him every time.I sipped my tea and turned a page in my book. "An extra statue at the gate doesn't look half bad, does it?"And so, the standoff lasted an entire month. One rainy evening, Julian and I were heading downtown to a concert at the opera house. The black Rolls-Royce

The afternoon sunlight was perfect. It spread a warm and gentle gleam across every inch of the estate's lawn.If this were back when I lived among the wolves, I would probably be brewing medicine for Cade tirelessly in such nice weather. But now, I was wearing a light white dress, barefoot, sitting on the garden swing.A soft breeze brushed past. It carried the fresh scent of earth and grass."Higher. Push me higher!"Julian gave the swing a slightly stronger push, sending me soaring toward the blue sky. The weightless feeling made me laugh out loud, straight from the heart.Even I found that laughter unfamiliar. So this was what it felt like to be alive. It was actually…joyful."Alright, my little princess. Any higher, and you'll fly right off the planet," Julian said with a laugh as he brought the swing to a gentle stop.He walked around to stand in front of me.As if performing a magic trick, he pulled out a bouquet of freshly picked wild daisies, still dotted with morni

At the same time, in the wolf palace…Cade was reviewing documents when he suddenly clutched his chest and collapsed from the throne. He had never felt pain like this before. It wasn't just physical; it felt like his entire soul was being torn apart."No…"The moment he opened his mouth, blood sprayed out, and cold sweat soaked through his clothes. He felt it clearly. The mental bond connecting him to his mate had snapped. The senses that had been clouded for so long were suddenly ripped open by overwhelming grief.Selena's final emotions flooded into his mind: despair, finality, and an all-consuming hatred over losing her child.Cade even sensed the fading bloodline aura of that lost little life. That aura…was exactly the same as his own."Ugh!" Cade's rage surged to his chest, and he spat out another mouthful of blood. The clash of emotions nearly split him in two. One half was wild joy, and the other half was uncontrollable fury.He finally understood why hearing that

Julian took me back to his estate. The place was grand, fully equipped with everything imaginable.More importantly, it had airtight security and cutting-edge anti-werewolf defenses. Werewolves couldn't get anywhere near it.Julian brought in the best medical team money could buy to treat me. He also hired experienced caregivers and health specialists. They designed a full recovery plan tailored just for me.I smiled and said to him, "I'm a doctor myself. Do you really think I need someone else to heal me?"Julian was firm. "Ms. Feron, I know your skills are exceptional. But no matter how good you are, you can only heal the wounds on your body."He tapped his chest lightly."And I want to heal the wounds here."I shrugged helplessly. Since he was my father's longtime friend, I didn't argue."Fine, fine. We'll do it your way."Three months passed in the blink of an eye.I practically had to do a backflip in front of Julian before he finally believed I was fully recovered, bo

He couldn't find Selena, no matter how hard he searched.Other times, he would dream of Selena lying pale and lifeless in his arms. No matter how desperately he called her name, she wouldn't wake up.Once, he jolted awake from a nightmare and reached out instinctively, wrapping his arms tightly around the woman sleeping beside him.Like clutching the last lifeline, he trembled and whispered, "Selena… Don't leave me…"The body in his arms stiffened instantly.
