He wasn’t sure, was he? Still, the way his eyes lingered on her sent a chill down her spine. Was that hunger… the kind that spoke of wanting to claim her? The thought unsettled her. Would he force himself on her if she ever left with him?

From everything she’d read, mating was meant to be mutual, an act of consent and respect between breedmates. But she was his enemy. What if revenge outweighed instinct? Unless hurting her meant hurting himself. Unless causing her pain would torment him, too.

Her thoughts spun in circles, muddled by the sudden wave of weakness washing over her. She wanted to lie down, but the conversation had reached an edge she didn’t want to step away from.

“You changed your plans too quickly,” she said, steering the moment, watching him walk into her trap while thinking it was his own.

“Killing you seemed too easy. It wouldn’t satisfy me,” he replied, his gaze drifting to her throat, holding there a beat too long.

Not killing her was a good sign—though she couldn’t

Aria sat on her bed, flipping through books on pregnancy prevention. None of them seemed safe enough. The risk was always there. But strangely, she realized she was more worried about protecting her heart than protecting herself from getting pregnant. She let out a dry chuckle at her own frustration. If nothing was truly safe, then being with Marcus wouldn’t be safe either. She couldn’t keep pretending with him, playing along with his charm. She couldn’t let him touch her. Maybe it was for the best. Like Ares had told her—pretending too long would only make her lose herself. And then there was Ares. Just thinking about being with him felt different. The idea of giving herself to him while keeping her walls up unsettled her. She knew the truth: when she let those walls down, feelings had already crept in. If she allowed more, those feelings might grow. And then… what if she changed her mind? What if she abandoned her mission? What if love made her weak before she faced the enemy?Aria

Ares sat in the laboratory, reading about breedmates. The more he read, the more certain he became of his suspicions yet anger and frustration grew alongside them. He hated the thought of her belonging to another man, especially one he despised. At first, he had wanted to be her first, to give her a memory worth keeping. But now he wasn’t sure. Would it mean anything if she kept her walls up? The point of intimacy would be lost. And if he asked her to lower those walls, even just once, he knew raising them again would be nearly impossible. It would only lead to heartbreak for them both. His grip on the book tightened, his jaw set, his eyes burning. He had already gone too deep. If he took her to bed, if he learned what it felt like to have her beneath him warm, bare, wrapped around him then he would crave more, not less. And wanting more would only destroy him.He had learned the truth: knowing something was often more painful than never knowing at all.Now look at him. Once, he had n

“I was looking for you,” she said.“Really?” He shut the door behind him, his eyes never leaving hers. The moment stirred memories of her dream, and her heartbeat quickened.Ares closed the distance between them, his gaze growing darker with every step. Aria stood her ground, though the air felt charged with tension.“You make it hard to stay away and act like a gentleman when you behave like this,” he murmured, stopping right in front of her.“You showed me you didn’t want distance when you left this mark on my neck,” she replied, brushing her hair aside to reveal it.He smirked. “That was out of frustration… and I’m still frustrated.”“Then I’ll keep my distance,” she said, brushing past him toward the door. But as she reached for it, Ares’s arm came around her, slamming it shut. He leaned close, his voice low against her ear. “You don’t come and go as you please, Your Highness.”Trapped between him and the door, Aria tugged at the handle, but he held it firmly. Instead of moving ba

Marcus felt a wave of disgust churn inside him. Not because another man stirred that reaction in her, but because deep down, he wished it had been him. He wanted to be the one who drew that response from her, and the thought made him sick. His hands should never touch her unless it was to wring the life out of her and bury her along with her ridiculous inventions. Those inventions… He exhaled sharply, fighting his frustration.Aria’s eyes followed him, puzzled. She had no idea he could smell another man on her, could sense when she was aroused. That ignorance proved she hadn’t even done it to provoke him—and somehow, that only stoked his anger further. She genuinely liked the man. And Marcus couldn’t even console himself by believing she’d chosen a fool. He had seen him with his own eyes. The man was strong, vital, and he carried the scent of life in him. Worse still, Marcus could smell her fertility at its peak. The whole thing tore at his control. He took a step back, trying to leas
