Chapter 5

Author: Grogan
Just when I had decided to let things go, Jenny Lawson contacted me. She was my only remaining friend after Calista had joined the White family.

Even though we had not contacted each other in a year, I was still excited to receive her call. Thankfully, I still had someone who missed me in the pack—a friend that I could create happy memories with.

We reminisced a lot about the past. I was happy to chat with her.

In the end, she asked me out to meet her in town the following day for a day of shopping. I happily agreed to it.

The next day, we visited all the shops that we used to love, spending a happy time.

After lunch, Jenny pulled me into a shop. "Joyce, you really have to try this outfit! This really suits you!"

She placed a top on my body. I was suddenly in a daze at the familiar scene.

Jimmy used to pick out clothes for me in the past. He always said that if I liked it, he would buy the entire rack of clothes for me.

Thinking about the past, I smiled bitterly. Just when I wa

Oliver and Jimmy looked everywhere for me.In the end, they found the Elder's place by tracing the source of the money. However, guarding the Land of Winder was a werewolf's secret mission.Dylan had no choice but to refuse seeing them to keep the secret.Oliver and Jimmy waited in front of his house day after day. One day, a snowstorm hailed down on them and they almost froze to death.Dylan knew what happened between us, so he did not tell them where I went. He merely shook his head disappointingly at them.Oliver knelt in front of him, crying, saying that he wanted to apologize to me and see me once again.Dylan said with a sigh, "All you can do is wait. If everything goes successfully, she'll return. If not…"He trailed off.Looking at the almost-frozen Oliver and Jimmy, he sighed and said softly, "If you love her so much, why did you treat her that way?"Jimmy and Oliver cried in silence. Dylan shook his head in disappointment and left the room. What was the point of r

Oliver was distracted the entire day after I hung up on him. He stared at his work in a daze, unable to shake off a terrible feeling.Jimmy suddenly rushed in and exclaimed with panic and fear, Oliver, Joyce is missing! Someone saw her leaving our pack!"Oliver was bewildered. He sprang up before sitting down once more. He tried to maintain calmness and elegance, as if trying to console Jimmy while consoling himself. "There's no need to panic. She left us once before, and she still returned a year later. She's just angry at me so she pretends to go missing to get my attention!" Oliver barked condescendingly. However, after a few moments of thought, he took his phone and called me. When he heard the disconnected tone, a hint of panic slowly creeped up on his face."Lucy called me earlier too. She thought that something was off with Joyce! Oliver, do you think she would've…""Shut up!"As the feeling of uneasiness grew, Oliver grabbed his jacket on the chair and walked off."Le

I did not have much to pack. After packing, I called the Elder.Dylan was shocked as he said, "There's still a few days left. Don't you want to spend your time with family? Have you already said your goodbyes?"The door opened. Jimmy had returned home."Yes."I hung up the call. When I left with my luggage, I bumped into Jimmy entering. He saw my luggage and frowned. Grabbing my hand, he said, "Joyce, Oliver didn't mean what he said. He was speaking out of anger. We don't want you to leave. We only hope you'll admit your mistakes and apologize."I stopped in my tracks. I did not want my last sentence to be about how I was not wrong, so I said nothing. I shrugged his hand off and left.Jimmy suddenly panicked seeing how determined I was. He had never seen me that way. When he came to his senses and thought about going after me, I was already gone.On the day I was about to enter the Land of Winter, only the Elder came to send me off. He looked around and noticed that no other f

Calista was sobbing loudly, instantly attracting the passersby attention.Jimmy immediately took off his jacket and wrapped it around Calista before looking at me angrily. "Joyce, what did you do to Calista now?"I froze on the spot.Calista continued through staggered sobs."Joyce said that I wasn't good enough for the custom-made skirt. She stormed into the dressing room and tried to tear my skirt into pieces. She… She even tore my shirt. She wanted to embarrass me in public, letting everyone know that I'm not the true daughter of the White family…"Everyone was in an uproar. They started pointing fingers and calling me names.I shook my head in helplessness, casting a pleading gaze to Jimmy."Jimmy, I didn't do it! When I entered, she…"Jimmy slapped me, stopping me from explaining myself. He looked at me clutching my hand and barked, "It has been a year and nothing's changed! You never realize what you did wrong!"My ears were ringing. Half of my face was instantly swoll

I was not as sad as I expected after hearing the answer from Oliver.18-year-old me would have been upset for a long time, but at that moment, I looked at them quietly and replied calmly, "Okay."Oliver furrowed his brows in annoyance. "Joyce, you need to grow up and stop fooling around."I said nothing but merely looked at Calista. She stood behind Oliver and Jimmy, looking at me provokingly with a victorious and smug smile.'Congratulations, Calista,' I thought.I looked away and turned around to leave when Jimmy grabbed my wrist."Joyce, let's go home together."He was afraid to hurt me once more, so he held me much lighter.I gently pried his hand away and shook my head. "I have work to do."That was not my home anymore. I did not want to go back."Joyce, Oliver and Jimmy really love and miss you. They knew you were mad, so after you left, they told me to move out of your bedroom. They even locked it up so I can't even enter! I'll return your bedroom to you. Please don't

The next day, I paid my mother's grave a visit. She was the one I missed the most when I left a year ago.I had not visited her in a year. I cleaned her grave while I muttered to myself."Mom, goodbye."I had so many things I wanted to say to her, but when I saw her grave, all I could think of was goodbye.I looked at the grave covered in wild grass. It looked like Oliver and Jimmy had been so busy looking after Calista while I was gone that they had not visited our mother at all.I smiled at her grave. "Mom, don't blame Oliver and Jimmy. After Dad passed away, the pack has kept them busy. It's not that they don't want to come. They were just too busy.""What right do you have to say such things on our behalf?!" a cold voice barked.I turned around to see Oliver, Jimmy, and Calista.Looking at Oliver's contempt gaze, I bit my lips and took a step back.Oliver pretended he did not see me. He and Jimmy placed a fresh bouquet in front of Mom's grave before turning around and mock

Lucy felt sorry for me standing alone in the dining room. She walked over to me and said, "Ms. Joyce, have some food. You've been working the entire day."I wiped away my tears and nodded at her before taking a seat next to her.She was probably trying to cheer me up as she deliberately told me of all the interesting things that happened to my mother in the past, also the embarrassing things Oliver, Jimmy, and I did as children. The atmosphere livened up once more. That was the first time I laughed so happily ever since I left the family.Lucy looked at the pineapple pie and said, "Ms. Joyce, you like your pies hot, right? Why don't I heat this up for you?"Lucy used to be Mom's housekeeper. She watched us all grow up. She was considered part of the family. My eyes stung as tears welled up in them. It turned out that there was still someone in this family who remembered what I liked. When Lucy came back out from the kitchen with the hot pie, I took a bank card from my pocket an

"Joyce, have you really thought this through? You have a natural advantage in combat. You're the most talented she-wolf I've ever seen, but once you go to the Land of Winter, you won't be able to contact any werewolves for the next twenty years, including your family."This mission is really dangerous. You might even die there. Didn't your mother pass away in the mission too?"The Elder of the pack, Dylan Admiral, was patiently trying to dissuade me. After all, he watched me grow up.I was still young, and my life was just about to start.I nodded determinedly and smiled. "My dear Elder, I'm ready. The werewolves need to be guarded. I will continue my mother's legacy and protect the entire pack."Dylan sighed at my determination. He accepted the application form that I filled up and said to me gently, "You can leave next week. Don't you have two brothers that love you very much? The next time you'll be able to see them is in twenty years, or even never again. You should say your
