ログインI could not move after Adrian told me that Victor had escaped. For several seconds, I simply stared at him. “He escaped?”
Adrian nodded.
“How?”
“We do not know yet.”
“But he was in police custody.”
“I know.”
“Then how did he get out?”
“We are still trying to find that out.”
I wrapped my arms around myself, and the thought of Victor being somewhere outside terrified me, not because I believed he would come looking for me simply because he wanted me back, but because I no longer knew what Victor was capable of doing. The man I had loved for six years had become a stranger.
Adrian walked toward me. “You are not going anywhere alone.”
“I know.”
“You need to stay close to me.”
I looked at him. “Why?”
“Because Victor knows you.”
“That does not answer my question.”
He was silent for a moment. “Because I care about what happens to you.”
My heart skipped, and I looked away. Those words should not have affected me so much, since I had only known Adrian for a few days, yet something about him made me feel safe in a way I had not felt for a long time. I was still afraid, but I did not feel completely alone anymore.
My phone suddenly rang, and I looked at the screen to find an unknown number. I hesitated before answering. “Hello?”
Nobody spoke, though I could hear breathing on the other end. “Who is this?”
Still nothing. Then a man’s voice finally came through. “You should have stayed with Victor.”
My blood went cold. “Who are you?”
“You have no idea what you are getting yourself into.”
“What do you want?”
“You.”
The call ended, and I lowered the phone slowly. Adrian took it from my hand. “What did they say?”
I told him, and his expression hardened. “We are leaving.”
“Where?”
“Somewhere private.”
We left the hotel through the back entrance, and Adrian drove for almost an hour before stopping outside a large house surrounded by tall trees. I looked at the building. “Whose house is this?”
“My grandmother’s.”
“You have a grandmother?”
He gave me a brief smile. “Yes.”
“Is she here?”
“No. She lives abroad.”
We entered the house, which was beautiful but warm, unlike the cold luxury I had become used to around Victor. There were family photographs on the walls, and I stopped in front of one. Adrian was standing beside a woman who looked much younger than I expected. “Is this your mother?”
“Yes.”
“She is beautiful.”
“She was.”
I looked at him, hearing the sadness in his voice unmistakably. “She died?”
“Yes.”
“I am sorry.”
He nodded. “She died when I was twenty.”
I looked at the photograph again. “You must miss her.”
“Every day.”
I did not know what to say, but sometimes grief did not need advice. It only needed someone willing to understand it.
We walked into the living room, and Adrian placed his phone on the table. “I need to make some calls.” I nodded, and he walked away. I sat on the sofa and opened my father’s folder again, unable to stop thinking about what Victor had said. The Marlowe Group. My father had left it to me. I turned another page and found a document I had not noticed before, reading the heading. Transfer of Ownership. My name was written beneath it.
I stared at the document. The company was legally mine, and I had no idea what I was supposed to do with that information. I had never wanted to run a company. I had wanted a quiet life, a home, a family, a man who loved me. I had wanted simple happiness. Instead, I was sitting in a house I had never seen before, holding documents that could make me one of the most powerful women in the city. A thought suddenly entered my mind. Maybe my father had known that one day I would need that power.
Adrian returned to the room. “What did you find?”
I showed him the document, and he looked at it. “It is exactly what I expected.”
“You knew?”
“Yes.”
I frowned. “You knew the company was legally mine?”
“Yes.”
“Why did you not tell me?”
“Because I wanted you to discover it when you were ready.”
I shook my head. “Everyone keeps saying that.”
“I know.”
“I am tired of secrets.”
He sat beside me. “I understand.”
I looked at him. “Then no more secrets between us.”
He nodded. “No more.”
I studied his face. “Do you have feelings for me?”
He did not look away. “Yes.”
My heart started beating faster. “When did that happen?”
“I do not know.”
“But you knew me before.”
“I knew the girl your father was trying to protect.”
“And now?”
He looked at me. “Now I know the woman who is trying to find herself.”
My eyes filled with tears. “I do not know who I am anymore.”
“You will.”
He reached for my hand, and I allowed him to hold it. “I am afraid,” I whispered.
“So am I.”
“You?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I have spent years trying to protect you without allowing myself to care about you.”
I looked at him. “And now?”
“Now I cannot pretend anymore.”
His thumb moved gently across my hand, and I felt something inside me break open. For the first time since Victor left me, I did not feel like the woman who had been abandoned. I felt like a woman who could choose again.
I leaned toward Adrian, and he kissed my forehead. Then his phone rang, and he answered it, his expression changing instantly. “What happened?” He listened for a moment, then looked at me. “The police found Victor.”
I stood immediately. “Where?”
Adrian’s face was grim. “Your old apartment.”
My heart dropped. “What was he doing there?”
“He was looking for something.”
“What?”
Adrian stared at me. “They found your bedroom destroyed.”
I covered my mouth. “Why would he go there?”
Adrian did not answer at first. Instead, he looked at the folder in my hands. “Because there is something your father left inside that apartment.”
“What?”
“We do not know yet.”
He took his keys, and I stood. “I am coming with you.”
“No.”
“Yes.”
“It is too dangerous.”
“I am done being protected by people who refuse to tell me the truth.”
He stared at me, and I held his gaze. “I am going.”
After a long silence, he nodded. “Then stay beside me.”
We left the house together, and as we drove toward the apartment, I watched the city lights through the window. I knew that when I walked through that door again, nothing would ever be the same. I had lost Victor. I had lost the life I thought I wanted. But perhaps losing everything was the beginning of finding myself.
I reached for Adrian’s hand, and he held it tightly. Neither of us spoke, because we did not need to. For the first time, I knew one thing with certainty. Whatever waited for me inside that apartment, I would face it. I was no longer the woman who had walked away from Victor with tears in her eyes. I was becoming someone stronger, and I was finally ready to discover who that woman was.
I could not breathe. My mother was standing in front of me, the woman I had spent most of my life believing was dead, and she was looking at me with tears running down her face. I wanted to run to her, to hold her, to demand to know why she had abandoned me, but instead I stood frozen in place.“Mom?”She covered her mouth as another tear slid down her cheek. “Elena,” she said, and her voice was exactly the same as I remembered from my childhood. For one brief moment I was a little girl again, waiting for her to come home. Then the memory dissolved and everything I had believed for years came rushing back.“You’re alive,” I said. She nodded. “Yes.”I shook my head, unable to accept it. “No.”She stepped toward me. “Please.”“Don’t come any closer.” My voice broke as I said it. “Why did you let me believe you were dead?”She looked down at the floor. “Your father told me it was the only way to keep you safe.”“My father,” I repeated, staring at her.“Yes.”“So he lied to me too.”“He w
I could not stop staring at Adrian. “They found Victor at the hospital where my uncle was treated?”“Yes.”“Then we have to go there.”Adrian nodded. “We are leaving now.”Nora followed us to the car, but Adrian stopped her before she could get inside. “You should stay here.”“No,” Nora said firmly. “I am coming with you.”Adrian looked at me, and I nodded. “Nora is coming.”He sighed. “Fine, but you both stay close to me.”The drive to the hospital felt longer than usual. I kept thinking about the wallet we had found. Daniel Carter. My uncle. A man I had buried three years ago. A man who was supposedly dead. A man who had just entered my grandmother’s house and left us proof that he was alive.I looked at Adrian. “What if Victor knows where my uncle is?”“He probably does.”“Then why was Victor at the hospital?”“To find him.”“Or to meet him.”Adrian did not answer, and that possibility frightened me more than anything he could have said. When we arrived at the hospital, several pol
I could not stop thinking about the message. Your uncle is not dead. The words followed me throughout the entire drive to my grandmother’s house. My uncle had been declared dead three years ago. I had attended his funeral. I had watched my father cry over his brother’s coffin. Or at least, I thought I had. Now I was beginning to question everything.Adrian drove silently while Nora sat in the back seat, staring at her phone. After several minutes, I finally spoke. “Do you believe the message?”Adrian kept his eyes on the road. “I believe we should find out.”“What if my uncle really is alive?”“Then we will deal with it.”I looked at him. “You say that as if everything is easy.”“It is not easy.”“Then why are you always calm?”He smiled slightly. “Because one of us needs to remain calm.”I looked away, but I could not stop myself from smiling too, and for a few seconds the fear disappeared. Then my phone vibrated again, and I looked at the screen to find another unknown number. I ope
I stared at Adrian as if I were seeing him for the first time. His name was now connected to my father’s death, and the same man who had protected me, held my hand, and kissed me was suddenly being presented as a possible suspect in the murder that had changed my life. I wanted to believe him. I did believe him. But fear had already found its way into my heart. “Are you going to run?” I asked.Adrian looked at me. “No.”“Why not?”“Because running will make me look guilty.”Nora folded her arms. “Then what are you going to do?”“Find the person who is trying to frame me.”I looked at the news report again. “Why would someone choose you?”“Because they know I was close to your father.”“And because you are protecting me.”Adrian nodded. “If they make me look guilty, they can make you doubt everything I tell you.”I swallowed. “So they want to separate us.”His eyes met mine. “Yes.”The way he said us made something move inside me, and I quickly looked away. There were too many problems
The apartment went completely dark. I could hear my own breathing, fast and uneven, while Adrian stood in front of me. “Stay close,” he whispered. I could not see his face clearly, but I could feel him moving carefully through the room. “What is happening?” I asked.“I do not know.”A loud sound came from the hallway, followed by another. Someone was moving outside the apartment. Adrian reached for my hand. “Come with me.”I followed him toward the bedroom, the darkness making every step feel dangerous. He opened the wardrobe and pulled out a small flashlight. “Keep this.” I took it. “What are you going to do?”“Find out who is outside.”“No.”He looked at me. “I am not leaving you alone.” His expression softened. “I will be right outside the door.”Before I could answer, we heard footsteps approaching, and Adrian immediately pulled me behind him. The door handle moved, and someone was trying to enter. I held my breath as Adrian reached into his jacket. The door opened suddenly, and a
The closer we came to my old apartment, the tighter my chest felt. I had lived there with Victor for almost six years, and I knew every room, every corner, and every little sound the building made at night. It had once been the place where I believed my future was waiting for me. Now I was returning because the police had found Victor there after his escape.I looked through the window as the building came into view. “What if he is still inside?” I asked.“He is not,” Adrian said.“How do you know?”“The police have searched the building.”I nodded, though I still felt nervous. When we arrived, two officers were waiting outside, and one of them approached us. “Are you Elena Carter?”“Yes.”“I need you to understand that the apartment is now part of an investigation. We will allow you inside, but do not touch anything.”I nodded, and Adrian stayed beside me as we walked upstairs. The moment I opened the door, I stopped. The apartment looked nothing like the home I remembered. Drawers h
