The Secret I Never Knew

I barely slept after receiving the message. All night, I kept turning the words over in my mind. You should have left Victor long before last night. Who was this person? How did they know about me and Victor? Why did they believe I needed to know why he had chosen Sophia?

By morning, I had convinced myself that I should ignore the message, telling myself that whatever secret Victor was hiding was no longer my problem. I had already lost enough in one night, and I did not want to give him another piece of my peace. But every time I tried to forget about it, the same question returned. Why had a stranger contacted me?

I was sitting at Nora’s kitchen table when she walked in with two cups of coffee. “You look like you did not sleep.”

“I did not.”

She placed the coffee in front of me and sat across from me. “Did Victor call again?”

I shook my head. “No. But I received a strange message.” I handed her my phone, and Nora read it twice, her expression growing serious. “Do you know who sent this?”

“No.”

“Did you tell anyone what happened last night?”

“Only you.”

She looked at the message again. “Then I think you should be careful.”

“I know.”

“You should not meet this person alone.”

I looked at her. “I have to know what they want.”

“You do not have to know anything.”

“I do,” I said, my voice quieter than I expected. “I spent six years with Victor. If there is something about those years that I never knew, I need to understand it.”

Nora sighed. “Then I am coming with you.”

At seven that evening, we arrived at the café mentioned in the message, a quiet place on the other side of the city. “Maybe this was a mistake,” Nora said as we sat near the window.

“Maybe.”

Ten minutes passed, and I began to feel foolish. Just as I reached for my phone, a man walked through the door. He was tall, dressed in a dark suit, and carried himself with a confidence that made people notice him without him saying a single word. He looked around the café, and then his eyes stopped on me. My heart began beating faster as he walked toward our table.

“Are you the one who received the message?”

I nodded, and he looked at Nora. “I need to speak with her alone.”

Nora immediately shook her head. “You can speak in front of me.”

The man studied her for a moment before looking back at me. “My name is Adrian Cross.”

The name meant nothing to me. “I do not know you.”

“I know.”

“Then why did you contact me?”

He sat down. “Because you deserve to know the truth.”

My stomach tightened. “What truth?”

Adrian placed a small envelope on the table, and I stared at it. “What is that?”

“Something Victor kept from you.”

I did not touch it at first. Nora looked at me and said quietly, “Open it.” I slowly reached for the envelope, my fingers shaking as I pulled out the papers inside. The first page contained Victor’s name, the second the name of his company, and the third made my entire body go cold, because my own name was written across the top.

I looked at Adrian. “What is this?”

“It is a business agreement.”

“I do not understand.”

“You were supposed to be part of a company Victor planned to build before you ever met him.”

Victor had always told me that he built his company alone, that I knew nothing about business, and that he wanted to protect me from the stress of it. I had believed him completely. Adrian continued, “Six years ago, Victor was not the successful man you know today.”

“I know that.”

“No. You know the story he told you.”

I looked at him carefully. “What are you saying?”

“Victor’s first major investment came from your family.”

My heart stopped. “My family?”

“Yes.”

I shook my head. “That cannot be true.”

“Your father gave Victor the money he needed to start his company.”

I stared at him. “Why would he do that?”

Adrian looked at me steadily. “Because Victor promised him something.”

“What?”

He hesitated, and then he said, “He promised that you would become his wife.”

The room seemed to disappear around me. I looked at Nora, who was staring at Adrian in disbelief. “That makes no sense,” I whispered.

Adrian’s expression remained serious. “You were never just Victor’s girlfriend.”

I swallowed hard. “What was I, then?”

His answer came quietly. “You were part of a deal.”

I stood up so quickly that the chair scraped behind me. “No.”

Adrian did not move. “I know this is difficult.”

“You do not know anything about me.”

“I know enough.”

I stared at him. “Then tell me why you know so much.”

For the first time, something changed in his expression, only for a second, but I saw it clearly. Regret. “I knew your father.”

My breath caught. “My father died five years ago.”

“I know.”

“How?”

Adrian looked at me for a long moment before answering. “Because I was there the night he asked Victor to protect you.”

My father’s death had always been painful, but it had never once seemed mysterious to me. I looked down at the papers again, thinking of everything at once. Victor had lied to me. My father had kept secrets from me. And a stranger named Adrian Cross seemed to know more about my past than I did myself.

I picked up the envelope. “Why are you telling me this now?”

Adrian stood. “Because Victor has realized you know nothing.”

My heart raced. “What does that mean?”

He looked directly into my eyes. “It means you are in more danger than you realize.”

Then he walked away, leaving me with the papers, the questions, and a terrible feeling that walking away from Victor had only opened the door to something much bigger than either of us.

  • The Woman I Became After You   The Man Who Saved Me

I barely slept that night. For years I had believed my life began with the choices I made as a woman. I thought the heartbreak, betrayal, and pain I experienced were the things that shaped me. Now I knew there had been a night before all of that, a night when a man named Daniel had carried me from a burning house and disappeared before I was old enough to remember his face.I sat beside the window until morning, and Adrian found me there.“You have been awake all night.”“I cannot stop thinking about Daniel.”He sat beside me. “You will find him.”“How can you be so sure?”“Because you have never stopped fighting for the people you love.”I looked at him. “What if he does not want to be found?”“Then we respect his choice.”I nodded. “But I still need to know why he saved me.”“Maybe you will find the answer when you find him.”When we arrived at my parents’ house, my father was already searching through his old records. “We found something,” he said, placing an old newspaper on the t

  • The Woman I Became After You   The Daughter Of The Man I Hated

I could not move. The letter remained in my hands, but I could no longer read the words in front of me. My mother’s real family name was Vale. Vale. The same name that had followed us through every secret. The same name that belonged to Edward Vale, the same man who had been connected to Daniel’s disappearance, my father’s disappearance, and the danger surrounding my family.I looked at my mother. “You are Edward Vale’s daughter?”She lowered her head. “Yes.”The word broke something inside me, and I stepped away from her. “Why did you never tell me?”“I was afraid.”“You were afraid of what?”“That you would hate me.”I stared at her. “How could you think I would hate you for something you did not choose?”“Because I knew what my father was capable of.” Her voice trembled. “I spent my entire life trying to escape him.”My father stepped toward me. “Your mother changed her name before I met her.”“Why?”“Because she was running from Edward.”I looked at my mother again. “Did he know y

  • The Woman I Became After You   The Night I Was Born

His face had changed the moment he read the message. Whatever was hidden beneath the old Marlowe estate was not simply another family secret. It was connected to the night I was born, and I knew from the silence in the room that my father was afraid of what I might discover.“What happened that night?” I asked. He looked at my mother before answering. “You were born during a terrible storm.”“That is not what I am asking.”“I know.”My mother reached for my hand. “Your birth was complicated,” she said softly. “You almost died.”I stared at her. “Why did nobody tell me?”“We did not want your childhood to be filled with fear.”I looked at my father. “And the room?”He lowered his eyes. “The room existed before you were born. Your grandfather used it to keep private documents and valuables.”“That still does not explain why my birth is connected to it.”My father remained silent. “Dad, I need the truth.”He finally looked at me. “On the night you were born, your mother and I were at the

The voice outside the storage unit made my entire body freeze. Adrian stepped closer to the door and placed himself between me and whoever was standing outside.“Who are you?” he asked. The man laughed softly. “You already know the answer.”I looked at Adrian. “Edward.”The man didn’t respond. Instead, the lights suddenly went out, and I grabbed Adrian’s arm.“Stay close to me,” he whispered. The darkness lasted only a few seconds before the emergency lights came on, but the door remained locked. Adrian examined it. “There has to be another exit.”I looked around the small room. “There.” At the back of the unit was a narrow ventilation opening large enough for someone to crawl through. Adrian pulled away the metal cover.“I will go first.”“No. We go together.”He looked at me and nodded, and we moved through the opening carefully into a narrow service passage. Behind us, I heard the storage unit door being opened. Someone had entered. We moved faster, and the passage led to another c

  • The Woman I Became After You   The Name I Could Not Ignore

I held the envelope tightly against my chest as Adrian drove away from Clara’s house. For several minutes neither of us spoke. The silence inside the car was heavy, but my mind was louder than anything either of us could say. Edward Vale. The name kept repeating in my thoughts. For years I had believed my family’s problems began with my grandfather. Then I discovered Richard Blackwell. After that came Victor, Jonathan, and the people who had helped hide the truth about my father’s disappearance. Now there was Edward Vale, a man who had remained hidden behind everyone else, a man who had controlled people without allowing his own name to appear, a man who knew about Daniel.I looked at Adrian. “Do you know anything about Edward Vale?”He kept his eyes on the road. “My father mentioned the name once.”“What did he say?”“He said Edward Vale was dangerous.”“Did he ever meet him?”“Yes.”My heart tightened. “When?”“Before I was born.”“Why did your father never tell you more?”“I think

  • The Woman I Became After You   The Woman Who Knew Everything

The next morning I woke up with one clear decision in my mind. We had to find my grandfather’s former secretary. According to my father, her name was Clara Bennett. She had worked for my grandfather for almost fifteen years and had been responsible for handling his private appointments, financial records, and personal correspondence. If anyone knew what had really happened to Daniel and Samuel, it was probably Clara.I called my father as soon as I finished getting dressed. “Dad, do you have any idea where Clara is?”There was silence on the other end. “I have been trying to find her for years.”“Then someone must know where she went.”“I have one old address.”“Send it to me.”He hesitated. “Are you sure you want to do this?”“Yes.”“Then take Adrian with you.”“I was already planning to.”A few minutes later, the address arrived. Clara was living in a small town several hours outside the city. I sent the information to Adrian, and he called almost immediately. “I am coming to get yo
