Chapter 2

Author: Ash Reverie
The attorney was taken aback. "Are you sure? Once the divorce is finalized, you and Ms. Bennett won't be legally married anymore."

That was exactly what Samuel wanted. "I'm sure. The moment time's up, we move forward with whatever needs to be done…"

Before he could get any further, the door swung open. Scarlett was back.

She was holding a bag of pastries. "Sam, I bought your favorite pastries… Was that the lawyer? Has he canceled the divorce filing?"

Samuel's back went rigid. He didn't want to risk anything going wrong, so he hung up and just nodded.

The next second, a pair of arms wrapped around him from behind in a tight hug. It should've felt warm and soft, but all he felt was a bone-deep chill.

"Darling, I'll never make you angry again. Let's not talk about divorce ever again, okay? You really scared me this time." Scarlett's voice was full of sincerity and tenderness, as if she truly loved him and was terrified of losing him.

Samuel forced down the trembling in his body. In his last life, he'd been utterly taken in by this fake affection. This time, he refused to be that stupid.

Scarlett didn't notice his silence. She cheerfully grabbed his hand and tugged him toward the door. "I booked your favorite restaurant. The timing's perfect if we leave now."

It was the same as his last life, so he wasn't surprised. He let her lead him out.

Out of nowhere, he remembered how she had learned to cook just for Julian. He stopped walking and tested the waters. "Scarlett, let's eat at home today. Will you cook for me?"

She paused, then turned back and said, perfectly naturally, "Darling, I don't know how to cook. You know that."

Did she really not know how to cook, or did she only cook for Julian?

Samuel lowered his gaze to hide the self-deprecation in his eyes and didn't call her out.

At the restaurant, halfway through the meal, Scarlett started texting nonstop, her brows knitting tighter and tighter. When Samuel glanced over, he saw the chat full of speech bubbles, all sent from her. The person on the other end was obviously Julian.

Seeing how restless she was reminded him of when they were still dating. Back then, they'd fought over something, and he'd sent her countless messages through the night without getting a single reply.

When he'd asked her about it the next day, she'd said, "Sam, you know it's kinda dumb to send that many messages, right? And it's really inefficient."

But now here she was, doing the very thing she used to call dumb. She was humbling herself to placate Julian. So she could do all that stupid stuff too, for the person she actually loved.

Samuel felt like his heart was caught in a fist. A dull, suffocating ache spread through his chest.

Suddenly, Scarlett looked up. "Sam, do you know what Julian likes?"

His eyes twitched. She'd been this blunt about it in his last life too, but he'd foolishly believed she only cared about Julian because of him.

His brief silence made her impatient, so she repeated the question. He finally answered, bitterness lacing his voice. "Watches…"

The moment she got her answer, Scarlett pushed back her chair and stood up. "Something came up at the office. I'm not coming home tonight."

She tossed that over her shoulder, then rushed out of the private room.

Scarlett had booked the restaurant to make it up to Samuel, but in the end, she left him sitting there alone.

He sat there in a daze for a while before picking up his spoon and mechanically shoveling food into his mouth. Everything tasted like cardboard.

Half an hour later, his phone buzzed incessantly. When he checked it, every message was from Julian.

"I was in the shower and didn't reply to my wife for like, half an hour, and she freaked out so much that she bombarded me with more messages than I can count.

"She even ditched an important client right away to rush back and cook my favorite dishes. She bought this watch, too. I heard there's only one like it in the world. Sam, don't you think she really loves me?"

In the photo was a meal Scarlett had cooked—something Samuel had never once tasted—and the watch he had just mentioned.

His grip tightened around his phone. After a long moment, he relaxed his fingers and lowered his head with a bitter smile.

In his last life, every time he got messages like this, he'd sincerely offered his blessings. Looking back now, he must've been nothing but a complete joke to Scarlett and Julian.

So this time, he didn't reply. He turned off his phone and walked out of the restaurant.

In ten days, he wouldn't have anything to do with the two of them ever again. This twisted mess of a relationship would finally come to an end.

Samuel had barely reached the side of the road when someone grabbed his hand. This time, he merely glanced at Scarlett, and she immediately let go. He stood silently until Scarlett could no longer bear the tension and was forced to speak first. "Sam, I'm sorry. I didn't know he'd come looking for you—" Samuel cut her off before she could say anything more. "Is there anything else you want to say? I'm in a hurry." His distant tone pierced Scarlett's heart like a sharp blade, leaving her struggling to catch her breath. When she spoke again, her voice was so hoarse that it was barely recognizable. Swallowing her pride, she made one final, desperate attempt to beg for another chance. "Sam, I really do love you. I truly can't live without you. Please, just give me one more chance. Just one, and I swear I'll cherish you and love you for the rest of my life." Samuel hadn't intended to say anything more, but hearing her promise to love him for the rest of her life struck him as d

Julian's demand caused Samuel's hand to freeze mid-motion as he lifted his coffee to drink. He lowered his head and let out a derisive laugh before setting the cup down and turning his gaze on Julian."Is that all you wanted to talk to me about? A woman?" Julian stiffened. He knew exactly what Samuel meant, but he stubbornly pretended not to understand. Julian said, "Scarlett doesn't love you anymore, and you know that. You don't love her either, do you? So why don't you just let me have her?" Seeing Julian play dumb, Samuel's expression darkened. He decided there was no point in beating around the bush anymore. He asked, "Julian, I've treated you pretty well all these years, haven't I? And this is how you repay me? You wreck my family, and now you're here picking a fight with me over a woman?" Samuel had expected Julian to feel ashamed, perhaps even offer an apology. Instead, a look of wounded indignation spread across Julian's face. Julian gripped his coffee cup so tight

Samuel let out a derisive laugh. "Really? What exactly was so great about me? My domineering attitude? Or the fact that I refused to let you control me?" With every single word he spoke, Scarlett's face grew paler. He had overheard her conversation with Savannah in the living room that morning, which meant he'd heard everything she'd said about him. There was no way she could deny it now. Those words had come straight from her own mouth, and the truth was that she'd really seen him that way once. When Scarlett fell silent, Samuel's expression turned icy, and his resolve hardened further. "You were the one who gave up on this relationship first, so what exactly are you trying to pull now? You and Julian are perfect for each other. You're both equally disgusting." Scarlett felt as though her heart were being torn apart, the pain so unbearable that she could barely remain standing. Her back hunched involuntarily under the weight of it all, leaving her looking utterly defeated.

As Samuel walked away, he thought he'd made himself perfectly clear and that Scarlett would finally stop bothering him. Yet once again, she managed to exceed his expectations of just how far she was willing to go. She stopped sending him gifts and started bringing him breakfast instead, specifically traditional breakfast dishes from their home country. Finding those foods abroad wasn't easy, yet somehow, she managed to come up with something different every day. It was obvious how much time and effort she had put into it. Still, Samuel wasn't the least bit touched. He found her gestures nothing but troublesome, especially since he now had to go out of his way to throw the food away. …That day, he had a business meeting to discuss a potential partnership. With Iris away on a business trip and everyone else at the company busy, he had no choice but to attend alone. As was often the case at business dinners, he was pressured to drink. Samuel didn't refuse, and when he was about

Scarlett stood at the entrance to his apartment building, holding a thermos food container. It was clear that she had been waiting there for him. She had been waiting for five hours, staying well past the time he usually got off work, yet Samuel still hadn't returned. Throughout the evening, she had even checked the temperature of the food several times to make sure the stew stayed warm. She had assumed Samuel was working overtime, never imagining that he had gone out to celebrate his birthday with Iris instead. As she watched him step out of Iris' car, a sudden wave of unease washed over her. A flicker of displeasure crossed her face, and her eyes darkened with jealousy. When Samuel saw her, he paused for only a moment before deciding to ignore her and continuing toward the entrance without breaking stride. The moment he passed her, Scarlett stepped in front of him and held out the thermos. Her face looked haggard, and she was dressed in simple, understated clothes. In a low

The police took one look at Scarlett, whose face was bruised and swollen and whose injuries were clearly more severe, then glanced at Iris, who had only a few bruises on the side of her face. Unsure of how to proceed, they found themselves in a dilemma. In the end, they turned to Samuel, who had witnessed the entire incident, and asked him to explain what had happened. Without the slightest hesitation, Samuel pointed at Scarlett and recounted exactly what he had seen. "She was the one who started it. I don't even know her. She just came up and grabbed me out of nowhere." Scarlett froze. She had never expected him to identify her so readily, much less distance himself from her so completely that he would claim not to even know her. As she stared at the man who had once been so familiar to her, now seeming like a complete stranger, she felt as though an enormous hand had closed around her heart, squeezing it so tightly that she could barely breathe. In the end, Scarlett was s
