Chapter 3

Author: Ash Reverie
Samuel started packing when he got home. He didn't plan to take a single thing Scarlett had given him—no accessories, no clothes, no watches. He didn't need them, and he sure as hell didn't want them anymore.

After he put all his important documents into the suitcase, a glint on his ring finger caught his eye. It was a pure, blood-red ruby ring, a symbol of blazing, everlasting love. To this day, Scarlett's words when she proposed remained vivid in his memory.

"Sam, marry me. I'll love you for the rest of my life, until the day I die."

But she hadn't loved him for a lifetime. She'd lied to him for a lifetime. She'd destroyed their love and treated his devotion like trash.

Without hesitation, Samuel tossed the ring he'd never taken off since the day he put it on straight into the trash. If she didn't love him, then he didn't want her anymore either.

Once everything was packed, Alex Bronson, Samuel's assistant, arrived. "Mr. Pierce, this is the birthday present I helped you buy for your cousin."

Samuel froze for a second, then remembered Julian's birthday was tomorrow. He glanced at the beautifully wrapped gift box, took it, and threw it into the trash.

Alex was taken aback. "Mr. Pierce, should I buy another one?"

Every year on Julian's birthday, Samuel always told Alex to prepare a gift. He'd never expected that all he would get in return was betrayal.

Suppressing the disgust churning in his chest, Samuel said, "Don't bother. You don't have to prepare anything from now on."

Alex was confused, but he could only accept the order and leave.

That night, just like she said, Scarlett didn't come home.

The next day, when Samuel arrived at his office, the first thing he did was call in his secretary, Greg Smith. "I'll handle the overseas market myself. Pull Larry off that assignment."

Greg didn't respond for a moment. Earlier, when everyone suggested Samuel handle the overseas market himself, he'd flat-out refused. Now, he'd changed his mind.

After another look from Samuel, Greg hurriedly nodded. "G-Got it, Mr. Pierce."

Before, Samuel had refused to go because he hadn't wanted to be separated from Scarlett. But now that reason was gone, and there was no point in staying.

Around noon, Julian texted again to remind him about his birthday party that night. Samuel ignored it as if he hadn't seen it. He had no intention of attending.

In the end, though, he still went because Scarlett showed up when he got off work. The moment he got into the car, she noticed his empty hands and asked in displeasure, "Where's your present? Julian's really looking forward to what you're giving him."

The fact that this was the first thing she noticed made Samuel let out a low, humorless laugh. "Is he, now?"

It was the first time he had spoken to her in that tone. She paused, thrown, something in her chest twisting uncomfortably, but she said nothing else.

When they arrived at the venue, Scarlett pulled a neatly wrapped gift box from the trunk and shoved it into Samuel's arms. She said, "Just say this is from you. It's Julian's birthday. Don't ruin his mood."

Samuel felt a bitter sting spread through his chest as he held the box. For the first time, he realized how far she was willing to go to cater to someone else's feelings.

Julian was waiting at the entrance in a sharp, tailored suit. The moment he saw them, his eyes lit up, and he hurried over. "Sam!"

When he reached them, Scarlett shot him a mock-chiding look. "You look way too handsome tonight. Try acting a little more dignified, would you?"

Julian looked a little embarrassed. "Scarlett…"

Samuel felt his heart being cut open as he watched them put on a show right in front of him.

Julian, oblivious, slung an arm around Samuel's shoulders and steered him inside, chattering happily. "Come on, Sam. Don't you think this place looks amazing?"

The banquet hall was done up in over-the-top luxury—opulent drapes, glittering chandeliers, and more fresh flowers than Samuel had ever seen in one place.

Julian's voice rang with pride. "My wife did all of this. I told her she didn't need to go so far, but she insisted. She said my birthday was a huge deal and that we had to have a grand celebration…"

Samuel's eyelashes trembled. In his last life, Scarlett had said those exact same words to him for 40 years. It turned out that nothing she'd given him had ever been one of a kind. He hadn't been special at all. He'd just been getting the leftovers.

The guests' whispers drifted clearly to his ears.

"Who on earth is Mr. Julian's wife? Even when Mr. Samuel had a birthday, Ms. Bennett never put on anything like this. I'm dying to know which big shot Mr. Julian married…"

Samuel instinctively glanced at Scarlett, only to see her lips curved in a soft smile, her eyes tender as she gazed at Julian.

That look was so obvious. How had he never caught it before?

Samuel had barely reached the side of the road when someone grabbed his hand. This time, he merely glanced at Scarlett, and she immediately let go. He stood silently until Scarlett could no longer bear the tension and was forced to speak first. "Sam, I'm sorry. I didn't know he'd come looking for you—" Samuel cut her off before she could say anything more. "Is there anything else you want to say? I'm in a hurry." His distant tone pierced Scarlett's heart like a sharp blade, leaving her struggling to catch her breath. When she spoke again, her voice was so hoarse that it was barely recognizable. Swallowing her pride, she made one final, desperate attempt to beg for another chance. "Sam, I really do love you. I truly can't live without you. Please, just give me one more chance. Just one, and I swear I'll cherish you and love you for the rest of my life." Samuel hadn't intended to say anything more, but hearing her promise to love him for the rest of her life struck him as d

Julian's demand caused Samuel's hand to freeze mid-motion as he lifted his coffee to drink. He lowered his head and let out a derisive laugh before setting the cup down and turning his gaze on Julian."Is that all you wanted to talk to me about? A woman?" Julian stiffened. He knew exactly what Samuel meant, but he stubbornly pretended not to understand. Julian said, "Scarlett doesn't love you anymore, and you know that. You don't love her either, do you? So why don't you just let me have her?" Seeing Julian play dumb, Samuel's expression darkened. He decided there was no point in beating around the bush anymore. He asked, "Julian, I've treated you pretty well all these years, haven't I? And this is how you repay me? You wreck my family, and now you're here picking a fight with me over a woman?" Samuel had expected Julian to feel ashamed, perhaps even offer an apology. Instead, a look of wounded indignation spread across Julian's face. Julian gripped his coffee cup so tight

Samuel let out a derisive laugh. "Really? What exactly was so great about me? My domineering attitude? Or the fact that I refused to let you control me?" With every single word he spoke, Scarlett's face grew paler. He had overheard her conversation with Savannah in the living room that morning, which meant he'd heard everything she'd said about him. There was no way she could deny it now. Those words had come straight from her own mouth, and the truth was that she'd really seen him that way once. When Scarlett fell silent, Samuel's expression turned icy, and his resolve hardened further. "You were the one who gave up on this relationship first, so what exactly are you trying to pull now? You and Julian are perfect for each other. You're both equally disgusting." Scarlett felt as though her heart were being torn apart, the pain so unbearable that she could barely remain standing. Her back hunched involuntarily under the weight of it all, leaving her looking utterly defeated.

As Samuel walked away, he thought he'd made himself perfectly clear and that Scarlett would finally stop bothering him. Yet once again, she managed to exceed his expectations of just how far she was willing to go. She stopped sending him gifts and started bringing him breakfast instead, specifically traditional breakfast dishes from their home country. Finding those foods abroad wasn't easy, yet somehow, she managed to come up with something different every day. It was obvious how much time and effort she had put into it. Still, Samuel wasn't the least bit touched. He found her gestures nothing but troublesome, especially since he now had to go out of his way to throw the food away. …That day, he had a business meeting to discuss a potential partnership. With Iris away on a business trip and everyone else at the company busy, he had no choice but to attend alone. As was often the case at business dinners, he was pressured to drink. Samuel didn't refuse, and when he was about

Scarlett stood at the entrance to his apartment building, holding a thermos food container. It was clear that she had been waiting there for him. She had been waiting for five hours, staying well past the time he usually got off work, yet Samuel still hadn't returned. Throughout the evening, she had even checked the temperature of the food several times to make sure the stew stayed warm. She had assumed Samuel was working overtime, never imagining that he had gone out to celebrate his birthday with Iris instead. As she watched him step out of Iris' car, a sudden wave of unease washed over her. A flicker of displeasure crossed her face, and her eyes darkened with jealousy. When Samuel saw her, he paused for only a moment before deciding to ignore her and continuing toward the entrance without breaking stride. The moment he passed her, Scarlett stepped in front of him and held out the thermos. Her face looked haggard, and she was dressed in simple, understated clothes. In a low

The police took one look at Scarlett, whose face was bruised and swollen and whose injuries were clearly more severe, then glanced at Iris, who had only a few bruises on the side of her face. Unsure of how to proceed, they found themselves in a dilemma. In the end, they turned to Samuel, who had witnessed the entire incident, and asked him to explain what had happened. Without the slightest hesitation, Samuel pointed at Scarlett and recounted exactly what he had seen. "She was the one who started it. I don't even know her. She just came up and grabbed me out of nowhere." Scarlett froze. She had never expected him to identify her so readily, much less distance himself from her so completely that he would claim not to even know her. As she stared at the man who had once been so familiar to her, now seeming like a complete stranger, she felt as though an enormous hand had closed around her heart, squeezing it so tightly that she could barely breathe. In the end, Scarlett was s
