Chapter 7

Author: Ash Reverie
Only when they got home did Scarlett notice all the bruises on Samuel. An ugly look crossed her face as she saw the blue and purple patches on his body. "What happened? Why are you so beat up?"

He shot her a mocking look, his bloodless lips parting slowly. "Remember Tim Ward, the guy you got revenge on before? He was in there, too."

That was enough for Scarlett to put two and two together. Her face filled with anger as she ground out, "So it was him. I let him walk away with his life last time. Looks like I didn't need to."

Scarlett's rage didn't ruffle Samuel at all. He just looked at her coolly and said, "If it weren't for you, I wouldn't have been locked up for two days. I wouldn't have had to go through this."

When he finished speaking, he turned and headed upstairs, leaving her standing there, frozen in place.

…

Only four days remained before the divorce was finalized. While Samuel stayed home to recover and prepare for his overseas project, Scarlett was always tied up. He knew that she was with Julian.

Just when he thought the next few days would pass in peace, one phone call shattered the quiet.

Greg sounded panicked. "Mr. Pierce, our cash flow just broke! We can't pay for inventory, and the factory has already shut down!"

Samuel's grip on his phone tightened. "What happened?"

Scarlett had always backed their funding chain. Nothing could have gone wrong on its own.

A beat later, Greg cleared up the confusion. "I asked Ms. Bennett's assistant. It seems that Mr. Julian wanted to open a clothing store, so Ms. Bennett pulled the funding chain to help him…"

For a second, Samuel's ears rang. His first reaction was sheer disbelief. Did a clothing store really need that much capital?

After hanging up on Greg, he immediately called Scarlett and got straight to the point. "You pulled the funding."

She paused, then said, "Julian wants to open a clothing store—"

He cut her off, his voice shaky. "Scarlett, you know damn well how important this company is to me. Why would you pull the funding without saying a single word? Does a clothing store really need that much money?"

She knew exactly what this company meant to him, yet she'd still yanked the entire funding chain without hesitation, tossing him straight into a bankruptcy crisis.

Once again, Samuel realized just how much Scarlett loved Julian—and how little she cared about him.

Her breath hitched at Samuel's words, and she didn't like it. Her voice turned cold and hard. "Your company will only be short on cash for a few days. It's not the end of the world. Once the clothing store's steady, I'll transfer it back."

The other end went silent after that. He called out urgently, "Scarlett? Scarlett!"

All he got in return was the harsh beep of a call that had been cut off.

For a normal company, running short on cash for a few days really wasn't a big deal. But Samuel's company had always been in the eye of the storm. Over the years, thanks to Scarlett's protection, many rivals had been jealous of him.

Now that he'd taken a hit, there would be no shortage of hungry wolves ready to tear him apart. Did Scarlett really not get that?

No. It wasn't that she didn't understand. It was just that Julian mattered more.

Samuel's chest tightened with bitter irony. He didn't waste a second; he immediately went to track down the new investors he'd started talking to recently.

Since he'd been reborn, he'd been working to find new funding because he didn't want to be tied to Scarlett anymore.

But when he arrived, he was told they wouldn't be meeting with him. Clearly, once they heard that Scarlett had pulled out, they didn't want to get involved in the mess either.

Over the next two days, Samuel barely slept. He ran all over town, knocking on door after door, begging for favor after favor. In the end, though, he still couldn't save the company.

When he finally signed the acquisition agreement, a crushing sense of defeat enveloped him. This company had been his life's work, and now, it was gone.

He went back to his office, packed his things into a cardboard box, and walked out of the building with it in his arms.

The moment he stepped out of the company, his lawyer called. "Mr. Pierce, everything has been processed and finalized. The divorce agreement is now officially in effect."

"Alright. Thank you."

Samuel had gotten what he wanted, but somehow, there was no real sense of relief.

When he got home, he grabbed his suitcase and headed straight for the airport. With 30 minutes left before boarding, he did something that hadn't been part of the plan.

He unlocked his phone and started a livestream. He'd originally planned to leave quietly, but since Scarlett hadn't spared him, he saw no reason to let her off.

"Bennett Group's CEO Cheats With Husband's Cousin"—he knew that headline would top the trending list the next day.

…

At that moment, Scarlett was with Julian when her assistant, Ashley White, called. "Ms. Bennett! Mr. Samuel is… He's streaming!"

Her brows furrowed. "What?"

"You… You should see for yourself, Ms. Bennett…" Ashley answered, her voice trembling.

Samuel had barely reached the side of the road when someone grabbed his hand. This time, he merely glanced at Scarlett, and she immediately let go. He stood silently until Scarlett could no longer bear the tension and was forced to speak first. "Sam, I'm sorry. I didn't know he'd come looking for you—" Samuel cut her off before she could say anything more. "Is there anything else you want to say? I'm in a hurry." His distant tone pierced Scarlett's heart like a sharp blade, leaving her struggling to catch her breath. When she spoke again, her voice was so hoarse that it was barely recognizable. Swallowing her pride, she made one final, desperate attempt to beg for another chance. "Sam, I really do love you. I truly can't live without you. Please, just give me one more chance. Just one, and I swear I'll cherish you and love you for the rest of my life." Samuel hadn't intended to say anything more, but hearing her promise to love him for the rest of her life struck him as d

Julian's demand caused Samuel's hand to freeze mid-motion as he lifted his coffee to drink. He lowered his head and let out a derisive laugh before setting the cup down and turning his gaze on Julian."Is that all you wanted to talk to me about? A woman?" Julian stiffened. He knew exactly what Samuel meant, but he stubbornly pretended not to understand. Julian said, "Scarlett doesn't love you anymore, and you know that. You don't love her either, do you? So why don't you just let me have her?" Seeing Julian play dumb, Samuel's expression darkened. He decided there was no point in beating around the bush anymore. He asked, "Julian, I've treated you pretty well all these years, haven't I? And this is how you repay me? You wreck my family, and now you're here picking a fight with me over a woman?" Samuel had expected Julian to feel ashamed, perhaps even offer an apology. Instead, a look of wounded indignation spread across Julian's face. Julian gripped his coffee cup so tight

Samuel let out a derisive laugh. "Really? What exactly was so great about me? My domineering attitude? Or the fact that I refused to let you control me?" With every single word he spoke, Scarlett's face grew paler. He had overheard her conversation with Savannah in the living room that morning, which meant he'd heard everything she'd said about him. There was no way she could deny it now. Those words had come straight from her own mouth, and the truth was that she'd really seen him that way once. When Scarlett fell silent, Samuel's expression turned icy, and his resolve hardened further. "You were the one who gave up on this relationship first, so what exactly are you trying to pull now? You and Julian are perfect for each other. You're both equally disgusting." Scarlett felt as though her heart were being torn apart, the pain so unbearable that she could barely remain standing. Her back hunched involuntarily under the weight of it all, leaving her looking utterly defeated.

As Samuel walked away, he thought he'd made himself perfectly clear and that Scarlett would finally stop bothering him. Yet once again, she managed to exceed his expectations of just how far she was willing to go. She stopped sending him gifts and started bringing him breakfast instead, specifically traditional breakfast dishes from their home country. Finding those foods abroad wasn't easy, yet somehow, she managed to come up with something different every day. It was obvious how much time and effort she had put into it. Still, Samuel wasn't the least bit touched. He found her gestures nothing but troublesome, especially since he now had to go out of his way to throw the food away. …That day, he had a business meeting to discuss a potential partnership. With Iris away on a business trip and everyone else at the company busy, he had no choice but to attend alone. As was often the case at business dinners, he was pressured to drink. Samuel didn't refuse, and when he was about

Scarlett stood at the entrance to his apartment building, holding a thermos food container. It was clear that she had been waiting there for him. She had been waiting for five hours, staying well past the time he usually got off work, yet Samuel still hadn't returned. Throughout the evening, she had even checked the temperature of the food several times to make sure the stew stayed warm. She had assumed Samuel was working overtime, never imagining that he had gone out to celebrate his birthday with Iris instead. As she watched him step out of Iris' car, a sudden wave of unease washed over her. A flicker of displeasure crossed her face, and her eyes darkened with jealousy. When Samuel saw her, he paused for only a moment before deciding to ignore her and continuing toward the entrance without breaking stride. The moment he passed her, Scarlett stepped in front of him and held out the thermos. Her face looked haggard, and she was dressed in simple, understated clothes. In a low

The police took one look at Scarlett, whose face was bruised and swollen and whose injuries were clearly more severe, then glanced at Iris, who had only a few bruises on the side of her face. Unsure of how to proceed, they found themselves in a dilemma. In the end, they turned to Samuel, who had witnessed the entire incident, and asked him to explain what had happened. Without the slightest hesitation, Samuel pointed at Scarlett and recounted exactly what he had seen. "She was the one who started it. I don't even know her. She just came up and grabbed me out of nowhere." Scarlett froze. She had never expected him to identify her so readily, much less distance himself from her so completely that he would claim not to even know her. As she stared at the man who had once been so familiar to her, now seeming like a complete stranger, she felt as though an enormous hand had closed around her heart, squeezing it so tightly that she could barely breathe. In the end, Scarlett was s
