We sat down to eat, and the food was delicious, but honestly, I barely tasted it.

I was too busy watching Serena.

The way she smiled when she talked. The way her eyes lit up when she laughed. The way she kept glancing at me like she was checking to make sure I was happy.

"Thank you," I said suddenly, interrupting her mid-sentence.

She blinked. "For what?"

"For this. For everything." I reached across the table and took her hand. "No one has ever done anything like this for me before."

"Really?" she asked, surprised. "But... your family..."

"My family doesn't celebrate birthdays," I said. "They never have. Birthdays were just... another day."

Sadness flickered across her face. "That's terrible."

I shrugged. "I'm used to it."

"Well, not anymore," she said firmly. "From now on, we're celebrating your birthday properly. Every year."

Every year.

She's planning to be here every year.

My heart nearly burst.

"I'd like that," I said softly.

She smiled and squeezed my hand.
