Chapter 4

مؤلف: Canal
The house was empty when my friend drove me home from the hospital.

"Mom?" I called out, but no one answered.

I plopped down on the couch. I took out my phone to call her, but no sooner had the screen lit up than a notification from my social media's "Near You" feature popped up.

"Famous Blogger Dean Sullivan Reveals His Best Friend's Mom's Dirty Secret!"

"Family Trait? A Homewrecker's Son Carries Out Her Legacy!"

Dean's profile picture lingered at the most obvious spot. He'd posted a long, vicious rant. "Some people are born with the need to take what belongs to others. He was my best friend, but who could've thought his mother was a homewrecker with a streak?

"It's no wonder he… Well, I'd hate to describe my best friend as such."

He'd attached evidence to the post, too, including screenshots of fabricated conversations, blurry images of bank transactions, and even a photo of a marriage certificate between my dad and someone else.

Denigrating remarks flooded the comment section.

"Holy crap, Dean has it rough! He's got a snake for a buddy."

"Like mother, like son. It's no wonder he clings to another man's girlfriend. I ran into Dean and his girlfriend the other day at an escape room, and the guy was hovering behind them, stalking them!"

"I say we expose the mother and son's home address!"

My blood ran cold, and my hand trembled even as it clutched the phone.

Years ago, Dad, Peter Huntley, threw a grand wedding and duped Mom into marrying him, but he'd always make up excuses to delay getting their marriage certificate.

It wasn't until his actual wife showed up one day with a marriage certificate that Mom realized she'd been made into a homewrecker. The actual wife had brought an entourage with her and caused a scene in the neighborhood, lifting banners and vandalizing Mom's house.

Mom broke down, and out of desperation, she swallowed an entire bottle of sleeping pills.

I guarded her bedside at the hospital day and night, nursing her back from death.

I'd only ever told one person about Mom's story. Aimee was the only one who knew about it.

Shaking all over, I called Aimee.

"Nathan, have you calmed down?"

"What's with the trending topic?" I demanded.

There was a beat of silence on the other line. "You smashed Dean's camera, and he wouldn't stop crying. I had no choice but to tell him Janice's story to cheer him up. I didn't expect him to put it online."

I hissed through gritted teeth, "Make him delete it."

Aimee sighed. "I'll say yes to anything you ask but that. Dean's a blogger. If he deletes the post, he may as well confess to making up rumors. Are you trying to ruin him?

"The topic will die off in a few days. Plus, people online will forget about it soon. As for Janice, everything's already in the past. She doesn't go on the Internet, and at her age, the post won't cause her any harm at all…"

I stopped listening to Aimee and hung up.

I made one frantic call after another to Mom, but her phone had been switched off. All I could think of was the hopeless look in her eyes before she swallowed all those sleeping pills years ago, and that was enough to make me break into a run toward the rooftop.

"Mom!" I got on my knees and reached for her. "Mom, get down from there, please! I'm begging you! Come down!"

Mom shook her head, a bitter smile curving her mouth. "Even when I'm gone, you'll still have Aimee. She makes mistakes sometimes, but I know she truly loves you. She'll take good care of you, Nathan."

"No, that's not true!" I screamed, agony and desperation edging my voice. "Aimee's the one behind all this! She doesn't love me. She only cares about Dean!"

Upon hearing this, Mom froze. Her moment of hesitation was all I needed to lunge forward and pull her into safety.

Mom pulled me into a tight embrace, sobbing, "My poor Nathan! I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry I misjudged Aimee!"

I buried my face in the crook of her neck. "Let's get out of here, Mom."

When we got home, I packed all our documents and essentials in a suitcase as fast as possible. Then, I hailed a cab to take us to the airport.

From now on, Aimee wouldn't be on any of the paths I took.

I took a fresh napkin and laid it flat before Erin. "Could you draw the map again, Dr. Anders? I'm afraid dirt got on the first one."Aimee's voice trembled. "What did you just say, Nathan?"I lifted my gaze to her face. "I said, you got dirt on my map.""I was the only one who'd show you how to get to places back in the day," she hissed."Yeah, and you showed me how to get to a dead end. If I'd followed the map you gave me, I would've lost the other leg."All the blood drained from Aimee's face.Erin picked up her pen again and drew the same red flags from the old map on the new napkin."All done. See you this weekend!" She stood up and slid the napkin toward me.I carefully folded the napkin and put it in my pocket. "See you."Aimee didn't leave and waited until I'd wrapped up my shift that night. Her eyes were bloodshot as she said, "We've known each other for 20 years, Nathan. 20 whole years! I was your whole life between the ages of six and 26!"She pointed at herself, h

For the next half of the month, an expensive phantom haunted the streets of Leardon.I went to the neighborhood supermarket to grab a frozen pizza, only for the cashier to hand me a bag containing the pizza I'd wanted. "Mr. Huntley, the lady with the glasses outside has paid for this."I followed the cashier's gaze and saw Aimee standing outside the floor-to-ceiling window, staring at me through the glass. I immediately slid the bag back to the cashier. "Void the sale now. I'll pay it with my card."The card-reading machine beeped as my payment went through, and I left the supermarket with the repacked frozen pizza. Aimee greeted me immediately and tried to take the plastic carrier bag from me. "Let me help you with the bag. It's heavy."I dodged to the side, avoiding her hand. "Stop feeling so self-important, Aimee."Her hand hung in midair, and her chest rose and fell rapidly. "I'm only trying to do something for you."I studied her face, which was pale from all her late nigh

The rain in Leardon stopped.Aimee had played two trump cards consecutively. First, she ruined Dean, and second, she destroyed Dad's family and business. However, I had blocked her number in return.Things were not going as she'd planned. From what she knew about me, I was supposed to be the loser who couldn't survive without her. I should have been crying and begging her to take me home after I'd gotten her gifts."Your red wine, Ms. Thornton." The waiter set the glass of red wine before her.Aimee picked up the glass by its stem but didn't drink the wine. The scene from the cafe yesterday played through her mind. She remembered the cool indifference in my eyes when I'd told her the price of the black coffee. There had been neither resentment nor disgruntlement in my eyes, only a calm look that one might give a stranger. It made her feel an unprecedented sense of panic.Just then, there was a commotion at the restaurant entrance. A man in a khaki coat shoved the waiters aside an

I returned to the apartment after my shift to the sound of an argument at the stairwell. I hurried up the steps, only to find Aimee standing outside my apartment door with an ornate box of tonics in hand.Mom stood at the door like a steadfast guardian, holding up a broomstick."Janice, these tonics are great for your immune system, especially given how cold and damp Leardon is. Nathan might not know any better, but you can't let this farce continue! Don't you feel bad seeing him struggle here?"She was trying to find a breakthrough with Mom. As far as Aimee was concerned, all she had to do was get Mom on her side, and I'd be cornered. After all, Mom had once trusted her without question."Shut up!" Mom's voice trembled with rage. "How dare you show your face around here, Aimee? Did you ever consider how my heart would break for Nathan when you let Dean make up all those rumors?"Impatience colored Aimee's tone as she countered, "I've already sorted out that mess, Janice, and Dean

I found part-time work at a cafe near the apartment.I was wiping down the coffee machine when the bell above the door chimed, the sound crisp and clear."One black coffee, please. No sugar," an extremely familiar, gentle, yet firm female voice rang out from the other side of the counter. My hand paused, and I lifted my head.Aimee sighed, sounding exasperated. "You really know how to make a woman go around looking for you, Nathan."I set the rag down and hit a few keys on the cash register. "That'll be 16.50 Leardonian dollars. Cash or card?""Are you going to keep this up just to prove a point, Nathan?" Aimee pressed softly, as if coaxing a child who'd run away from home in a fit of anger. "You couldn't even keep up with the roads back home, and yet you've come all this way to Leardon to bus tables?"Quite a price to pay just to spite me, don't you think?"I picked up the card swiper. "You're holding up a line. Please make room for the customers at the back if you're not buyi

Mom and I rented an old apartment in Zone 2 of Leardon.I stood at the corner of the street with a printed map in hand. There were no hand-drawn arrows or cute smiley faces on this map, only landmarks written in Leardonian that meant little to nothing to me.I had Mom hail a cab home so I could make my way back alone."Maybe you should get a cab home, too, Nathan," Mom suggested, feeling bad for me."No." I stared at the red mailbox in the distance. "I can find my way around."That first week, I'd turned onto the wrong street. The sky suddenly opened up and gave way to a torrential downpour. Icy rainwater soaked through my sweater in no time.In the past, Aimee would always wait for me at the school gates with an umbrella. She'd lecture me, but her umbrella would always tip over my head and keep me dry from the rain.I headed into a convenience store by the street. Umbrellas of various colors lined the shelf."One black umbrella, please." I handed the cash to the blond shopkeep
