Chapter 1

I didn't dare waste even a second and immediately rushed to the hospital.

As I hurried there, I repeatedly called Ethan Alvarez, trying to tell him that the injured man was his father, but he kept hanging up on me.

It was obvious that he was preparing to board the plane with Mia Reed.

The doctor walked out of the emergency room with a worried expression.

"The patient's lower limbs were crushed, and he's suffered massive blood loss. Surgery is required immediately. As you're not a legal family member, please contact his relatives and have them come here as soon as possible."

Wiping the sweat from my forehead, I dialed Ethan's number again. This time, he finally answered.

"Ethan, get to the hospital right now! The person Mia hit is—"

He interrupted me before I could finish, his voice filled with impatience.

"Wasn't five hundred thousand dollars enough? Mia already explained it was an accident. Besides, your father wasn't seriously injured. On the contrary, she was badly frightened, and I need to stay with her."

"At the end of the day, this was your father's fault. The Alvarez family is well-known in Enotria, and my mother never invites strangers to our events. He didn't have an invitation but insisted on attending our engagement party. That's why this accident happened!"

I was furious.

"Ethan, the person lying in the hospital is your—"

"Celeste, you need to watch yourself. We're not married yet, so I have no obligation to take care of your father.

"If this accident hadn't happened, I never would've known that you and your father are exactly the same, with no sense of etiquette or boundaries. Your family should be thanking Mia for teaching you some manners!"

There was not only anger in his raised voice, but arrogance as well.

I was trembling with rage, yet at that moment, a sharp series of beeping sounds came from the emergency room. It was the monitor's critical-condition alarm.

Suppressing both my anger and the tremor in my voice, I said, "Ethan, I'll say this one more time. The person being resuscitated is your father! Get to the hospital now, or you'll regret it!"

There was silence on the other end of the line for several seconds before Ethan let out a cold laugh.

"I finally understand your little game. You're jealous and resentful, so now you're cursing my father and trying to trick me into canceling my trip with Mia. That's not going to happen!

"I'm boarding now. Stop calling me. Otherwise, I'll cancel our engagement!"

Before I could say anything else, he hung up.

Dad was furious.

"He suddenly canceled the ceremony. Now his father is in critical condition, yet he still refuses to show up. Ethan is a complete b*st*rd! If you hadn't wanted to expand our family's influence in Enotria, I would've never agreed to this marriage alliance."

That was true.

The reason I had agreed to the alliance was because Ethan was the only marriageable heir in the Alvarez family, and he wasn't bad-looking either.

As someone born into a secondary line of the family, he had no idea how much influence the McKenna family held in Lanford. He genuinely believed we were nothing more than ordinary nouveau riche.

That was why, when he thought the elderly man Mia had hit was my dad, he didn't even hesitate and simply tried to settle the matter with money.

Even after learning that the victim's condition was critical, all he cared about was Mia. He wasn't willing to spare even a little time to come to the hospital.

To him, this marriage was nothing more than a task assigned by his family.

He had never considered my dad and me to be his family.

"Cancel the engagement! As the don of the McKenna family, there's no way I'll allow my precious daughter to marry a man like that. Cancel it immediately!"

"I agree."

I nodded and supported my dad's decision.

Just then, a piercing alarm sounded from inside the operating room, followed by the doctor's shout.

"Sh*t! His blood pressure is dropping! He's gone into cardiac arrest! Prepare for resuscitation!"

The doctors and nurses immediately fell into chaos, and less than a minute later, a nurse pushed open the door and sighed at us.

"The patient's heart has stopped beating and has been pronounced dead."

It was already too late.

I looked at him and let out a cold laugh."You love me? So what were you doing when you thought Mia had killed my father?""No!" He shook his head frantically as tears spilled from his eyes."I know that before you revealed your identity, everyone thought Mia and I were together!"But I only ever treated her like a sister! When she hit your father with her car, I thought it was an accident, so I wanted to protect her. I wanted all of us to become one family!"Please believe me! Give me one more chance, okay? I've already lost my father. I can't lose you too..."Still on his knees, he crawled toward me and tried to grab the hem of my dress.I forcefully shook him off."What a pity."With a sneer, I took a check out of my handbag. The amount written on it was six hundred thousand dollars.I handed it to him."This is the only thing I can do for you. After all, in your eyes, a dead father is only worth six hundred thousand dollars."Ethan froze, and a tear fell from his eye.

"It was you! You deliberately killed my father!"Ethan's entire body trembled violently as though a heavy blow had struck him, and he stared at the screen with bloodshot eyes.He suddenly turned around, grabbed Mia by the throat, and roared at her in agony."Why? Why did you do this?!"With tears streaming down her face, Mia tilted her head and revealed a twisted smile."Because I love you, Ethan!"I couldn't stand it! Why should the daughter of a nobody get to marry you? Does she deserve it?"I only wanted to teach her a lesson. How was I supposed to know that was your father? If you want to blame someone, blame yourself! If you had introduced me to your father earlier, I wouldn't have mistaken him for someone else and hit the wrong person!""Shut up!"Ethan let out a furious roar and tightened both hands around Mia's neck as if he wanted to tear her head off. However, someone hated Mia even more than he did then."You b*tch! You killed my husband!"With a shrill scream, D

An ambulance screeched to a stop in front of the estate gates.A doctor in a white coat stepped out and shouted, "Don Alvarez's body has not been claimed, so we had no choice but to bring him here!"Quick, who is going to claim the body?"The doors of the ambulance opened, and the mixed smell of disinfectant and blood drifted out.A body covered with a white sheet was wheeled down. One corner of the sheet slipped aside, revealing the elderly man's pale face, and below that, his severed lower body. The sight was horrifying."Dad!"A devastated Ethan broke free from his restraints and stumbled toward the body."What happened? How did this happen? How could my father have suddenly died?!"Mia shrank back to one side, her face pale as she trembled uncontrollably."Wasn't he Celeste's father? How did he become Ethan's father?"Those words hit Ethan like a hammer and snapped him awake. His eyes were red as he stared at Mia."You killed my father?!"After the accident, didn't y

"This is outrageous! You're quite bold for an actor!"Ethan frowned in displeasure.Mia immediately ran to his side and hid behind him.Her pitiful appearance completely enraged Ethan. Pointing at my dad, he shouted, "Go ahead and keep up the acting!"You think putting on designer clothes and wearing a big gold ring makes you a don? You've really started believing you're someone important, haven't you? "Have you become addicted to acting?"Diana impatiently waved her hand. "Men, throw this guy out!"Several Alvarez family subordinates immediately rushed forward and surrounded Dad and me."What a joke!"Dad let out a cold laugh and lightly snapped his fingers. In an instant, dozens of men emerged from all around the estate and forced the men surrounding us to the ground. The situation reversed immediately.Ethan was also pinned to the ground and unable to move."Let me go! Do you know who I am?"Ethan roared as two large men firmly restrained his arms, causing him to ba

Ethan frowned deeply, and the slight tremble in his body revealed his unease.Seeing this, Mia immediately wrapped her arm around his and softly comforted him."Relax, Ethan. Your father is probably delayed and still on the plane. Long flights are exhausting, and even after landing, he'd probably be resting in the VIP lounge."Celeste probably knows that, which is why she's deliberately lying to scare you."Ethan was quickly convinced. The tension in his expression eased considerably, and he looked gratefully at Mia."Mia, you're so thoughtful. You're the only person who genuinely cares about my father."Then he glared at me and spoke with obvious impatience."As for you, Celeste, you've used my father's safety to make jokes again and again. I'm warning you to apologize to my father, or I'll call off our engagement."He spoke viciously, using the engagement as a threat against me.What he didn't know was that those words no longer had any effect on me.Everything he had done

"What?! My father is dead?!"Ethan froze, and his phone slipped from his hand onto the ground."How is that possible? Wasn't he supposed to be on a flight to Lanford? How could something have happened to him?!"Mia immediately picked up the phone for him before sweeping her gaze across my dad and me. Then she pouted aggrievedly."Ms. McKenna, even if you hate me for ruining your engagement party, you can't hire people to play these kinds of pranks.""Just to make Ethan pay attention to you, you not only found someone to pretend to be calling from the hospital, but you even found an actor to pretend to be your dad. You've really gone to great lengths!"Ethan looked at me, his face filled with disappointment and disgust."An act?""I didn't do any of that, nor do I need to."I met his gaze directly, but all I saw in his eyes was contempt."Celeste, how many times are you going to tell the same lie?!"Wasn't it just an accident? Why do you keep refusing to let Mia go?"My fath
