Chapter 2

Author: Brooke Chase
The morning greeted me with an Instagram post.

[Does anyone know this couple? They dropped their camera.]

The photos were of Drake and Daphne. Some showed them standing together on the beach, their shoulders touching. Others were portraits they had clearly taken of each other. It was obvious they had enjoyed themselves.

[Not the point, but couple goals?]

[Don't even know them, but ladies, get you a man who looks at you like that!]

…

The comment section was already overflowing with praise.

With a quick tap, I shared the entire post with Daphne.

She called me within seconds. "Okay, you're not seriously believing what the comment section says, right? They're just pictures. We were literally posing for the camera."

I heard Drake chuckle in the background. "Okay, hear me out. The Internet detected the vibe, right? I have to agree with them. Daphne and I make quite a match!"

He snatched the phone from her and added, "Hey, man. Don't get insecure about all this. I'm not into her at all. She's way too manly for me, ha!

"She did tell me she's gonna quit smoking for my sake, though. I honestly can't imagine how you've managed to kiss her without choking on all that nicotine. Blergh."

"Not important," I sneered. "I want the camera back. It was a gift to my mom from her mother."

I ended the call and looked at the open folder on my table. The forms and documents I'd prepared to continue my education were still there. I'd given up on that dream because I loved Daphne enough to marry her, even if my education was the price I had to pay.

Now, I wanted back what I'd lost.

…

A few days later, it was Daphne's mother's birthday.

I arrived at her house early, dropped off a gift, and was about to leave when I ran into Daphne, who had just returned.

She shoved a crudely carved wooden doll into my hand.

"Look what I got you! I searched all over the woods under the blazing sun to find the right block of wood. Then I carved it into the doll you're holding now!" she chirped. "Nothing could be more memorable than this!"

Drake was there too. He'd been lounging on the couch with his eyes glued to his phone, but the conversation caught his attention.

He poked his head up and chimed in, "Pfft. Drilling holes into those wooden blocks messed up my finger. Not recommended. But at least Daphne got me this watch as an apology!"

He showed me the supposed "damage" to his finger. The mark was smaller than the eye of a needle. The watch, however, was impossible to ignore.

Daphne had only ever given me things she'd made herself, like a hand-painted T-shirt or a glazed clay mug. Every one of them looked shoddy, hideous, in fact, in the unmistakable way that came from someone who was simply winging it.

Yet when it came to Drake, her gifts were always expensive. It had gotten to the point where I'd once demanded to know whether she'd actually fallen in love with him.

"Ew, gross! Who would even like that guy? I only started giving him gifts as an extension of your goodwill, Tim! He's your homie, right? Your best bro since you were kids? If it weren't for that, I wouldn't even look at him!"

She'd taken my hand then and looked me straight in the eyes. "The gifts I give you come from the heart, bae. You can't buy them anywhere, and that's what makes them valuable and unique. They exist only for you."

I snickered to myself. I couldn't believe I'd actually bought that back then.

"Hey, man. Your camera!" Drake pulled it from his bag and tossed it toward me. "Catch!"

He was too far away for me to catch it in time. Naturally, the camera slammed into the floor and broke.

"Dude?! What gives? I told you to catch it, right?" Drake complained.

"Oh, quit it. Old things break eventually anyway. It was pretty hard to use, too. No harm done," Daphne interjected before I could even muster a reply.

She pushed me toward the kitchen. "I'm still recovering from the trip, so I'm afraid you're on kitchen duty today, dear sir!"

She handed me a list. "These are Drake's favorite foods. I think you should make something he likes as a reward for taking care of me in your place, you know?"

Out of respect for her mother, I held my tongue and prepared the meal.

Once everything was ready, Drake took a seat right beside Daphne and started chatting with her family as though he'd known them for years.

That was when I realized there wasn't a place for me at the table.

"Oh, sorry about that. We have more guests than we expected, huh?" Daphne said as she took my hand. "You can always eat in the kitchen! There's plenty of space in there."

Drake made a show of getting to his feet. "No! You're making him sound like the hired help! He should take my seat instead."

Daphne pressed a hand against his thigh to stop him. "You're a guest, and guests eat at the table. Don't worry about him, okay? He's not picky about stuff like that. He gets it!"

"Tim? You should probably come to the hospital entrance," Nora suddenly said, pulling me away from my work.I had been on edge lately, plagued by the feeling that something bad was about to happen.Drake and Daphne were there.Daphne, for her part, looked terrible despite the fact that I hadn't seen her in only a few days. She seemed to have lost a lot of weight. Her clothes hung loosely from her body, as if they might fall off at any moment. She glared at Drake. "Livestream. Now."Tens of thousands of people flooded into his livestream almost instantly. They were all his supporters. Comments such as [We will always support you, Drake!] and [Justice will be served to the man who breaks up other people's families!] raced across the screen.Unfortunately for Drake, his opening words shocked everyone. "I was the third party who came between them. I lied."[Are you being held hostage? Blink twice if you are!][Don't give in to the abuser!]Daphne snatched his phone away and pointe

I returned to my ward.Nora had already laid out my meal for the day."Welcome back! I've prepared your favorite food." She turned toward the door, took one look at my face, and frowned. "Hey, what's with the long face?"I told her about Daphne's stay."Well, a hospital can't legally kick a patient out, but I'll come up with something," she replied. "You should focus on eating."And she did come up with something. She spoke to the hospital administration and arranged for Daphne to be transferred to another branch far from here.Even as they took her to the ambulance, she thrashed around and swung her fists, injuring two nurses."Tim! Tim, I won't give up! I won't let you go!" she screamed loudly enough for me to hear her from my window.Annoyed, I shut the window to block out the noise.…The late-afternoon sun was beautiful, so I went for a walk in the hospital garden.I hadn't gone far when Drake suddenly appeared and blocked my path."Daphne's not here. Where is she? Wha

Thanks to Nora's recommendation, my mother and I eventually landed rooms in the VIP ward. It was a very nice hospital: clean, quiet, and private enough that we no longer had to put up with crowds or unwanted visitors.I'd also recently received acceptance letters from six different colleges abroad. I was overjoyed, and my appetite showed it."Someone's in a pretty good mood today," Nora said when she saw me."I'm about to study abroad." I sighed. "But Mom's still sick. I'm worried no one's gonna be able to take care of her while I'm gone.""You could always take her with you." Nora fell silent for a moment before she added solemnly, "Would you like to stay with me out there?"She paused, then continued, "Over the years, I've never dated anyone or met a guy I was romantically interested in. It wasn't until I saw you again that I finally understood why. I've never stopped pining for you."I was stunned. I hadn't expected her to suddenly confess her feelings for me like this. I even

Now that Daphne was home, she realized just how uneasy she truly felt.Tim's apathy and distance, coupled with the new woman who had started showing up around him, left her a strong sense of crisis.Tim had always been incredibly brilliant and capable, which made him highly desirable to plenty of women.Daphne had worked hard to win his heart and finally get him to return her feelings.Drake had followed her inside. She looked up at him and snapped, "What are you doing here?""We're married now, remember? This is my home too," he said."Have you lost your marbles? Drake, this is Tim's and my bedroom!" she shot back. "I only went through with that whole marriage license debacle to piss him off so he'd come back to me! We need to find time to get a divorce."Daphne stepped into the bathroom. She had been in the hospital for two days, and she stank.Only then did she realize that Tim's belongings were gone—his bathrobe, his grooming products, everything. She rushed back out and y

Whatever faint thread of consciousness sustained me gradually gave way to complete darkness. When I finally opened my eyes, Daphne was sitting by my bedside.I immediately pressed the call button to summon a nurse. "Excuse me! Can someone please get this trespasser out of my ward? I'd very much appreciate never seeing her in here again!"Daphne stirred and tried to move closer. "Hush, Tim! We can set aside whatever issues and misunderstandings we have, can't we? For now, just let me take care of you...""No! I don't wanna see your face!" I snapped. The force of my emotions sent me into a violent coughing fit, and the nurse stepped in to escort Daphne away.A few hours later, I was able to walk again. I slowly made my way to my mother's ward. She was already awake, with only mild complications."I heard about everything, Timmy. You've been through so much, haven't you?" she said as she patted my head. "Fortunately, Nora's been such a darling these past two days. She's taken care

Daphne and Drake showed up in my hospital room early the next morning. She was still wearing the same clothes she'd had on when I last saw her yesterday, and when she came close, I caught the scent of Drake's cologne on her. They had been together all night."Tim, do you remember? Today's the day we get our marriage license!" she announced."W-What? But my mom hasn't even woken up yet!""Come on, man. Can you not do your argumentative schtick right now? Today's the day, Tim! It was tough enough scheduling this. You can't just say no and bail on something this important," Drake interjected once again, despite no one asking for his opinion.I was nearly hysterical. "How long are you two going to keep playing dumb?! This has nothing to do with me, and you both know it! You 'accidentally' put Drake's name down as the groom again, didn't you, Daphne? How many times did you think you could pull this stunt?!"Daphne's frown deepened. She checked the app on her phone, then froze in shock
