Chapter 3

Author: Brooke Chase
I took my plate to the kitchen and dumped everything into the trash, then tossed the wooden doll on top of the heap.

I turned around just in time for Drake to shove a big slice of cake into my face.

"Tim! Why did you turn around?!" he cried with false concern as he tried to wipe my face with a dirty kitchen rag.

"Fuck off!" I snapped, shoving his hand away before feeling my way toward the faucet.

The commotion was loud enough to bring Daphne rushing into the kitchen.

Drake immediately launched into his version of events. "I was trying to hand him his share of the cake, but he bumped right into it and blamed me."

Daphne grabbed me angrily. "Apologize to him. Now!"

"What?! I didn't do anything wrong!" I protested, my eyes darting between the two of them.

My childhood best friend and the woman I had once loved above all else stood right in front of me, yet neither of them remembered that I was allergic to cream.

I tore myself free of her grip and stormed toward the front door, determined to leave.

Two minutes later, however, I came rushing back into Daphne's house.

"Daphne, can you please give me a ride to the hospital?! I didn't drive here, and my mom just fainted!" I pleaded, my hand trembling.

I was short of breath, and I couldn't even tell whether it was from the allergy or the panic.

Daphne's parents lived in the suburbs, and at this hour, there was no chance of getting an Uber.

Daphne didn't share my urgency at all.

"Sure. Apologize to Drake, and I'll drive you," she said calmly.

I turned toward Drake. He was busy recounting his pitiful tale of being bullied to the unsuspecting crowd, even though I was the one who had been mistreated.

My mom's emergency was too important to let this petty drama hold me up, so I quickly walked over to him. "I'm sorry."

"Oh, Tim. How could I possibly be angry at you? We go way back, man! I was only upset that you cursed at me. It really hurt..."

I didn't wait for him to finish yammering. I grabbed Daphne and pulled her out the door toward her car.

The drive was chillingly quiet until she finally spoke. "Listen, I only made you apologize because I know how much this friendship means to both of you. You and Drake have been bros for more than two decades! I don't wanna see you figh—"

"Just focus on the road."

A few minutes later, Drake called.

"Daphne! Daphne! I..." He hesitated. "I didn't wanna bother you, but I... don't have any other friends I can ask for help. Uh... You remember that time you fell down the stairs and I caught you before you tumbled all the way down? I twisted my ankle doing that, and it's getting worse. I can't drive at all!"

The car immediately screeched to a halt.

My head slammed against the windshield.

Daphne got out, came around to my side, yanked open the door, and dragged me out. "Sorry, but you'll have to get to the hospital on your own. Drake's been drinking, and now his twisted ankle is acting up. At the very least, I need to drive him home safely."

Panic surged through me. "B-But my mom..."

Daphne was already back in the driver's seat. She sped away and left me in the dust.

I watched her taillights disappear into the distance.

I had no idea where I was. There wasn't even any cell service. The weak glow of my phone screen was my only source of light; everything around me was almost pitch-black.

Terror seized me.

When I was a child, my parents used to punish me by locking me in the basement. The experience had left a traumatic scar that still haunted me as an adult, and now every hair on my body stood on end.

Daphne had forgotten about my fear of the dark, too.

Back when things were good between us, she had installed automatic night-lights in almost every corner of the house. She even kept a stash of candles and matches just in case, determined to make sure I was never left without light.

Now, that light shone on someone else.

I started running along the road, desperate to reach the freeway.

Half an hour later, a driver finally stopped and offered me a ride to the hospital.

…

When I arrived, the doctor told me, "The patient suffered a sudden cerebral hemorrhage. Her condition is critical. We're doing everything we can to save her."

That was all I heard. Then the world went dark.

…

Dawn had barely broken when I finally opened my eyes.

The doctor told me I had suddenly fallen into a coma because of my allergic reaction. If I had gone without medical attention for even a few more minutes, my life could have been in danger.

Fortunately, that wasn't the only good news I received that day.

My mother's operation had been successful. She had survived.

Words couldn't express my relief. I didn't think I could ever forgive myself if I failed to be by her side when she needed me most.

"Tim? You should probably come to the hospital entrance," Nora suddenly said, pulling me away from my work.I had been on edge lately, plagued by the feeling that something bad was about to happen.Drake and Daphne were there.Daphne, for her part, looked terrible despite the fact that I hadn't seen her in only a few days. She seemed to have lost a lot of weight. Her clothes hung loosely from her body, as if they might fall off at any moment. She glared at Drake. "Livestream. Now."Tens of thousands of people flooded into his livestream almost instantly. They were all his supporters. Comments such as [We will always support you, Drake!] and [Justice will be served to the man who breaks up other people's families!] raced across the screen.Unfortunately for Drake, his opening words shocked everyone. "I was the third party who came between them. I lied."[Are you being held hostage? Blink twice if you are!][Don't give in to the abuser!]Daphne snatched his phone away and pointe

I returned to my ward.Nora had already laid out my meal for the day."Welcome back! I've prepared your favorite food." She turned toward the door, took one look at my face, and frowned. "Hey, what's with the long face?"I told her about Daphne's stay."Well, a hospital can't legally kick a patient out, but I'll come up with something," she replied. "You should focus on eating."And she did come up with something. She spoke to the hospital administration and arranged for Daphne to be transferred to another branch far from here.Even as they took her to the ambulance, she thrashed around and swung her fists, injuring two nurses."Tim! Tim, I won't give up! I won't let you go!" she screamed loudly enough for me to hear her from my window.Annoyed, I shut the window to block out the noise.…The late-afternoon sun was beautiful, so I went for a walk in the hospital garden.I hadn't gone far when Drake suddenly appeared and blocked my path."Daphne's not here. Where is she? Wha

Thanks to Nora's recommendation, my mother and I eventually landed rooms in the VIP ward. It was a very nice hospital: clean, quiet, and private enough that we no longer had to put up with crowds or unwanted visitors.I'd also recently received acceptance letters from six different colleges abroad. I was overjoyed, and my appetite showed it."Someone's in a pretty good mood today," Nora said when she saw me."I'm about to study abroad." I sighed. "But Mom's still sick. I'm worried no one's gonna be able to take care of her while I'm gone.""You could always take her with you." Nora fell silent for a moment before she added solemnly, "Would you like to stay with me out there?"She paused, then continued, "Over the years, I've never dated anyone or met a guy I was romantically interested in. It wasn't until I saw you again that I finally understood why. I've never stopped pining for you."I was stunned. I hadn't expected her to suddenly confess her feelings for me like this. I even

Now that Daphne was home, she realized just how uneasy she truly felt.Tim's apathy and distance, coupled with the new woman who had started showing up around him, left her a strong sense of crisis.Tim had always been incredibly brilliant and capable, which made him highly desirable to plenty of women.Daphne had worked hard to win his heart and finally get him to return her feelings.Drake had followed her inside. She looked up at him and snapped, "What are you doing here?""We're married now, remember? This is my home too," he said."Have you lost your marbles? Drake, this is Tim's and my bedroom!" she shot back. "I only went through with that whole marriage license debacle to piss him off so he'd come back to me! We need to find time to get a divorce."Daphne stepped into the bathroom. She had been in the hospital for two days, and she stank.Only then did she realize that Tim's belongings were gone—his bathrobe, his grooming products, everything. She rushed back out and y

Whatever faint thread of consciousness sustained me gradually gave way to complete darkness. When I finally opened my eyes, Daphne was sitting by my bedside.I immediately pressed the call button to summon a nurse. "Excuse me! Can someone please get this trespasser out of my ward? I'd very much appreciate never seeing her in here again!"Daphne stirred and tried to move closer. "Hush, Tim! We can set aside whatever issues and misunderstandings we have, can't we? For now, just let me take care of you...""No! I don't wanna see your face!" I snapped. The force of my emotions sent me into a violent coughing fit, and the nurse stepped in to escort Daphne away.A few hours later, I was able to walk again. I slowly made my way to my mother's ward. She was already awake, with only mild complications."I heard about everything, Timmy. You've been through so much, haven't you?" she said as she patted my head. "Fortunately, Nora's been such a darling these past two days. She's taken care

Daphne and Drake showed up in my hospital room early the next morning. She was still wearing the same clothes she'd had on when I last saw her yesterday, and when she came close, I caught the scent of Drake's cologne on her. They had been together all night."Tim, do you remember? Today's the day we get our marriage license!" she announced."W-What? But my mom hasn't even woken up yet!""Come on, man. Can you not do your argumentative schtick right now? Today's the day, Tim! It was tough enough scheduling this. You can't just say no and bail on something this important," Drake interjected once again, despite no one asking for his opinion.I was nearly hysterical. "How long are you two going to keep playing dumb?! This has nothing to do with me, and you both know it! You 'accidentally' put Drake's name down as the groom again, didn't you, Daphne? How many times did you think you could pull this stunt?!"Daphne's frown deepened. She checked the app on her phone, then froze in shock
