The Wrong Vow, My Perfect Match

Chapter 4: The Shadow of the Past

The silence in the lobby was suffocating.

Ama stood frozen between two worlds—her past and her present—both colliding violently in a single moment she never saw coming.

Kofi stared at her like he couldn’t believe what he was seeing.

“Ama…?” His voice cracked slightly. “Is this some kind of joke?”

Ama’s throat tightened. She couldn’t speak. Not here. Not in front of everyone. Not with Daniel’s arm still lightly resting on her waist like a claim.

Kofi took a step forward. “You told me you had nothing. That you were struggling. And now you’re—”

“Enough.”

Daniel’s voice cut through the air like steel.

It wasn’t loud, but it carried authority that made everyone still.

Kofi paused.

Daniel turned his head slightly, his expression unreadable. “You’re speaking to my wife.”

The words landed like a hammer.

Ama flinched internally.

My wife.

It still felt unreal.

Kofi laughed bitterly. “Wife? You don’t even know her. I know her. She’s Ama—”

Daniel’s gaze sharpened.

That small shift alone made Kofi stop talking.

Something about Daniel wasn’t just wealth. It was control. The kind of presence that made powerful men hesitate.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Careful,” he said quietly. “You’re standing in my building, speaking about my wife, and raising your voice.”

A tense silence followed.

Kofi clenched his fists. His pride was visible now, cracking under pressure. “She was my girlfriend first.”

Ama’s heart dropped.

The words hung in the air like poison.

She wanted to disappear.

Daniel glanced at her briefly. Just once. But that was enough to make her blood run cold.

“So that’s it,” Daniel said calmly. “History.”

Kofi’s eyes widened. “History?”

Daniel nodded slightly. “People outgrow history.”

The room murmured.

Employees were watching now. Phones lowered. Whispers spreading.

Ama felt exposed.

Like her entire life was being dissected in public.

Kofi looked at her again, softer now. “Ama… come with me. Whatever this is, you don’t belong here.”

For a second—just a second—Ama almost broke.

Almost.

Because part of her remembered who Kofi used to be. The laughter. The promises. The dream of a simple life.

But then she remembered the betrayal.

The abandonment.

The pain.

And beside her stood Daniel.

A man she didn’t understand… but who had not left her standing in poverty.

Before she could speak, Daniel tightened his hold slightly.

Not painful.

But firm.

A silent warning.

Ama swallowed hard.

“I… I can’t,” she whispered.

Kofi froze.

“What?”

Her voice shook. “I can’t leave.”

Silence fell again.

Kofi stared at her like she had just stabbed him.

“You chose him?” he asked slowly. “Over me?”

Ama didn’t answer.

Because the truth was worse.

She didn’t choose Daniel.

She was placed beside him.

But saying that out loud would destroy everything.

Daniel finally stepped forward again, placing himself fully between them.

“This conversation is over,” he said.

Kofi’s face darkened. “You think you’ve won something?”

Daniel didn’t react.

He simply looked at him.

And smiled faintly.

“No,” he said. “I think you lost her long before I ever met her.”

That sentence broke something in the air.

Kofi’s breathing changed.

Ama felt it too.

A shift.

Danger.

Then Kofi pointed at Daniel, voice low. “You don’t know who she really is.”

Daniel tilted his head slightly.

“Oh,” he said softly. “But I intend to find out.”

Ama’s heart stopped.

Because for the first time since the wedding…

She realized something terrifying.

Daniel didn’t just accept her.

He was investigating her.

And Kofi… had just confirmed she had a past worth digging into.

As security stepped closer, Kofi was escorted out, still staring at Ama like she had betrayed him all over again.

When he disappeared, the lobby slowly returned to normal.

But Ama didn’t feel relief.

She felt watched.

Because Daniel hadn’t let go of her waist yet.

And now, his voice dropped low—just for her.

“You’re full of secrets, aren’t you?”

Ama’s breath hitched.

She turned slightly toward him. “No…”

But even she didn’t believe her own voice.

Daniel studied her face for a long moment.

Then released her.

“Good,” he said calmly. “Because I hate surprises.”

And without another word, he walked ahead.

Ama stood still in the middle of the lobby.

Her heart racing.

Her past exposed.

Her present unstable.

And her future…

No longer safe.

Because Daniel Mensah wasn’t just her unexpected husband.

He was the man who had just started pulling at every thread of her life.

And sooner or later…

He would uncover the truth she was never meant to hide.
