Julian POV

The dream always started the same way—with the weight of silence.

I was seven again, standing in the doorway of my father’s study. The room smelled of aged leather and tobacco, rich mahogany bookshelves towering on either side like sentinels. Afternoon light slanted through the venetian blinds, casting prison-bar shadows across the Persian rug beneath my feet. My father sat behind his massive oak desk, fountain pen poised above a document, not bothering to look up as I approached.

  • The abandoned wife and her secret son   Chapter 51

Aria POVBest friend My phone buzzed on the side table and I looked at the screen.Vanessa.I let it ring twice before I picked it up.“Finally,” her voice came through warm and immediate. “I was about to send a search party. Do you know how long it’s been since you called me back?”Despite everything, something in my chest loosened slightly.“I’ve been busy.”“Busy.” She repeated it like the word personally affected her. “Aria. We are best friends. Busy is not a reason, busy is an excuse.”“Vanessa—”“I’m just saying. One text. One. That’s all I ask.” A pause, then her voice softened into something more genuine. “How are you? How is your mum?”“She’s doing better,” I said. “The surgery went well. She’s recovering.”“Oh, thank God.” I heard her exhale. “I’ve been thinking about her every single day. And you. Are you eating? Sleeping?”“Yes.”“That was too fast.”“Vanessa.”“I’m serious, that answer came out too fast.” She laughed, but there was something underneath it, a sharpness th

  • The abandoned wife and her secret son   Chapter 50

Aria POVThe room was quiet except for the monitor beside my bed, doing its job whether I wanted it to or not.I shifted against the pillow and reached toward the side table for my phone.Julian was beside me before my hand got halfway there — picking it up smoothly and holding it out to me without a word, like he had been watching for exactly that moment. Like he had been waiting for something to do.I took it from him slowly. “I could have reached it.”“I know.” He sat back down in the chair beside my bed. “How are you feeling?”“Same as ten minutes ago.”He nodded like that was a reasonable answer and settled back, elbows on his knees, hands linked loosely. He wasn’t fidgeting. He wasn’t checking his own phone or looking for somewhere else to be. He was just — there. Fully, quietly there in a way that sat uncomfortably against everything I had grown used to from him.I put my phone down without unlocking it.“The doctor said you’ll be fine,” Julian said after a moment.I exhaled. “

  • The abandoned wife and her secret son   Chapter 49

Julian POVI heard the crash before I was fully awake. That sharp, violent sound of something shattering pulled me out of sleep and onto my feet before my mind had caught up with my body. I was already moving, already out of the bedroom and down the hallway, my heart doing something unsteady in my chest. The kitchen.I smelled the silence of it before I saw anything — that particular stillness of a room where something had just gone wrong. Then I was in the doorway and I saw her.Aria.Standing in the middle of broken ceramic, barefoot, one hand pressed flat against her thigh, a thin line of blood running from her foot to the floor. She was staring at her own hand like it belonged to someone she didn’t recognise.“Aria.”Her eyes came up to mine and I watched it happen — that quiet, practiced assembling of composure. Pulling herself together before anyone could see she had come apart. She had been doing it her whole life. I had watched her do it a hundred times in this marriage and to

  • The abandoned wife and her secret son   Slipping

Aria POV I had been home for two days. That was how I measured time now — not by dates or hours but by the small victories of returning to normal. Two days since, I had left the hospital with my mother stable and breathing and no longer the color of something fading. Two days since I had walked back into this house that still smelled like Julian’s cologne in the curtains and my dried paint in the studio down the hall.I hadn’t gone into the studio.I told myself I was tired. I needed to settle down first, to eat properly and sleep in a real bed and let my body recover from the collapse before I asked anything else of it. Dr. Daniel’s voice sat in the back of my mind like a quiet instruction I kept meaning to follow.Rest. Eat. You matter too.So I was trying. That morning, I woke up before the sun had fully committed to rising, that particular grey hour where the house feels like it belongs to no one. Julian was somewhere — I had heard him moving the night before, the low sound of a

Aria pov Dr. Daniel came in quietly. That was the thing about him I had noticed from the very first day — he never entered a room like he owned it. He knocked even when the door was already open, moved with a kind of deliberate calm that felt less like manner and more like character. He had his clipboard in one hand and his attention was already on my mother’s monitors before he was fully through the door.I was sitting in the chair beside her bed, my legs folded underneath me, watching him the way you watch someone you’ve decided to trust but haven’t fully admitted it to yourself yet.“Dr. Daniel.” I straightened slightly.“Aria.” He glanced at me briefly — a quick, assessing look that I was starting to recognise. Not intrusive. Just attentive. Then his eyes moved back to my mother. “I’m just here to check her vitals. You don’t have to get up.”I hadn’t planned to. I watched him work — the quiet efficiency of it, the way he checked each reading with the kind of focus that made you f

Aria POVThe first thing I noticed was the beeping.Steady. Rhythmic. Unrelenting. It pulled me back before my eyes were even willing to open — that mechanical pulse cutting through the fog like a lifeline I hadn’t asked for. My lids felt heavy, like something had been pressing down on them for a long time, and the light that greeted me when I finally managed to part them was white and clinical and far too sharp.I blinked. Once. Twice. The ceiling came into focus slowly, and with it, the familiar smell of antiseptic and recycled air.Hospital.I didn’t need anyone to tell me. My body already knew — the stiff mattress beneath me, the faint pull of something attached to my arm, the particular kind of silence that wasn’t really silence at all but a collection of monitored, measured sounds.I’d been sitting in this building long enough that it had started to feel like a second skin. Apparently, it had swallowed me whole without my permission.“What’s going on?”My voice came out wrong —

Julian POVI couldn’t possibly believe Aria would say she wanted a divorce. Why? What gave her the audacity to say it to my face?Divorce. The word kept ringing in my head. I poured myself a glass of whiskey, the amber liquid sloshing against the crystal. I’m sure she didn’t know what she was sayin

Aria POVDr. Daniel walked into the room quietly, the way doctors always did — like they had learned early on how to carry heavy news without letting it show in their footsteps. His expression was composed, professional, giving nothing away before he was ready to give it.“Her surgery is scheduled

Aria POVThe hospital smelled the way it always did — antiseptic and something faintly floral underneath, like someone had tried to soften the sterile reality of the place with an air freshener and failed. My sneakers squeaked softly against the polished linoleum as I made my way down the corridor

Aria POV The coffee shop was the kind of place that made you feel like the rest of the world could wait. Soft acoustic music drifted from somewhere near the ceiling, low enough that you could talk over it without raising your voice. The air smelled of roasted beans and warm vanilla, and every surf
