Garrick's POV

I never thought it would spiral like this.

When I taunted Lyra I didn't mean much harm behind it. I just wanted to poke her a little bit, I did it because I wanted to see her strength. To drag it out of her, the strength I knew was buried somewhere deep inside her and I had gotten a glimpse of it earlier when she had slapped me.

I did it because I wanted her to understand how much she was capable of and be able to harness it without relying on her emotion.

I thought—hoped—she’d snap just enough to show me the fire she had, enough to prove she could fight like the queen Ronan needed.

But I hadn’t expected this.

The first hit came hard, faster than I could block. Pain exploded through my ribs, bone snapping like brittle wood. I gasped, staggered, tried to brace myself but she was already on me. Her face twisted in rage, no recognition in her eyes. She wasn’t Lyra anymore—she was something else.

Something wild, unrestrained.

Her wolf? No.

I didn't see her wolf. This was a

Lyra’s POVI didn’t know how long I had been running. The branches whipped against my arms, my face, cutting my skin as I stumbled deeper and deeper into the forbidden forest. My chest burned, each breath felt like fire through my lungs. Tears blurred my vision, but I didn’t stop. I couldn’t stop. Not when the image of Garrick’s broken body was still burned into the back of my eyelids.“Monster,” I choked out between gasps. My own voice sounded foreign, broken. “I’m a monster.”The words came out again and again, spilling from my mouth like venom, until they became the only thing I could hear over the pounding of my heart.I collapsed to my knees at one point, my hands shaking violently. I looked down and—gods—his blood. It was still there. Dried into my fingernails. Staining my palms. Smearing my wrists.“No!” I screamed, clawing at my skin. I scraped and scratched until it burned, until it stung, but I could still see it. His blood. His blood because of me.They were on my hands.Te

Ronan’s POVThe healers’ wing was a blur of light and voices when I crashed through the doors, Garrick’s blood still hot against my arms. My boots slammed against the stone, my breath ragged, my chest burning with every step.“Clear the bed!” I roared. They scrambled out of the way as I laid him down. Carefully—though nothing about this felt careful enough—I placed him on the cot. His body sagged unnaturally, bones jutting at angles that made bile rise in my throat. And then… silence. One of the healers, a woman barely past her early 50s, covered her mouth with trembling hands. The words slipped out before she could stop them. “My gods…”Another healer turned, gagged, and vomited violently into a basin. That sound—that horrible sound—set everything off.The room erupted in chaos.“Get the blood binders!”“No, no, start his heart first—hurry!”“Stabilize the lung, it’s collapsing!”Hands darted everywhere. Instruments clattered. Voices overlapped, desperate and panicked. I stood there,

  • The alpha king's slave mate   CHAPTER EIGHTY EIGHT

Ronan’s POVThe moment she ran with tears streaming down her red face, her eyes wild and broken, I froze. My chest clenched so tightly I could hardly breathe. For the first time in my life, I didn’t know what to do.Do I run after her—my mate, my other half, the one the gods gave me? Or do I fall to my knees beside the man who’s been my brother in all but blood? The silence in my head was deafening and tearing me apart.Lyra’s scent lingered, fading with each second she got farther away, but Garrick’s blood was everywhere. The metallic smell of it clung to the air, to my tongue, to my skin. My wolf clawed at me, urging me to chase her, but my heart… my heart was breaking as I stared down at Garrick.I remembered the voice in my head from earlier which was broke, weak, desperate. “Help… me.”I’d been in my office when it hit me. That irritating, itching feeling under my skin, like the world itself was warning me something was wrong. I’d tried to brush it off, but then his voice had ent

Lyra povThe world slowed in that instant, the breath caught in my chest as my fist got closer to his face, the voice kept cheering me on.And then—“Lyra!”Ember. She screamed in my head. Her voice was loud and desperate. The sound shattered through the haze of fury drowning me. My vision snapped back into focus, and in that single heartbeat I realized what I was about to do—what I was about to become. With a gasp, I redirected my strike, slamming my fist into the ground just beside Garrick’s head. The force of the blow was monstrous and unnatural. The earth split open beneath my hand, jagged cracks like spider webs spread out in every direction. The sound was deafening, like the sound of an earthquake happening right there in the sparring ring. Dust and dirt exploded into the air, a suffocating cloud that swallowed us whole.Out of the corner of my eye, I saw it—tiny, writhing shadows crawling away from me, hissing and scattering like vermin fleeing the light. And then… that voice.

  • The alpha king's slave mate   CHAPTER EIGHTY FIVE

Lyra’s pov The next morning, I woke with sore muscles and lingering tingles from Ronan's touch. He wasn't in bed, I vaguely remembered him waking up early and telling me he needed to go attend yo something in the kingdom urgently but I was too sleepy to see him off.I smiled remembering the events of last night. But i shoved those thoughts aside, today was training. Today I would prove myself.Garrick was already waiting in the courtyard, his arms crossed, a smug grin tugging at his mouth. The sight of him—alive, smirking, unbothered after what he’d done yesterday—boiled something inside me.Yes he was my one and only friend but still. Before I could second-guess myself, I walked up to him and slapped him. Hard.Smack! The sound of it echoed in the air. His head snapped to the side, and to my horror two teeth flew from his mouth, clattering against the stone ground.I froze. He froze. We both just stared at each other in stunned silence. My palm stung from the force. I hadn’t meant t
