Chapter Ten: The Wall

The next morning, Xavier was back.

Maya opened the door to find him standing on her porch. He'd shaved. Changed his clothes. He looked like he'd actually slept, barely.

Good morning, he said.

Maya slammed the door in his face.

She leaned against it. Her heart pounded. Kaelen paced restlessly beneath her skin.

He's back, the wolf snarled. He won't leave. He won't stop.

Maya pressed her palm to her forehead. Go away, Xavier.

I can't do that.

She heard him sit down on the porc

  • The alpha's Regret    On the Run

Chapter Twelve: On the RunThe safe house was a cabin in the mountains.Maya had never been there before. It was one of Elara's hiding spots,a place for wolves who needed to disappear. It was small. Wooden. Remote. Miles from the nearest town.Perfect.She carried Xavier inside. He was heavy. Unconscious. His wound had closed, but the silver poisoning still lingered. His skin was pale. His breathing was shallow. She laid him on the bed. She checked his bandages. She wiped the sweat from his brow.Don't you dare die on me, she whispered. Not after everything.Lyra stood in the doorway. Her stuffed wolf was clutched to her chest. Her eyes were wide with fear.Mama, is the wolf man going to die?Maya's heart clenched. She walked over and knelt in front of her daughter. No, sweetheart. He's going to be fine. He's just tired. But he's so pale.He lost a lot of blood. But Mama fixed him. Remember? Mama always fixes things.Lyra looked at Xavier. Then she walked over to the bed. She climbed

  • The alpha's Regret    The Threat

Chapter Eleven: The ThreatThree weeks passed.Xavier came every day. He brought flowers. He brought toys for Lyra. He sat on the porch and waited.Maya ignored him. Mostly. But Lyra didn't. She ran to the door every morning. She dragged Xavier into the garden. She made him push her on the swing. She made him build sandcastles. She made him laugh. And Maya watched. She watched him change diapers. She watched him make breakfast. She watched him read bedtime stories. She watched him fall asleep on the couch, exhausted, Lyra curled up on his chest. She watched him become a father. And the walls around her heart kept cracking. One night, Maya sat alone on the back porch. The ocean crashed against the shore. The moon hung low and silver. She hugged her knees to her chest and stared at the water.Xavier found her there. Can I sit? he asked. She didn't answer. He sat anyway.I know you don't trust me, he said. I know I don't deserve your trust. But I need you to know something. What? Her voi

However long it takes.Maya walked away from the door.Lyra was in the kitchen, eating cereal. Milk dripped down her chin.Mama, who was that?No one, sweetheart. That's the wolf man, isn't it?Maya froze. Wolf man? From yesterday. He has sad eyes. Like a wolf who lost his pack.Maya knelt down. She wiped Lyra's chin. He's no one. Just a stranger. He's not a stranger, Mama. I saw him in my dreams.Maya's blood went cold. In your dreams?Lyra nodded

  • The alpha's Regret    The Knock on the Door

Chapter Nine: The Knock on the Door The drive to Port Crescent took six hours.Xavier didn't stop. He didn't eat. He didn't sleep. He just drove, his hands gripping the wheel, his eyes fixed on the road ahead. He'd left Silver Crescent at dawn. The sun was setting now, painting the sky in shades of orange and gold. The ocean appeared on his left, vast and endless. The coastal town of Port Crescent lay ahead. His heart pounded. His hands shook. What am I going to say? he thought. What am I going to do?He didn't know. He just knew he had to see her. I had to see his daughter. I had to try to make things right. He found the address the trackers had given him. A small house by the sea, painted white with blue shutters. A garden full of flowers. A swing set in the yard.A home. A real home.Xavier parked the car. He sat there for a long moment, staring at the house. His heart hammered in his chest. His palms were slick with sweat. She's in there, he thought. She's in there, and she doesn

  • The alpha's Regret    The Reckoning

Chapter Eight: The ReckoningThree years, two months, and fourteen days.Xavier had been counting. He sat in his study, staring at the same map he'd been staring at for hours. The border patrols. The supply routes. The pack's defenses. It was all the same. It had been the same for three years.Nothing had changed.Except everything had changed. The pack was prosperous. The warriors were strong. The borders were secure. On the surface, Silver Crescent was thriving. But inside, Xavier was hollow. He'd been hollow since the night he'd rejected Maya. Since the night he'd watched her bleed in the mud, her eyes filled with pain and betrayal. Since the night he'd sent her away. He'd told himself it was the right choice. Seraphina was his true mate. Maya was a liar. A manipulator. A deceiver. But deep down, he'd known the truth. He'd been wrong. It had started with small things.A scent that reminded him of Maya. A laugh that sounded like hers. A glimpse of honey-brown hair in a crowd that ma

Chapter Seven: Three Years LaterThree years passed like water through open fingers.Maya stood at the window of her beachside house, watching the sun rise over the ocean. The sky was painted in shades of pink and gold. The waves crashed gently against the shore. Seagulls cried overhead. It was peaceful. Beautiful. Everything she'd ever wanted. She took a sip of her coffee and smiled.Three years ago, she'd been broken. Bleeding. Running for her life. She'd collapsed at the border of the human world, pregnant and alone, with nothing but the clothes on her back and a shattered heart. Now she had everything.A successful career. A beautiful home. A daughter who was the light of her life. Friends who loved her. A family she'd chosen for herself. She was thriving. We made it, Kaelen said softly. We actually made it.Maya pressed her hand to her chest. Her wolf was content. At peace. The bond with Xavier was gone, severed, broken, dead. She'd healed. She'd moved on.She didn't need him anym
