A Court of Arcane Souls is a collection of short stories from my ongoing book series The Gods' Saga. These stories were written based on characters or storylines fans wished to learn more about. I shake my head and look at Mattias to see his face frozen in contemplation. I climb onto the bed next to him and cuddle up beside him against the headboard, rubbing his arm. “Mattias?” I gently call to get his attention. He slowly looks at me. “I…I never thought about children,” he admits, his expression still one of shock. “Oh.” I feel my face heat up and suddenly the air between us feels awkward. “Do you want to talk about it?” I carefully ask. He nods slowly, rubbing my hand resting on his arm. “I’ve been alive a long time and I just…I got to a point where I believed I wasn’t blessed with an animai and that my charges would be the closest thing to children I would ever have,” he confesses, his words echoing centuries of sadness and longing. “After a thousand years, I can understand why you’d think that. I would have probably given up too,” I admit, my head nodding compassionately. “Is…I mean…Do you…” he trails off, looking physically flustered as he tries to muster the words

“Hold that thought,” I instruct, then pad my way over to the door and open it. I blink in surprise when I see Sebastian and Lemuel standing on the other side of the threshold. Sebastian’s emotions are all over his face while Lemuel remains cool as the impassive cucumber he is. “We heard about what happened, we just wanted to check in and make sure everything was okay,” Lemuel explains, his electric blue and purple eyes brimming with concern as his voice softens. “I should have gone with you!” Sebastian exclaims, chastising himself. “What the hell for? Mattias is my animai; the situation was mine to handle,” I declare, letting them both in. Lemuel graces Mattias with a respectful nod, his eyes filled with compassion. If there’s anyone who knows what it’s like to live with a curse, it’s Lemuel and it’s something he and Mattias have been bonding over. I urgently lead him over to the bed and sit him down, then sit behind him and hold his body close to mine as I place my arm in front of his mouth. “You need to drink, kardia mou,” I gently encourage him. “It’s okay.” I feel his apprehension, but his hunger is too strong to resist. He firmly clutches my wrist, making me wince at his strength as I feel all ten of his canines pierce through my flesh. I bite my lips together, muffling a yelp of pain as I feel him start to drink my blood. After a moment, the pain starts to become tolerable and I relax, feeling a sense of contentment wash over me, my heart and soul swelling with love and pride to know that I can take care of him and that he trusted me enough to do so. I watch with soft, tender eyes, my fingers softly moving through his hair as I feel his craze lift almost instantly. We continue to go over the plans for the Atlesper Games from the competition to the opening and closing ceremony and the grand celebration afterwards. We’re bouncing ideas off each other like two ping pong players in an epic rally when I suddenly let out a gasp as an unbearably hot sensation runs through my body. I feel like my blood is on fire and someone has poured acid down my throat, and if that wasn’t bad enough it’s joined by inextinguishable hunger.
