The days started blending into each other in a quiet way.

I woke up later than usual. The bed was empty beside me, but the smell of coffee was already in the apartment. I sat up slowly, one hand under the bump for support, and waited for the slight dizziness to pass before standing.

Adrian was in the kitchen, shirt sleeves rolled up, moving around like he had been awake for a while. He looked over when he heard me.

“Morning.”

“You’re up early.”

“Couldn’t sleep. You were restless.”

I made a face

Daniel was less than a day old when Damien made his first real move.I was sitting up in bed feeding him when Adrian stepped back into the room after a short call. His face was calm, but the kind of calm that meant something had happened.“He’s still here,” he said.“I know.”“He’s not just sitting anymore. He brought a lawyer with him. They’re asking for confirmation that the child has been born and whether my name is on the paperwork.”My mother, who had been folding a blanket by the window, turned around slowly.“He has no right,” she said.“He doesn’t,” Adrian answered. “But he’s trying to create a paper trail.”I looked down at Daniel. His mouth was still working slowly, one small hand resting against my skin. The idea of Damien’s name anywhere near him made my stomach tighten.“He’s not getting anything,” I said.“I know.”Adrian came and sat on the edge of the bed. He watched Daniel for a moment before speaking again.“Security has already been instructed. He doesn’t come up. T

The urge to push became impossible to ignore. One moment the midwife was telling me to wait, and the next my body took over. A contraction hit harder than the ones before and the pressure dropped low and heavy. I grabbed the back of Adrian’s neck and bore down with a long, broken shout.“That’s it,” the midwife said quickly. “Baby’s coming. Push with the next one.”I didn’t need the instruction. The next wave was already rising. I tucked my chin, held onto Adrian, and pushed with everything I had. The burning started then — sharp and intense, stretching beyond anything I had imagined. I cried out through it, the sound raw and open.“Good, Sophia. Again when it comes.”Adrian’s forehead was pressed against the side of my head. His voice stayed low and steady near my ear.“I’m right here. Keep going.”My mother stood on the other side of the bed, one hand gripping the rail, eyes fixed on me. She didn’t speak much. She just stayed present.Another contraction slammed through me. I pushed

  • The best friend i trusted   Chapter 101 – The Shop

I woke up restless.Nothing painful. Just a feeling that I needed to leave the apartment. My mother was in the kitchen. Adrian was on a call. I walked out and told them I was going to the shop.“Just to look around,” I said. “I’m not in labour. I’ll sit the whole time.”My mother didn’t like it. Adrian liked it even less. But I insisted. In the end he drove me there himself and parked right in front.“One hour,” he said. “Then we go home.”“One hour.”Inside the shop everything looked normal. Titi was surprised to see me but didn’t argue much. I walked slowly between the displays, touched the edge of the counter, then sat down behind it. For a while I just watched people come and go.The first real contraction came without warning. It started low in my back and wrapped around to the front, tight and deep. I gripped the edge of the counter and breathed through it. It lasted longer than the practice ones I had felt before. When it finally loosened I stayed still, waiting.Titi noticed m

  • The best friend i trusted   Chapter 100 – Nine Months

I reached nine months on a quiet Tuesday. There was no big announcement. I simply woke up, looked at the calendar on my phone, and realised the date had finally arrived. The baby could come any day now. The thought sat with me while I brushed my teeth and while I stood in the kitchen watching my mother cut fruit.Adrian came in from his morning call and placed a paper bag on the counter. Inside were more grapes, two ripe mangoes, and a small box of strawberries.“You already bought fruit yesterday,” I said.“These looked better.”He said it like it was the most normal reason in the world. My mother glanced at him, then at me, and continued arranging the slices on a plate without comment. She had stopped questioning the way he did things. She simply accepted that this was how he showed care.I sat at the counter and ate what they put in front of me. The apartment felt calm. The nursery was ready. The hospital bag had been checked three times. There was nothing left to prepare, only the

I was eight months and three weeks when my mother called and said she was coming. It wasn’t a question. It was a decision she had already made.“I’ve packed two bags,” she said. “I’ll be there on Thursday. Don’t argue with me, Sophia. You’re close now. You need someone who has done this before.”I sat on the sofa with the phone against my ear and looked down at the bump. “Mum, I’m fine.”“I know you’re fine. I’m still coming.”Adrian was in the kitchen. He looked over when he heard my voice change. I mouthed “my mum” and he nodded once, like he had already expected it.“Alright,” I said into the phone. “Thursday.”“Good girl. Tell that man of yours I’ll need the guest room ready.”I ended the call and put the phone down.Adrian walked over with a glass of water. “She’s coming.”“Yes. Thursday.”“I’ll have the room prepared.”“You don’t mind?”“She’s your mother. She should be here.”That was all he said about it. No fuss. No long discussion. Just acceptance. The next morning he came b

  • The best friend i trusted   Chapter 98 – Quietly

The next few days at the shop passed without any sign of Stella.I noticed it on the third day. No cream blazer. No careful smile. No comments about Damien or Adrian or how surprising it was that he stayed. The door opened and closed with normal customers only. By the fifth day I stopped expecting her.Titi noticed too.“That woman hasn’t come back,” she said while we were going through a new delivery.“I know.”“You think she got the message?”“Maybe.”I didn’t say more than that. I had an idea what had happened, but I waited.Adrian told me himself on Sunday evening. We were in the living room. He had his laptop open but he wasn’t really working. I was going through the weekly numbers from the shop on my phone. After a while he closed the laptop and set it on the table.“Stella won’t be coming to the shop again,” he said.I looked up. “You spoke to her?”“I spoke to her husband.”I put the phone down. “What did you say?”“Enough. He understands it’s in their best interest if she sta
