They rode through the night without stopping. Maya's body went numb from sitting so long. Her arms ached from holding onto Dominic, Her eyes burned from the wind, but she didn't complain, complaining wouldn't change anything.

Dawn broke as they crossed into the next state. The landscape changed from industrial to rural, trees replaced buildings, open fields stretched for miles, they were deep in the countryside now. Far from the city. Far from the Vipers.

Or so Maya hoped.

"Almost there." Dominic called back to her over the engine noise. "Another twenty minutes."

Maya just nodded against his back. She was too tired to respond, too tired to think, running on empty in every possible way.

The charter clubhouse appeared around a corner they took, bigger than the safehouse, more permanent. An actual two story building with a large parking area. Several bikes were already there, members of the local chapter waiting to greet them.

Dominic entered in and turn off the engine. Maya drop down

Maya woke up to the sound of water dripping somewhere. Her neck hurt from sleeping on concrete. She sat up and every muscle complained."You awake?" Dominic's voice came through the window."Yeah.""How long were we out?""No idea," Maya said. She looked at the light bulb still burning. "Could be morning. Could be midnight."Footsteps approached them, Maya got up. Pressed against the wall by the door.A different Viper this time. Younger. He had food trays. Slide them through the slots. Started to leave."Hey, can I know what the time is? ," Maya called. The kid stopped. Looked back. "Why do you want to know?""Just want to know how many hours left before we get killed," Maya said. The kid's face changed immediately. Something like guilt. "Four in the morning. Reaper said two more days."He walked away fast. Like he was avoiding further questions.Maya went ahead and grabbed the tray. More sandwiches. More water. She ate because she had no other choice and her body needed energy not

The car drove for about an hour, or maybe more. Maya's hands were zip tied behind her and every pothole sent sharp pain up her arms. Dominic sat beside her with blood dried on his face from the pistol whip they gave him."You okay?" Maya whispered."Yeah," Dominic said. "You?""Been better."The driver turned his head. "Shut up."They went quiet. The car left the highway and turned onto dirt. Trees pressed close on both sides. No streetlights. No houses. Just darkness. The car slowed at a compound. High fence. Towers at each corner with men holding rifles. The gates rolled open."Where are we?" Maya asked.Nobody answered. They yanked them out. Maya's legs buckled. She'd been sitting too long. Dominic bumped his shoulder under hers to keep her up."Move," a Viper said. He pushed them toward a building.Inside didn't match outside. Polished floors. Real paintings on walls. Furniture that cost more than Maya's tuition. Not what she expected from a gang compound. They walked down a hall.

They had about only eight hours to pack and leave. Maya watched everyone moving around the warehouse grabbing what they could carry. Not much. Just clothes, cash and guns.Carol was helping Wrench stand up. He was not healed yet but he was trying to put weight on his bad leg, trying not to look weak. "I need you to slow down, I can't." Wrench said. "Leave me here. I'll be fine.""Shut up," Carol said. "You're coming."Dominic was on the phone with someone. Arranging fake IDs. New passports. The stuff you need when you're trying to disappear.Jake came over to Maya. "You got everything?"Maya looked down at herself. Still wearing the same clothes from the bar. Still wet. Still smelling like smoke, beer and blood. All she had was her phone and a gun someone gave to her."I have nothing," Maya said."That's perfect, less to carry," Jake said. " Carol's got a bag of clothes in the van. You can change later.""Where are we going?" Maya asked."Mexico first," Jake said. "Cross the border to

They all planned and converged in an old warehouse thirty miles away from the city. Carol was already there with Wrench. She'd stopped the bleeding but he looked terrible. His face was pale. Sweating. Breathing like he'd just run five miles."He needs a hospital," Carol said when they walked in."Can't do it," Dominic said. "Cops will be checking for gunshot wounds tonight.""Then he needs that doctor again. The one who fixes people off the books."Dominic got his phone out. Made the call. Talked on a low tone with his voice almost inaudible for a while then hung up. "He'll arrive here in about an hour from now. Wants cash."They waited. Maya found a corner and sat down. Her wet clothes stuck to her skin. She was cold but too tired to care.Connor brought her a blanket. "Are you doing okay?""No, I am not ," Maya said. "But I'm still breathing. That is the most important.""That is not really good but good to hear anyways, it's something," Connor said. He came closer and sat next to

Maya heard the first shots and sat up straight. She counted five. Then ten. Then stopped counting because they came too fast and continuously.People ran out of the bar screaming. Regular customers who'd been having drinks. They scattered across the parking lot looking for cover.Maya's hand went to the door handle. Dominic told her to stay but screw that. She wasn't sitting here while he got shot. The radio crackled. "We're pinned down. More security than we thought. Need backup at the south entrance."That was Jake's voice. Maya looked at the bar. Saw flashes in the windows. Heard more gunshots. Glass breaking. She grabbed the pistol from under her seat straight and almost immediately without thinking. Got out of the car and sarted running.A security guard came around the corner. Saw her. Raised his gun. Maya fired first. Hit him in the chest. He went down. She'd just shot someone. Actually shot someone. But she kept moving. The side door was open. She went through low. The hallway

Day one started with training. Dominic lined everyone up in the factory and made them run drills. How to clear a room. How to cover each other. How to reload fast under pressure.Maya watched from the side at first. She'd never fired a gun before this whole mess started. Now she was supposed to help take down a motorcycle club president."Get over here," Dominic called to her. "You're not going to just sit and watch.""I don't know what I'm suppose to do," Maya said."Then learn," Jake said. He handed her a pistol. "Safety's here. Magazine release is here. You aim and you squeeze. Don't pull. Squeeze."They set up targets at the other end of the factory. Old cardboard boxes with circles drawn on them. Maya raised the gun. Her hands shook."Breathe," Dominic said behind her. "Line up your sight. Squeeze slow."Maya fired. The recoil surprised her. The bullet went wide. Didn't even hit the box."Again," Dominic said. She fired ten more times. Hit the box twice. Nowhere near the center.
