*Isla*

The first thing freedom does is soak through my left boot.

Rain hammers the stones beyond the Salt Gate hard enough to flatten the torch smoke. Water runs from the iron arch in black streams. Behind us, the guards lower their spears and close ranks against the crowd still trapped inside.

They do not stop us.

That takes three steps to believe.

Nightshade spreads across the road without anyone giving the order. Liora takes Bran's good side. Tomas keeps near Sava, who watches every ro

*Isla* Caelen's key opens Maeven's kitchen. The house sits above the smoke-dark hall, built into the mountain with one wall of bare stone. A narrow side door leads to a room holding two benches, a scarred table, and a hearth broad enough to roast an entire deer. The fire is cold. The room is not abandoned. Bundles of winter herbs hang from the beams. Flour waits in sealed crocks. Six cloaks occupy the pegs near the main door. Someone has scrubbed the table recently enough that damp darkens the grain. Caelen stands on the threshold. His hand remains on the key. "Your house?" I ask. "My aunt's." "Maeven said yours remains." "The two upper rooms were mine. The side door was ours. Fennec houses grow together when families do." He says it in the past tense. I step inside. My left leg is stiff from the hall, and the raised threshold catches my boot. Caelen's hand lifts toward my elbow. "Help?" he asks. "Yes… please." He steadies me over the sill and releases. No mineral he

*Isla* Then roofs emerge beneath it. Low timber houses climb the slope in uneven rows, their foundations cut into the mountain. Covered walkways connect upper doors. Snow lies thick on the northern roofs and nowhere else. Heat from shared ovens has melted the lower paths into black mud. No wall surrounds the den. The people do that themselves. They gather along the entrance path as soon as our column appears. Adults stand in front. Children peer between coats and elbows. Every visible wrist carries an iron band. Caelen's does not. His horse slows beneath him. The bond gives me no words, only a pressure like a held breath. He knows the woman beside the first well. The old man leaning against the smokehouse. The boy on the bakehouse roof who has forgotten to hide the sling around his arm. His gaze catches on each of them. Nobody calls his name. Maeven rides through the crowd without stopping. Rovan follows. Nightshade enters behind them with the sledges and tools, watched as

*Isla* By nightfall, Caelen and I have touched twice. Once when he passes me a cup. Once when the trail narrows and my shoulder brushes his. Both times, we stop breathing. This is becoming inefficient. We camp in an abandoned boundary shelter fifty paces beyond the buried oath-stone. The building has three stone walls, half a roof, and an iron stove that smokes whenever the wind changes. Fennec patrols once used it to inspect wagons entering pack territory. Now Bran lies near the stove while Tomas checks his ribs. Torven and Sena guard the copper loop. Maeven's scouts cut every ash mark from the nearby blackpines. The northbound rider's tracks continue deeper into Fennec land. No one has followed them yet. Sava kneels beside the exposed oath-stone with the route cipher balanced on a wooden board. She has made us repeat twelve phrases toward the stone. It ignores questions. Commands make the outer ring warm. "Move left," Lark says. A channel glows beneath the copper rope.

*Isla* The blue-white line reaches the nearest blackpine and stops. Every horse feels it. The gray mare jerks the reins through Sava's hand. Rovan's mount rears. One of the pack sledges slides backward before Torven drives a brake pin through the runner. "Hold the trail," Maeven orders. Nobody advances. I stand beside a flat stone with my brace newly tightened and my left leg unwilling to bend. The ward-light flickers across the next tree, following a streak of warm ash on its bark. It has no source I can see. That means the source is beneath us. "Do not touch the trees," I say. Maeven's nearest scout already has one gloved hand extended. She stops. Caelen moves between me and the lit path. "Can you locate the stone?" "Not while you are blocking everything." His shoulders lower by a fraction. He steps aside. The trail ahead curves around a steep bank. Blackpine roots knot through the soil on our right. To the left, the ground falls toward a frozen stream. The northbound

*Isla* Copper rope seems heavier before sunrise. Torven drops the third coil onto a pack sledge and swears at it. The rope does not apologize. It settles beside two ward chisels, a box of iron pins, and enough lamp oil to burn the Academy's north wall. Sava rearranges everything. "The oil travels on the second sledge." "It fits here," Torven says. "It also leaks. Copper carries residue." "The bottles are sealed." "One is cracked." Torven checks. One is cracked. He looks offended by her accuracy. The Academy stable yard churns with mud, hooves, and visible distrust. Nightshade loads the sledges while Maeven's Fennec escorts inspect every tool we add. Cedric records each item twice, once for the Academy officers and once for the alliance copy. No Academy escort joins us. The acting officers describe this as respect for Nightshade's independent standing. The March representative describes it, in a written objection delivered before dawn, as proof that the Academy cannot con

*Isla* Elder Maeven claims the Academy council table by placing six iron seals on it. The Academy officers do not surrender the room. They retreat to the wall and pretend the distinction matters. Maeven stands at the head of the table in a gray traveling coat, rain still shining on the shoulders. Her hair is braided tightly against her skull. A thin white scar crosses the bridge of her nose. She has Caelen's eyes and none of his softness. Her gaze goes first to his right wrist. Bare skin. Pale scars. No Fennec oath band. Then she looks at me. "So," she says. "The forbidden bond has a face." "I have several," I reply. "This one is for meetings." Caelen's hand hovers at the small of my back as he draws out my chair. I lean into the touch before sitting. Maeven watches that too. Cedric takes the place opposite her with two ledgers, four sharpened pens, and enough witness slips to survive a minor war. Lark sits beside him. Rovan remains behind Maeven's right shoulder, throat gu
