*Isla*

The kettle starts to sing.

Not a full boil yet, but close. Tiny, furious bubbles tick against the iron while smoke stings my eyes and the wind worries at the edge of the fire. Down the slope, Cedric's voice cuts through the morning sharp enough to turn heads.

"Stay back. I said stay back."

I rise before I mean to. Instinct. Stupidity. Same thing most days.

Two stations below, Sena is on the ground beside a scatter of split wood, clutching her ankle with both hands. Bran is swearing. Lark

  • The crippled omega warrior girl    Sava’s whole map

*Isla* The red page is not a page. Sava unfolds the first quarter. Then the second. Narrow seams release along the edges, opening the sheet until it covers half the hide map beneath it. Lines cross the red surface in black ink. Most stop at the edges without explanation. Some end in small squares. Others vanish beneath smears of dried bitter-seed oil. Cedric leans closer. Sava puts a knife between his hand and the paper. "No touching." "I was not touching." "You were preparing to." "I was reading." "Read from farther away." He does. Caelen remains beside me, his hand around mine. The clean silver traces on our wrists glow faintly where our skin meets. His thumb passes once over my knuckle. Not reassurance. Confirmation. The second bell is less than an hour away. Miran is tied beneath the sanctuary. Thirty-one Fennec wolves lie unconscious across the mountain. Orla waits beside a curse-heart built from stolen consent and calls the arrangement arithmetic. Sava removes th

  • The crippled omega warrior girl    The oathwright’s offer

*Isla* Orla's hooked seal expands above the fox key. Blue light spills into the shallow basin at the center of our witness circle. It does not disturb the water. It replaces it. Stone walls rise from the reflection. An iron door. A man bound to a chair beneath it. Sava stops breathing. Miran sits with his wrists tied separately to stone arms. His left hand is wrapped in a black splint. Blood darkens the cloth around two fingers. One cheek is swollen. His shirt hangs loose on a body that has not eaten enough. He lifts his head. "Sava?" She takes one step toward the basin. Liora does not block her. Sava crouches at the circle's edge. Her controlled register disappears. "I'm here." Miran's mouth shifts. It may be a smile. It looks painful. "You took too long." "You look terrible." "You always exaggerate." He coughs before the last word finishes. The sound scrapes through the projection. Tomas moves closer, studying the blue image as if he can treat it by irritation al

  • The crippled omega warrior girl    Equal knowledge

*Isla* Caelen wakes because my pain is shaking through him. His eyes open on a gasp. We lie on separate blankets inside the blackpine overhang. The witness circle remains above us, copper lines cut, memory keys removed, chairs empty. Someone has placed my cane beside my right hand. Caelen is three feet away. His body trembles in time with mine. "Isla?" "Here." His gaze finds my open eyes. "Where is the pain?" "Everywhere." "That is not useful." "It is extremely accurate." He tries to sit. His arms fail. Tomas appears above him and presses one hand to his shoulder. "Do not." "I need to reach her." "She has not asked you to." Caelen goes still. The correction hurts him. He accepts it. Tomas crosses to me. His fingers check my throat, wrist, the skin beneath my eyes. I let him. Mostly because lifting a hand to object would require decisions. "Can you feel your feet?" he asks. "Yes." "Both?" I move the right. Pain answers from the left before the toes do. "Yes."

  • The crippled omega warrior girl    The stolen burden

*Isla* The white cloth lifts. Beneath it lies a pattern carved into bone-colored stone. Two channels curve toward each other. They cross once, separate, then cross again. The same shape left on our wrists after chosen touch. The same shape Nightshade measured. Clean resonance. Caelen feels my recognition. His arrives with it. The stranger beside the table places one finger on the first curve. "Ward blood," he says. He touches the second. "Witness blood." An oathwright stands behind him wearing the hooked seal. The mark is black against her pale collar. Her face is blurred by damaged memory, but her hands remain sharp. Ink stains both thumbs. "The children carry corruption faster than the border stones can release it," she says. "This counterform will draw excess through a second living current." The Fennec witnesses stand along the sanctuary wall. No iron bands yet. Their household keys lie beneath glass because the strangers have trapped them there. The woman holdin

  • The crippled omega warrior girl    Open resonance

*Isla* "Ask me again," I say. Caelen sits opposite me with his palm above the western copper plate. Three paces of black stone separate us. His right wrist is bare, the old scars visible beneath the loose lead. "Isla," he says. "Do you want to open your ward resonance to the memory keys with me?" "Yes." My voice does not shake. My hand does. I place it flat on the eastern plate. Nothing happens. The fox, river, and pine keys lie around the stolen relay fragment. Sava braces the black hook between two pieces of wood while Lark watches the shallow return groove. Bran holds the cut line. Tomas kneels outside the circle with one hand near my pulse cord and the other near Caelen's. Liora stands beside my guide rope. Maeven watches Caelen's open fingers. Cedric waits through four counts. "Caelen," I say. "Do you want to enter the same memory, without shielding me, directing me, or remaining outside what I see?" Fear passes through his face. "Yes." His palm settles onto the w

  • The crippled omega warrior girl    Circle of witnesses

*Isla* Cedric writes the stop terms three times. One copy for Nightshade. One for Fennec. One sealed inside an oilskin tube in case the mountain destroys the first two and leaves paperwork as the sole survivor. He reads every line aloud. "Either participant may revoke at any point, for any reason, without explanation." I sit on a flat stone beneath the blackpine overhang while Tomas rebuilds the support around my ankle. My new cane rests across my knees. It began as Torven's climbing staff. Sena cut it to fit my height. Bran wrapped the grip in dry leather. Lark carved two shallow grooves near the base so I can identify its direction in darkness. Nobody asked whether I wanted a cane. They asked what height. I hate how much easier that made the answer. Cedric continues. "Revocation takes effect immediately upon a spoken refusal, release of the copper loop, closure of either hand, failure to answer the fourth-count check, visible respiratory distress, loss of position, or o
