Chapter Seven: Breach

The alarm shattered the silence, and chaos followed a half-second behind it.

"Move," Damon barked, already pulling Aurora behind him as the study door burst open and Kieran shoved past to check the hallway, weapon drawn from somewhere Aurora hadn't even seen him reach for.

"Perimeter's been breached on the north side," Kieran called back. "Multiple intruders. They came in fast."

"How fast?" Noah demanded, already moving.

"Fast enough that the wards didn't catch them until they were already past the tree line."

Aurora's pulse pounded in her ears as Damon pressed the pendant back beneath his shirt and grabbed her arm, pulling her toward the hallway. "Stay behind me. Whatever happens, you do not leave my side."

"What about the stone?" Luca asked, already scooping it back into its box.

"Bring it," Damon said. "We are not leaving it behind for whoever's out there."

The house had gone fully dark, emergency lighting flickering weakly along the baseboards as the group moved through the corridors toward the reinforced safe room Noah had insisted on installing years ago, back when nobody thought they'd actually need it.

They didn't make it that far.

The first intruder dropped from the ceiling access panel directly into their path, moving with a speed that told Aurora immediately this wasn't ordinary pack security they were dealing with. Kieran reacted before she could even process what she was seeing, closing the distance in an instant, the sound of impact echoing down the hallway as the two bodies collided.

"Go," Kieran snarled, already locked in combat. "I've got this one."

Damon didn't hesitate, pulling Aurora forward, Ryder falling into step beside them while Luca brought up the rear with the box clutched tight against his chest. Noah split off toward the east wing, shouting orders into his comm to whatever remained of the pack's security team.

They rounded a corner and nearly collided with a second intruder, this one wearing a mask that covered everything except a pair of pale eyes that locked onto Aurora with unmistakable intent.

"There she is," the intruder said, voice muffled but clear enough. "Just like they said."

Ryder moved first, tackling the man before he could take a single step closer, the two of them crashing through a side table that shattered beneath the impact. Aurora flinched, but Damon's grip on her arm never loosened, pulling her past the struggle and further down the corridor.

"How many people know about that stone?" Aurora asked breathlessly as they ran.

"Not enough for this," Damon said. "Which means someone talked. Recently."

The safe room door came into view at the end of the hall, reinforced steel gleaming faintly in the emergency lighting. Damon punched in the access code with one hand, still gripping Aurora with the other, and the door hissed open just as a third figure emerged from the shadows behind them, moving with terrifying precision.

"Damon—" Aurora started, but he'd already turned, shoving her through the doorway toward Luca.

"Get her inside," he ordered. "Now."

"What about you?" Aurora shouted, fighting against Luca's hold as he pulled her fully into the room.

Damon didn't answer. He turned to face the intruder head-on, and the last thing Aurora saw before the heavy door swung shut between them was Damon's eyes flashing gold, fully shifted in an instant, teeth bared, prepared to fight whoever had come for her.

The door sealed with a heavy, final clang.

"No," Aurora said, pounding against the steel. "Open it. Open it now."

"We can't," Luca said, pulling her back gently despite her struggling. "The seal's on a timer once it's engaged. Ten minutes minimum, for exactly this kind of situation."

"He's out there alone."

"He's not alone," Luca said, though his voice betrayed his own worry. "Kieran, Ryder, Noah, they're all still out there too."

Ten minutes had never felt so long in her entire life. Aurora sat against the cold steel wall, straining to hear anything beyond it, every distant crash and muffled shout sending her heart into her throat. Luca stayed close, the box with the stone held tightly in his lap, occasionally glancing toward the door himself with an expression far less composed than usual.

"Luca," Aurora said quietly, somewhere around minute seven. "If something happens to them—"

"It won't," he said, though it sounded like he was trying to convince himself as much as her.

The timer finally clicked over, the seal releasing with a heavy hiss. Aurora was on her feet and through the door before Luca could stop her, running back down the corridor toward the last place she'd seen Damon.

She found him kneeling on the floor near the shattered remains of the side table, breathing hard, blood running from a gash along his forearm, but alive. Ryder leaned against the wall a few feet away, favoring one leg but upright. Kieran emerged from a side hallway a moment later, dragging an unconscious intruder behind him.

"Where's the third one?" Aurora asked, relief and panic tangled together in her chest.

Damon looked up at her, something dark and unreadable in his expression.

"Gone," he said. "He got away. With something."

"With what?" Aurora asked, though the sinking feeling in her stomach already told her she wasn't going to like the answer.

Damon held up his hand, revealing the broken chain still clutched in his fingers, the pendant that had hung around his neck for nine years now gone entirely.

"He took the key," Damon said grimly. "Which means whatever the stone is meant to unlock, someone out there now has the only thing capable of opening it."

Chapter Eight: The Name Behind the Attack The unconscious intruder woke up strapped to a chair in the estate's basement an hour later, and refused to say a single word for the first twenty minutes of questioning. Aurora stood behind the two-way glass with Noah, watching Kieran and Damon work the room with a patience that felt anything but reassuring. "He's not talking," Noah said, arms crossed tightly over his chest. "He will," Aurora said. "You sound very sure of that." "I've watched Kieran train for eleven years. I know what patience looks like right before it runs out." As if summoned by her words, Kieran leaned down close to the man's ear and said something too quiet for the glass to carry. Whatever it was worked. The man's expression cracked, fear breaking through whatever bravado had held him together until now. "He's a mercenary," Damon reported when he finally stepped out of the room twenty minutes later, wiping blood from his knuckles that wasn't his own. "H

Chapter Six: What Was Inside the Box Luca didn't touch the box again. He stood there staring at it, gloves still on, like it might do something none of them could take back if he moved wrong. "We need to get this inside," Damon said finally. "Away from the gate, away from open ground." Nobody argued. Kieran scooped the box up carefully, cradling it the way a person carries something they don't trust, and the group moved back toward the house in a tight cluster around Aurora, eyes scanning the tree line the whole way. They gathered in the study, the same room where Damon had kept the photograph hidden days earlier. Luca set the box on the desk and stepped back, arms crossed, waiting. "Well?" Ryder said. "Somebody open it." "That's exactly what I don't want to do without knowing what's inside first," Luca said. "We already know something's inside," Kieran said. "We heard it move." "Which is exactly why I don't want to open it," Luca snapped back. Aurora stepped forwa

Chapter Five: A Face That Shouldn't Exist Nobody in the house slept that night. By the time the sun rose, the entire estate had been placed on lockdown, patrols doubled, every entrance monitored by at least one Alpha at all times. Noah paced the length of the kitchen so many times Aurora lost count, his phone pressed to his ear as he barked instructions to pack security she'd never even known existed. "You're certain," he said again, for what felt like the tenth time, before finally hanging up and dropping into a chair across from her. "The footage matches. Facial recognition confirms it." "Who is he?" Aurora asked, though something in her already suspected the answer wouldn't be simple. Noah rubbed his eyes, exhaustion pulling at every line of his face. "His name was Marcus Vale. He worked security for our parents, years ago. He died the same night they did, supposedly in the same accident." "Supposedly," Aurora repeated. "His body was never actually recovered," Noah

Chapter Four: Living Under One Roof The council's departure didn't ease the tension in the estate. If anything, it multiplied it, spreading through every hallway like smoke that refused to clear. Damon avoided her for the rest of the day. When Aurora finally cornered him near the training grounds that evening, arms crossed and refusing to move until he gave her answers, he simply said the matter was closed and walked away before she could argue further. "He's hiding something," she told Noah later that night, pacing the length of the study while her brother sat with his head in his hands. "You heard her. Sealed records. About our parents. And he knows something about it." "I'll talk to him," Noah said, though his voice lacked conviction. "But Aurora, right now we have a bigger problem. The council's given you thirty days, and until this is resolved, you're a target. For rival packs, for anyone who wants to exploit the situation, for anyone curious about what makes your blood

  • The five who were never meant to love me    Chapter 3

Chapter Three: The Council's Warning** By the time the sun rose fully over the pack house, word had already spread beyond the estate. Aurora could feel it in the way people avoided her eyes on the way to the dining hall, in the way conversations dropped the moment she entered a room. She had expected fear. She hadn't expected the way some of them looked at her like she was dangerous. "They're saying you're cursed," Noah told her flatly, setting a plate in front of her that she had no appetite for. "Someone from the eastern border pack already reached out. News like this doesn't stay contained." "Great," she muttered. "So on top of everything else, I'm apparently a curse now." "You're not a curse." Noah sat across from her, his voice gentler than before. "You're my sister. Whatever this is, we'll figure it out." She wanted to believe him. She wanted, more than anything, to believe that this was something that could simply be figured out, solved, put back into whatever box
