Chapter One: The Blood Moon

Aurora Hale stood at the edge of the training field, watching the pack gather for the festival. Every year the same event took place under the same sky, and every year she found a reason to stay near the back, away from the fire, away from the noise.

She was turning twenty tonight. Everyone kept reminding her, as if she could forget.

"You look like you're about to run," Ryder said, dropping down beside her on the wooden fence. He smelled like smoke and pine, the way he always did after training. "Relax. It's just a party."

"It's never just a party," Aurora said. "Not for me."

She had never shifted. Not once, not even on her eighteenth birthday when most wolves in the pack had already gone through their first change twice. The healers had stopped asking questions about it years ago. Noah had stopped bringing it up too, though she still caught him watching her sometimes, like he was waiting for something to happen that he refused to name out loud.

Ryder nudged her shoulder with his. "You'll shift when you're ready. No rush."

"Easy for you to say. You shifted at fourteen."

"I peaked early," he said, grinning. "Some of us are just gifted."

She rolled her eyes, but the corner of her mouth lifted anyway. Ryder had a way of making the heaviest nights feel lighter. He always had, since they were kids running through the same halls of the pack house, before he became Beta and she became the girl everyone protected but nobody explained anything to.

Across the field, Damon stood near the fire pit, arms crossed, watching the crowd the way he watched everything — like a threat could appear from any direction and he needed to be ready for it. He didn't look at her. He never looked at her directly anymore, not since she'd turned sixteen and he'd suddenly started keeping his distance, cold and formal, calling her Miss Hale in front of others even though he used to carry her on his shoulders when she was small.

She used to think it was because he didn't like her much. Now she wasn't sure what to think.

Kieran was near the tree line, saying nothing, watching the perimeter the way he always did during gatherings. He rarely joined the fire. He rarely joined anything. But every so often his eyes would move across the crowd and land on her for a second too long before shifting away.

Luca was seated at one of the long tables, going over something on a tablet even during a festival, because Luca never stopped working, never stopped calculating, never let himself enjoy a single moment without measuring the cost of it first.

Elias wasn't there. He hadn't been there in three years.

"Where's your brother?" Ryder asked, glancing around.

"Talking to the council rep. Something about border patrols." Aurora shrugged. "He said he'd be here before midnight."

Ryder checked the sky. The moon was already turning a deep shade of red, the kind of red that only came once every few decades, the kind old wolves whispered about like it meant something more than just a color.

"You feel anything weird tonight?" Ryder asked, and for the first time his voice lost its usual teasing edge.

Aurora frowned. "What do you mean?"

"Nothing. Forget it." He stood, offering her a hand. "Come on. Dance with me before Kieran decides tonight's the night he finally learns how."

She laughed despite herself and let him pull her toward the fire.

The music grew louder as more of the pack arrived. Firelight moved across faces she'd known her whole life, and for a while she almost forgot to be nervous. Ryder spun her once, twice, and she laughed harder than she had in weeks. Somewhere behind her she felt eyes on her back, steady and unmoving, and when she turned she caught Damon watching, his jaw tight, before he looked away again.

Then the moon shifted overhead, fully red now, hanging low and heavy over the trees, and a strange pull settled into her chest.

It started as warmth. Then it became pressure, tightening beneath her ribs like something trying to break free from the inside. Aurora stumbled, gripping Ryder's arm.

"Aurora?"

"Something's wrong," she said, breath catching. The pressure spread through her limbs, hot and sharp, and the world around her seemed to blur at the edges. Voices dimmed. The fire dimmed. All she could hear was her own pulse, loud and wrong, pounding faster than it should.

Ryder caught her as her knees buckled. "Someone get Noah. Now."

But it was too late for that.

Her spine arched. Bones shifted beneath her skin with a sound that made several nearby wolves recoil. Aurora screamed, and the scream turned into something else entirely, something between a howl and a cry, as her body twisted and reshaped itself for the very first time.

Fur the color of moonlight spread across her skin. Her limbs elongated. Within seconds, where a fragile human girl had stood, a wolf unlike anything the pack had seen in generations now crouched on the grass, eyes glowing silver instead of the pale gray they'd always been.

The entire festival went silent.

Then, one by one, five men staggered as if struck.

Damon dropped his cup, his whole body going rigid. Ryder grabbed the fence to steady himself, eyes wide with shock. Kieran let out a low, involuntary growl from the tree line. Luca's tablet slipped from his hands and shattered on the ground, forgotten. And somewhere beyond the gates, though no one could explain how they knew it in that instant, Elias Thorn stopped walking, gripped by a pull he hadn't felt in years.

Five mate bonds. Igniting at once.

For the same woman.

It had never happened. Not once, not in any record the pack elders could recall, not in any story passed down through centuries of wolf history. A single mate bond was rare enough to be treated as sacred. Five, simultaneously, for one soul, wasn't just unheard of.

It was forbidden.

Noah arrived just in time to see his sister's wolf form collapse back into her human shape, unconscious, her skin pale and slick with sweat. He rushed forward, catching her before she hit the ground, and looked up at his four closest friends standing frozen around her, expressions caught between hunger and horror.

"What," Noah said slowly, voice shaking with something dangerously close to fury, "did you all just do."

None of them answered.

Because none of them understood it either.
