Kael didn’t sleep.

He lay staring at the ceiling, Liora’s warm body curled against his side, her breathing soft and even. Her hand rested on his chest—right over his heart—like even in sleep she was holding on.

The burner phone lay dark on the table.

But the message burned in his mind.

She dies at dawn unless you come alone.

The old warehouse.

The place where everything fell apart three years ago.

Vortigern wanted him alone. No Forgotten. No backup.

Kael’s jaw tightened.

It was a trap—obvious. But if he brought anyone, Vortigern would kill her instantly. The traitor inside their group had already proven that much.

He turned his head and studied Liora’s face.

Peaceful. Lips slightly parted. She looked younger like this. Like the girl he fell in love with before secrets and blood tore everything apart.

His chest ached.

He couldn’t lose her again.

Not now.

Not when they’d just found each other.

---

Kael slipped out of bed slowly.

Careful. Silent.

She shifted slightly but didn’t wake.

He dressed in the dark—black pants, shirt, boots. Knives strapped where they wouldn’t show. A gun tucked into his waistband.

At the door, he stopped.

Looked back.

---

A memory hit him hard.

Last night. After the rescue.

The moment the door closed, Liora had pushed him back against it, kissing him like she was afraid he’d vanish again.

“I was so scared,” she whispered between kisses. “Thought I’d lose you.”

He’d lifted her easily, her legs wrapping around his waist, carried her to the bed without breaking the kiss.

Laid her down. Took his time.

Kissed every inch—neck, breasts, stomach.

Hands cupping her full breasts, thumbs rubbing her nipples while his mouth moved from one to the other, slow and hungry. Her moans had filled the room, fingers tangled in his hair.

“Kael… please…”

He’d gone lower, teasing her until she shook apart, crying his name.

Then inside her—deep, hard thrusts. Her legs tight around him, nails scratching his back.

He remembered gripping her breasts again as he moved, watching her face lose itself completely.

They came together, clinging so tight it almost hurt.

After, she’d whispered, smiling soft against his chest:

“We’re finally free.”

---

Back in the quiet room, Kael’s eyes burned.

He knelt beside the bed, brushed her hair from her face, kissed her forehead gently.

“I love you,” he whispered. “I’ll fix this.”

He left a note on the pillow. Short. Honest.

Had to go alone.

Keep Ethan safe.

If I don’t come back… live happy.

You deserve it.

Then he slipped out.

---

The rain had stopped—for once.

Dawn broke gray and heavy.

Kael walked the empty streets alone, wolf senses sharp. No one followed. He made sure.

The warehouse rose ahead—rusted doors, broken windows, cliffs behind it. The river below smelled of cold water and old blood.

The place where everything ended.

And where it would finish.

He walked straight in. Hands open.

At first—nothing.

Just echoes of his boots.

Then the lights snapped on.

---

Vortigern stood in the center, sword in hand. Ten men spread around him, guns raised.

But no Liora.

Kael’s heart slowed.

“Where is she?”

Vortigern smiled slowly. “Safe. For now.”

Kael growled low. “You said—”

“I said come alone,” Vortigern interrupted. “You did. Good pup.”

He nodded toward a side door.

It opened.

Liora was shoved inside—hands tied, mouth gagged. Eyes wide with fear.

Behind her stood Jax.

One of the Forgotten.

Gun pressed to her head.

Kael’s blood boiled.

“You bastard,” he snarled.

Jax shrugged. “Vortigern pays better.”

Liora shook her head frantically, tears falling, muffled sounds trying to warn him.

Vortigern laughed. “She woke up, found your note. Fought hard. But we were waiting.”

Kael’s fists clenched.

He’d walked straight into it.

---

“Now,” Vortigern said calmly. “Fight me fair. No full shifting.”

He smiled. “Win—you take her and go. Lose—she watches you die slow. Then joins you.”

The men stepped back, forming a wide circle.

Kael looked at Liora.

Her eyes begged him no.

He nodded once anyway.

I’ve got this.

---

Vortigern struck first.

The sword flashed.

Kael dodged, claws half-out, countered with a slash.

The fight was brutal—steel against bone.

Blood came fast.

Kael’s arm split open.

Vortigern’s side ripped deep.

They circled, breathing hard.

“You’re weaker than your father,” Vortigern spat.

Kael snarled and lunged harder.

Claws raked Vortigern’s chest. Blood poured.

For one second—Kael thought it was over.

---

Gunshot.

Pain exploded through Kael’s back.

He dropped to his knees, choking.

Jax stood behind him, gun smoking. Smiling.

“Fair fight?” Kael gasped, blood filling his mouth.

Vortigern stepped forward, pressing a hand to his wound.

“I lied.”

He raised the sword.

Behind him, Liora screamed into the gag, fighting hard.

Kael looked at her.

Their eyes locked.

“I love you,” he mouthed.

---

The sword came down—

Engines roared.

Doors exploded inward.

Gunfire tore through the room.

“Kira!” someone shouted.

The Forgotten stormed in, bullets flying.

Kira’s voice cut through the chaos. “He left a second note hidden! Told us the plan!”

Men dropped.

Kael rolled weakly, grabbed a fallen knife, and threw it with everything he had.

It hit Jax in the throat.

Jax fell, gurgling.

---

Vortigern ran.

Toward the back. Toward the cliffs.

Kael staggered after him, blood soaking his shirt.

Liora was free now—Kira had cut her loose.

She ran to Kael and caught him as he fell.

“No! Kael!”

He smiled weakly. “Go… get him…”

She pressed her hand to his wound, sobbing. “Not without you!”

Kira shouted, “We’ve got the men—go!”

---

They reached the cliff edge.

Rain started again.

Vortigern stood there, bleeding badly, sword shaking in his hand.

“End of the line,” he gasped.

Kael gently pushed Liora back.

Straightened—wounded, but unbroken.

“For my family,” he said low.

He lunged.

Final clash.

Claws met sword.

Kael twisted—disarmed him.

Grabbed Vortigern by the throat.

Lifted.

And threw him over the edge.

The scream echoed—then a distant splash.

Gone.

---

Kael collapsed to his knees.

Liora caught him, sobbing. “You did it. It’s over.”

He held her weakly. “We did.”

The Forgotten rushed up.

Kira smiled. “Let’s get you patched.”

But as they helped him back inside, Kael’s vision blurred.

Too much blood.

He looked at Liora—rain and tears streaking her face.

“Don’t cry,” he whispered. “We’re free now.”

She kissed him softly. “Stay with me.”

Darkness closed in.

But her voice followed him.

“I love you. Come back to me.”

Kael was supposed to be asleep, but he crept to the top of the stairs to listen. His mom, Elara, was talking worriedly with his dad in the large living room below. “They wouldn’t dare attack us here,” his dad said, his voice deep and sure. “Not in our own home.” His mom sounded scared.
