Eva’s POV

The heavy silence in the study was shattered by slow, deliberate footsteps coming straight toward the far alcove.

My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. He knows I am here.

Before I could even attempt to shrink further into the dark shadows behind the mahogany bookshelf, a strong hand reached into the corner, gripping my arm and pulling me effortlessly into the light.

"Playing hide-and-seek with me, wife?" Lucian murmured, his dark blue eyes glinting with a dangerous, amused glint.

"Don't touch me!" I snapped, slapping his hand away from my arm with a sharp crack.

Lucian’s eyebrows shot up in mild surprise. His eyes drifted down to my right hand, catching the crisp white edge of the parchment I was clutching tightly against my dress. His expression instantly darkened.

"How dare you?" His voice dropped into a low, icy growl as he stepped closer, towering over me. "Why are you going through my private files?"

"I was not going through your stuff!" I shouted back, stepping right into his space, refusing to back down. "I came to the library looking for a book to read! I happened to find this document sticking out of a folder without proper care! Did you honestly think I wouldn't look when my own name was written on it?"

Lucian let out a short, mocking laugh, leaning against the edge of his desk and folding his arms across his bare chest. "What did you expect to find, Eva? Of course our marriage is an arrangement. What, did you think we were hopelessly in love with each other?"

"What leverage do you have on me?" I demanded, my breath coming in hot, angry gasps. "What did you threaten me with to make me agree to this paper?"

Lucian tilted his head, studying my face with a cool, calculating look. "You truly don't remember?" He smirked bitterly. "Ah, right. The convenient memory loss."

He turned on his heel, casually walking toward his desk as if the conversation were over.

Incensed, I darted around his desk and planted myself directly in his path, blocking him. "I am not joking with you, Lucian! Speak to me and tell me the exact leverage you used against me!"

Lucian stopped a breath away from me. Instead of getting angry, a sudden, slow smile spread across his handsome face. He leaned down slightly, his blue eyes sparkling with a dark, captivating charm.

"Ah... now there is the real you."

I frowned, caught off guard. "What are you talking about?"

"Ever since you woke up with no memory, you have been so quiet, so gentle, so remarkably calm," Lucian murmured, his voice smooth and intoxicating as he took a step closer, crowding me against the mahogany wood. "The real Eva is feisty. High-spirited. Dangerous."

"That is so not what I am talking about!" I huffed, pushing against his firm chest, though he barely budged. "Tell me the leverage!"

"If I tell you the leverage," Lucian purred, a playful edge dancing in his voice despite the coldness in his eyes, "what power would I have left over you?"

"It shouldn't matter if I know or not!" I argued fiercely. "The contract is already signed!"

"You are a very smart girl, Eva," Lucian whispered, reaching out to catch a loose black curl near my cheek, his fingers brushing warm against my skin. "And I certainly do not trust you enough to give you a weapon. So until this contract ends in a year, I will not tell you. Not unless you manage to remember it all on your own."

"You are a terrible, despicable person," I spat, glaring up into his striking face. "You know that, right? How could you choose a fake, manipulative arrangement instead of marrying a beautiful, high-born lady like Genevieve?"

Lucian burst into a sudden, genuine laugh, shaking his head. "I believe you were hiding behind that shelf long enough to hear what the maid just told me about your precious Genevieve."

I crossed my arms tight over my chest, turning my chin up. "Laura is a liar. She does not like me, she never did that i remember."

"Is that so? i wonder why" Lucian asked, stepping closer still, his eyes scanning my face with a mixture of amusement and intense curiosity. He looked like a predator thoroughly enjoying the sudden, fiery spirit of his prey.

Before he could speak another word, a heavy knock sounded at the study door.

"Lord Lucian," a footman called out from the hallway. "Her Grace, the Duchess, requests your presence in the drawing room immediately."

Lucian let out a soft, resigned sigh, stepping back and breaking the electric pull between us. He buttoned up his shirt, adjusting his collar with smooth, practiced grace, never taking his eyes off me.

"Duty calls, my fiery wife," he murmured with a dark, charming smirk. "Do try not to tear my library apart while I am gone."

Lucian’s POV

I smoothed my cuffs as I stepped into my mother’s lavish morning parlor.

The moment the oak door closed behind me, Duchess Eleanor rose from her velvet chaise. She glided across the Turkish rug, wrapping her arms around me in a tight, affectionate embrace.

"Mother," I murmured, resting a hand on her shoulder as she pulled back. "Is everything alright?"

"I heard Miss Bella is back in town," she said, her voice dropping into a solemn whisper as she held my gaze.

I didn't flinch, though a dark, cynical spark flickered in my chest. "News travels fast in Valenridge, I see."

Eleanor took my hand, guiding me over to a pair of upholstered armchairs near the hearth. She sat, her face lined with genuine maternal concern as she squeezed my fingers. "How are you feeling, Lucian? I know you must be deeply shaken. You are certainly unhappy to see her after... well, after everything."

I opened my mouth to offer a noncommittal response, but my mother cut in, her eyes shining with quiet guilt.

"Is that why you did not spend the night with Eva?" she asked softly. "Because you saw her at the ball? I swear to you, Lucian, I had no idea she would dare show her face at the wedding. Had I known, I would have banned her from the estate grounds entirely."

A cold, calculating stillness settled over me.

So, she knows I missed my wedding night.

My mind worked rapidly, stringing together the implication. Were the maids reporting my movements to her? Was she keeping a guard on the bridal suite? I realized in that sharp second that if I wanted to keep my mother from meddling in my affairs—or digging deeper into where I actually went—I needed to play along with the tragic narrative she had just handed me.

I let out a slow, heavy breath, lowering my eyes to fake a subtle, lingering pain.

"Of course, Mother," I murmured, leaning back with a quiet sigh. "It was... a great deal to take in when I saw her face at the altar, considering our entire history. But it is fine. Time moves on, and we have both grown. It is all firmly in the past."

"Oh, my sweet boy," Eleanor softened, reaching out to pat my knee. "I am so sorry you had to endure that on your special day. But you must make sure you spend the night with Eva tonight, do you hear me? You know how desperately I want legitimate grandchildren running through these halls."

I couldn't stop the smooth, roguish smirk from curving my lips. "Well... you could always easily get those from Leo."

I stood up, adjusting my lapels as a low chuckle escaped my throat.

"Nonsense, Lucian!" Eleanor huffed, waving her hand in absolute horror, though a faint smile tugged at her lips. "If Leo ever dares bring a child into this house out of wedlock, I do not care if the girl is a commoner or a woman off the streets—he will wed her before I ever acknowledge the child!"

"Well, he is your son," I offered smoothly, a glint of amusement in my eyes. "He takes after your fiery nature."

Eleanor sighed, her expression shifting back to gentle concern. "Have the two of you still not spoken properly? Have you sorted out your argument?"

"It is hardly the first time Leo and I have gone silent after a quarrel, Mother," I replied casually.

"Yes, that is true," Eleanor murmured, leaning back against her cushions, her eyebrows knitting together. "But usually I know why you boys are at each other's throats. I do not know the cause of this particular fight... and that makes me a bit worried."

I stepped forward, taking her hand once more and pressing a polite, affectionate kiss to her knuckles.

"Do not worry yourself, Mother," I murmured with practiced, aristocratic charm. "Everything is under control. Have a wonderful rest of your day."

I turned and walked out of her chambers, the warm smile fading from my face the moment the heavy oak doors shut behind me.

Let my mother believe I was a brooding, heart-broken groom overwhelmed by the ghost of a past tragedy. It was a far safer narrative than the truth—that I was playing a game so dark and complex, even the woman who raised me couldn't be allowed to see the board.

  • The lords' maid   CHAPTER 57: UNRAVELED SECRETS

Eva’s POV I pressed my back flat against the cool stone wall of the alcove, holding my breath as Laura passed by. Her heavy silk skirts rustled against the floorboards before her footsteps finally faded down the corridor. Once the coast was clear, I looked down at the velvet cushion and parchment ledgers in my arms—the preparations for the gala would simply have to wait. I dropped the stack onto a nearby side table, turned on my heel, and quietly trailed after the guard Laura had instructed. I kept a discreet distance, watching him navigate the long passage toward the courtyard doors. I needed those letters. If Laura was plotting something against me—or against the family—I couldn't afford to remain in the dark. "You there! Halt," I called out, keeping my voice authoritative yet calm as I closed the distance between us. The guard stopped immediately, turning around and bowing his head. "My Lady? How may I assist you?" "I need your help with an urgent matter regarding

  • The lords' maid   CHAPTER 56: VOWS IN THE SHADOWS

Lady Eleanor’s POV The estate was wrapped in a suffocating, pitch-black silence. Slipping out of the grand bed, I made sure Arthur’s rhythmic breathing remained undisturbed before wrapping a dark woolen cloak over my shoulders. My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird as I crept down the back servants' stairs, slipping out into the cool, damp night air. I moved quickly toward the quiet edge of the courtyard, where the shadows swallowed the stone archways whole. A tall figure stepped out from the darkness. James. The moment his face came into view under the pale moonlight, the dam broke inside me. I rushed into his arms, burying my face into his chest as hot tears spilled down my cheeks. "James... oh, James, I am so sorry," I sobbed, my voice trembling with the heavy weight of my guilt. "I am so, so sorry I did this to us." James wrapped his arms around me tight, holding me against the chill of the night. He lifted a hand, gently wiping the tears from my cheeks

  • The lords' maid   CHAPTER 55: SHADOWS AND BARGAINS

Genevieve’s POV I didn't bother knocking. I simply pushed open the heavy mahogany doors to Leo’s private study and strode inside like I owned the place. Leo was sitting at his easel, shirtless, a smudge of dark charcoal dusting his collarbone. He froze, paintbrush suspended in mid-air, and glared at me over his shoulder with sheer annoyance. "Have you no bloody manners, Genevieve?" he snapped, grabbing a discarded tunic off the back of his chair and throwing it over his head. I leaned against the doorframe, folding my arms with a sly, triumphant smile. "Well, I used to... until I saw what you were trying to do with your brother's wife in the garden yesterday." Leo’s jaw tightened, his hazel eyes darkening instantly. "Are you going to keep dragging that out?" "I need a favor from you," I said, dropping the smug act and taking a step toward his desk. Leo let out a dry, bitter laugh, adjusting his shirt. "A favor? And why on earth would I do you a favor?" "Because you hav

  • The lords' maid   CHAPTER 54: FRAGILE ALIBIS

Lucian’s POVWarmth enveloped me before my eyes even opened. The heavy, suffocating paralysis had receded, leaving my body exhausted but functional once more. As my vision adjusted to the morning light filtering through the heavy drapes, I realized I was still on the hard floor, resting against someone. It was Eva. She was fast asleep, leaning against the side of the velvet armchair with her head tilted slightly toward mine.I stayed still for a long second, my gaze trailing over her features. Up close, without her sharp wit or guarded glares, she looked startlingly soft. Her dark lashes rested long against her cheeks, framing the fine, sculpted line of her jawline. I didn't mean to stare—I wasn't the kind of man to succumb to sentimentality—but I couldn't deny the striking composure of her face. Then reality hit me like a bucket of ice water. She saw everything. She had found me completely frozen, helpless, and hyperventilating on the floor. Anxiety spiked in my chest. Knowing

  • The lords' maid   CHAPTER 53: AN ANCHOR IN THE DARK

Eva’s POV The hallway outside Lucian’s bedchamber was quiet, but a lingering sense of unease pulled me toward his door. After the humiliating chaos in the garden with Leo and Genevieve, I needed to face him—to ground myself, or perhaps just to prove that I wasn't losing my mind. I pushed the heavy oak door open and stepped inside. The room was pitch-black, swallowed entirely by shadows. The fireplace had died down to faint, glowing embers, leaving the chamber cold and oppressive. Reaching for a match, I lit the wall sconces, allowing soft, amber light to flood the room. My gaze swept across the floor—and my heart instantly stopped. "Lucian?" I gasped. He was collapsed on the hardwood floor beside the velvet armchair. He wasn't moving. His body was completely still, his eyes wide, fixed unblinkingly on the dark ceiling above. Beside him lay the shattered remains of a glass, water pooling around the broken shards. Panic seized my chest. "Lucian! Lucian!" I rushed to his

  • The lords' maid   CHAPTER 52: FRAGILE ALIBIS

Eva’s POV Genevieve’s sharp voice cut through the dusk like a shattered blade, sending a cold, horrifying panic straight through my veins. I immediately scrambled away from Leo, pushing myself off the grass and stumbling to my feet. Leo stood up right beside me, smoothing down his coat with a hasty, awkward flick of his hands. The air between the three of us turned suffocatingly tense. Genevieve took a slow step closer, her hands placed on her hips, her expression a mix of sheer disbelief and growing peevishness. "That... is your brother's wife, My Lord," she spat, her eyes darting between Leo and me. "Have you both completely lost your senses?!" "No—no! That is not what happened at all!" I stammered, my voice trembling as heat rushed into my cheeks. "I tripped on the grass, and—and we just fell! It was an accident!" Genevieve raised a single, cynical eyebrow, her look making it abundantly clear that she didn't believe a word of my pathetic lie. Oh God. I couldn't even b
