Lucian’s POV

The clinking of silver cutlery against fine china was the only sound breaking the uneasy silence in the grand dining hall.

I sat at the head of the table, resting my chin on my hand as I watched the storm brewing beneath the surface. Sitting across from me was Miss Bella, her presence in the De Witt manor striking like a spark in a powder keg.

My mother sat stiffly beside my father, barely touching her soup. She despised Bella—a sharp, deep resentment stemming from the dark truth of what had transpired years ago. But my father remained entirely blissfully ignorant. I had begged my mother to keep the truth from him back then; I didn't want Bella ruined or destroyed by his iron fist. I had simply banished her from the estate instead.

My feelings for Bella were... complicated. A tangled, nameless knot of history and residual warmth. She was, after all, likely the only woman I had ever truly loved since I was a foolish teenage boy.

"This is my wife, Eva," I introduced smoothly, breaking the quiet as I gestured to the sharp-eyed woman seated to my left.

Bella offered a strained, delicate smile. "A pleasure, Lady Eva."

"It is so nice to meet you, Miss Bella," Eva replied, her voice smooth, dripping with polite composure. "I have heard so many... interesting stories about you from Lady Eleanor."

My mother choked slightly on her wine, coughing into a linen napkin, while I buried a dark chuckle behind my glass.

My father, oblivious to the knife-sharp undertones, turned to offer Bella a warm, booming grin. "Miss Bella has always been a beacon of grace and high standing in Valenridge. A true lady of breeding and refined class—traits that this estate used to take great pride in cultivating."

He cast a cold, disdainful glance toward Eva, taking a pointed sip of his wine. The message was loud and clear: a maid will never truly belong at this table.

Eva’s jaw tightened, her hands gripping her napkin under the table as a flicker of discomfort flashed across her eyes.

Before I could open my mouth to turn the knife on my father, Leo casually set his fork down, his tone dry and effortless. "It is a pity that breeding and class do not guarantee basic manners at the dining table, Father. Eva has managed the estate's ledgers with far more grace in a week than most high-born ladies manage in a lifetime."

The tension in the room instantly skyrocketed. My father’s eyes narrowed into slits at Leo, but the damage was done.

Eva glanced up, catching Leo's eyes across the long table. A faint, genuine smile of gratitude crossed her lips, sending a subtle nod toward my brother. Leo returned it with a quiet, reassuring tilt of his head.

I watched the quiet exchange, my fingers tightening around the stem of my crystal glass until my knuckles turned white.

Suddenly overwhelmed by the stifling atmosphere, Eva pushed her chair back, standing up from the table. "Excuse me. I will assist the maids with clearing the tea service in the parlor."

Without waiting for my father's permission, she turned and glided gracefully out of the dining hall, escaping the suffocation of the room—and leaving the lingering heat of my brother's protective gaze burning in her wake.

Eva’s POV

The heavy atmosphere of the dining hall felt like a tight knot in my chest, and I needed to escape it before I snapped at the Duke myself.

Walking down the cold stone hallway toward the kitchen with a stack of silver plates in my hands, my mind raced. The tension around that table had been suffocating. Lady Eleanor’s subtle hatred for Miss Bella had been impossible to miss, despite her attempt to play the polite host. There was a dark history there, and I knew I would have to ask the Duchess about it soon.

As I pushed through the heavy wooden doors of the kitchen, my eyes caught Laura sneaking out through the back scullery exit.

"Laura," I called out, setting the plates down on a wooden prep table. "May I speak with you?"

Laura paused in her tracks. She let out a heavy, exaggerated sigh before slowly turning around to face me, folding her arms over her apron.

"How may i help you my Lady?" Laura taunted, her voice dripping with artificial sweet poison. "Or should I still call you Eva? I truly do not know what the proper etiquette is for a former maid."

I took a slow step toward her, keeping my composure calm and unwavering. "I regained my memory. The part that involved you."

Laura raised an eyebrow, a cruel little smile touching her lips. "Well, it is absolute bliss to know I occupy so much importance in that little head of yours."

"What do you want, Laura?" I asked point-blank, crossing my arms.

She feigned utter innocence, blinking rapidly. "What do you mean, My Lady? What are you saying?"

"I heard what you told Lucian," I said, narrowing my eyes at her. "You told him that Lady Genevieve was the one who pushed me down the gallery stairs. Why did you say that? What exactly is your game?"

Laura scoffed, leaning her shoulder against the doorframe. "Why must you assume I am playing a game?"

"Because you do not like me," I replied instantly, stepping closer. "You have never liked me. So why would you suddenly confess the truth to protect someone you despise?"

"Well, I am positively thrilled that you can read between the lines and see just how much I utterly despise you," Laura sneered, dropping the sweet act entirely. "I was simply looking out for you."

"Looking out for me?" I echoed, letting out a sharp, cynical laugh. "I find that very hard to believe."

"It may shock that pretty head of yours to hear this," Laura whispered, stepping right into my personal space, "but not a lot of people are pleased that you married Lucian. Or that you are stepping into the shoes of the future Duchess."

"And Genevieve is one of them," I stated flatly.

Laura chuckled softly, taking a step backward toward the exit and bowing with mock reverence. "Well... I am simply a humble maid, Eva. I cannot possibly speak on matters involving two jolly old friends, can I? Now, if you will excuse me... Lady Eva."

She turned on her heel and slipped out into the cold afternoon air, leaving me standing alone in the quiet kitchen with a chilling realization settling deep in my bones.

  • The lords' maid   CHAPTER 57: UNRAVELED SECRETS

Eva’s POV I pressed my back flat against the cool stone wall of the alcove, holding my breath as Laura passed by. Her heavy silk skirts rustled against the floorboards before her footsteps finally faded down the corridor. Once the coast was clear, I looked down at the velvet cushion and parchment ledgers in my arms—the preparations for the gala would simply have to wait. I dropped the stack onto a nearby side table, turned on my heel, and quietly trailed after the guard Laura had instructed. I kept a discreet distance, watching him navigate the long passage toward the courtyard doors. I needed those letters. If Laura was plotting something against me—or against the family—I couldn't afford to remain in the dark. "You there! Halt," I called out, keeping my voice authoritative yet calm as I closed the distance between us. The guard stopped immediately, turning around and bowing his head. "My Lady? How may I assist you?" "I need your help with an urgent matter regarding

  • The lords' maid   CHAPTER 56: VOWS IN THE SHADOWS

Lady Eleanor’s POV The estate was wrapped in a suffocating, pitch-black silence. Slipping out of the grand bed, I made sure Arthur’s rhythmic breathing remained undisturbed before wrapping a dark woolen cloak over my shoulders. My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird as I crept down the back servants' stairs, slipping out into the cool, damp night air. I moved quickly toward the quiet edge of the courtyard, where the shadows swallowed the stone archways whole. A tall figure stepped out from the darkness. James. The moment his face came into view under the pale moonlight, the dam broke inside me. I rushed into his arms, burying my face into his chest as hot tears spilled down my cheeks. "James... oh, James, I am so sorry," I sobbed, my voice trembling with the heavy weight of my guilt. "I am so, so sorry I did this to us." James wrapped his arms around me tight, holding me against the chill of the night. He lifted a hand, gently wiping the tears from my cheeks

  • The lords' maid   CHAPTER 55: SHADOWS AND BARGAINS

Genevieve’s POV I didn't bother knocking. I simply pushed open the heavy mahogany doors to Leo’s private study and strode inside like I owned the place. Leo was sitting at his easel, shirtless, a smudge of dark charcoal dusting his collarbone. He froze, paintbrush suspended in mid-air, and glared at me over his shoulder with sheer annoyance. "Have you no bloody manners, Genevieve?" he snapped, grabbing a discarded tunic off the back of his chair and throwing it over his head. I leaned against the doorframe, folding my arms with a sly, triumphant smile. "Well, I used to... until I saw what you were trying to do with your brother's wife in the garden yesterday." Leo’s jaw tightened, his hazel eyes darkening instantly. "Are you going to keep dragging that out?" "I need a favor from you," I said, dropping the smug act and taking a step toward his desk. Leo let out a dry, bitter laugh, adjusting his shirt. "A favor? And why on earth would I do you a favor?" "Because you hav

  • The lords' maid   CHAPTER 54: FRAGILE ALIBIS

Lucian’s POVWarmth enveloped me before my eyes even opened. The heavy, suffocating paralysis had receded, leaving my body exhausted but functional once more. As my vision adjusted to the morning light filtering through the heavy drapes, I realized I was still on the hard floor, resting against someone. It was Eva. She was fast asleep, leaning against the side of the velvet armchair with her head tilted slightly toward mine.I stayed still for a long second, my gaze trailing over her features. Up close, without her sharp wit or guarded glares, she looked startlingly soft. Her dark lashes rested long against her cheeks, framing the fine, sculpted line of her jawline. I didn't mean to stare—I wasn't the kind of man to succumb to sentimentality—but I couldn't deny the striking composure of her face. Then reality hit me like a bucket of ice water. She saw everything. She had found me completely frozen, helpless, and hyperventilating on the floor. Anxiety spiked in my chest. Knowing

  • The lords' maid   CHAPTER 53: AN ANCHOR IN THE DARK

Eva’s POV The hallway outside Lucian’s bedchamber was quiet, but a lingering sense of unease pulled me toward his door. After the humiliating chaos in the garden with Leo and Genevieve, I needed to face him—to ground myself, or perhaps just to prove that I wasn't losing my mind. I pushed the heavy oak door open and stepped inside. The room was pitch-black, swallowed entirely by shadows. The fireplace had died down to faint, glowing embers, leaving the chamber cold and oppressive. Reaching for a match, I lit the wall sconces, allowing soft, amber light to flood the room. My gaze swept across the floor—and my heart instantly stopped. "Lucian?" I gasped. He was collapsed on the hardwood floor beside the velvet armchair. He wasn't moving. His body was completely still, his eyes wide, fixed unblinkingly on the dark ceiling above. Beside him lay the shattered remains of a glass, water pooling around the broken shards. Panic seized my chest. "Lucian! Lucian!" I rushed to his

  • The lords' maid   CHAPTER 52: FRAGILE ALIBIS

Eva’s POV Genevieve’s sharp voice cut through the dusk like a shattered blade, sending a cold, horrifying panic straight through my veins. I immediately scrambled away from Leo, pushing myself off the grass and stumbling to my feet. Leo stood up right beside me, smoothing down his coat with a hasty, awkward flick of his hands. The air between the three of us turned suffocatingly tense. Genevieve took a slow step closer, her hands placed on her hips, her expression a mix of sheer disbelief and growing peevishness. "That... is your brother's wife, My Lord," she spat, her eyes darting between Leo and me. "Have you both completely lost your senses?!" "No—no! That is not what happened at all!" I stammered, my voice trembling as heat rushed into my cheeks. "I tripped on the grass, and—and we just fell! It was an accident!" Genevieve raised a single, cynical eyebrow, her look making it abundantly clear that she didn't believe a word of my pathetic lie. Oh God. I couldn't even b
