Zareth’s POV

The hall didn’t empty much as dissolve.

Nobles peeled away in pairs and small groups already whispering before they reached the doors.

I heard fragments as they passed.

“The Moon Crown…”

“The bloodline…”

“A claimant.”

“War.”

No one lowered their voices enough.

No one cared if I heard.

I remained standing in the center of the ash circle long after everyone else had moved on smoke still curling around my ankles like the ritual hadn’t entirely released me.

The witch was the last to le

  • The lycan king’s regret     THE KING OF THORNWOOD

Kaelor met the King in the space between their lines his legs still shaking with exhaustion. James moved to follow. Kaelor said, "Stay back." The King was everything I expected him to be. Unhurried, precise, a man who had never once needed to shout to be obeyed. He said, "Your Majesty you look like a king whos had a month." Kaelor said, "I've had worse ". The King just smiled. He said, "Have you?" His gaze flicked to Kaelors cane. He said, "No I don't believe you have."Kaelor said, "Your daughter poisoned my sister and framed a woman for it. Your son led an assassination attempt against me. I'd say we've both had months Aldric." The Kings face didn't change,. I could sense a flicker of amusement behind his eyes.He said, "My daughter inherited my ambition. My son inherited his mothers conscience." It was a thing to say and it sent a shiver down my spine. Kaelor said, "You say that as though either excuses them " and the King just said, "No merely explains them."The King didn't flinc

  • The lycan king’s regret     THE DUEL

Zareths POVI screamed Kaelors name. The sound got lost in the noise of the battle. For one moment all I could see was history repeating itself.A ritual hall. A sentence passed. Kaelor standing helpless while I paid the price. This time we had traded places.Somehow that felt worse.Kaelors blade met Alexanders with a force that should have knocked him flat given how strength I knew he actually had left.Alexander saw it too.He said, "You are weaker than the reports suggested. You gave away half your life for her."Kaelor did not answer. His silence was answer enough.I pushed through the chaos shoving soldiers twice my size, my heart in my throat with every step that did not get me close enough fast enough.Someone grabbed my arm.He said, "Lady Zareth fall back!"I said, "No."He said, "You will die there!"I said, "Then I will die annoyed, about it!"I tore free before he could stop me.Sabriel cut through the crowd ahead of me claws already bloodied, driving off a Thornwood sold

  • The lycan king’s regret     WAR AT THE GATES

Kaelors POVI made it back to Ashbourne two days before Thornwoods forces arrived. The ride was hard on me. My wolf is still not back to normal. I had to hide how much I was struggling. Twice during the journey I woke up to James calling my name. I was scared. My wolf was silent. That frightened me more, than anything else. The healer told me "You should not be giving orders in your state " and I let him say it because arguing would have used up strength that I needed to save for something more important."The ritual was successful " he said, his voice quieter now. ". Your Majesty your wolf has not started to heal at all. We should have seen some signs of it by now."James stood still beside me.I asked him "What if it does not heal?"The healer hesitated. Then he said, "Then Crescent Veil may have its king to survive a sacrifice ritual and lose his wolf forever."No one said anything after that.Zareth found me the night before the reports of Thornwoods advance scouts. We stood there

  • The lycan king’s regret     THE MOLE

Zareths POVThe letter arrived at Ashbourne before I could even process Alexanders warning. It felt like a punch to the gut.My father is the one who did this. He sold out Crescent Veils defenses to the kingdom that is trying to destroy it. I just stared at the page reading the words over and over hoping that somehow they would not be true.. They were. What hurts is not that he betrayed us. It is deep down I still hoped he would prove me wrong. My wolf is quiet like she is trying not to make me feel worse. She tells me that my father is not capable of doing the thing. I know that.. It still hurts.I told Mae about the letter. She was angry. " Course he did " she said. "Garrick only cares about himself." She was pacing back and forth like she was thinking about how to make him pay. "You know what the worst part is?" she said. "I am not even surprised." Neither was I.. That makes it worse.I asked Mae if my father ever cared about us. She stopped pacing and thought about it. "I think he

  • The lycan king’s regret     THE ATTACK

Kaelors POVWe had days, a week before Thornwoods forces reached striking distance. I spent every hour of it in council meetings I could barely sit upright through planning a defense with a wolf weak to trust in a real fight. The council chamber had grown quieter around me these few weeks. Not kinder just quieter.People stopped pretending not to notice when I needed a moment long to stand. They stopped pretending not to see James subtly repositioning chairs before I reached them or the way my hand occasionally tightened against the edge of a table when my legs threatened to give out beneath me.My wolf still answered when I called for him not immediately anymore. That frightened me more than I was willing to admit. James laid the scouting reports across my desk grimly. Their numbers are worse than the estimate he said. If they hit the pass before our reinforcements arrive we lose it outright.I scanned the reports my expression hardening with every line. There were troops than we had

  • The lycan king’s regret     THE KING'S VERDICT

Zareths POVThe news reached Ashbourne within a day. A rider came, exhausted and delivered the message.Thornwood was mobilizing. War was coming. The estate changed immediately. Servants moved faster guards. Messengers came and went at all hours. No one said it aloud. Everyone understood. This was no longer a dispute. This was becoming a battlefield."It's not my kingdom anymore " I said, trying to convince myself."They banished me. I don't owe Crescent Veil anything.""But Sabriels James is there and Kaelors there and he can barely stand " Mae said, sitting beside me. "Is that really who you're pretending not to care about?"This hit me harder than I wanted it to.Because the problem was not that she was wrong. The problem was that she was right.I didn't answer. I didn't have a response.Mae sighed. "You know what the worst part is?""What?""You're going to help them.""Probably.""You already decided three minutes ago."I hated when she knew me that well.Sabriel found me the mor
