[ SAMANTHA'S POV ]

This was the second day I have been locked inside this dark, freezing room. Two endless days of sitting in total blackness, listening to the heavy silence of the East Wing. Sophia was nowhere to be found. Usually, the kind maid would sneak in water or a warm blanket when David turned his back, but this time, the door hadn't opened once. David must have banned her from coming anywhere near this hallway. He'd even ordered the kitchen staff to skip my meals entirely, leaving me to starve in the cold until I learned my lesson.

He thought I was plotting against him. He thought I was secretly making deals with Julian Vance, his bitter business rival. He had no idea what Julian had actually whispered in my ear at the gala. Julian hadn't threatened me; he was far too calculating for that. He'd figured out that my marriage to David was a complete sham, a cold loveless marriage wrapped in fake smiles for the media. He saw right through the loving couple act we put on for the press and offered to help me destroy David, using my position to tear down the Kingsley empire for his own selfish interests. I hadn't agreed to anything, but I was still trapped between two ruthless, powerful dogs. David had forced me to smile for the cameras at the party, and now, driven by pure rage, possessiveness, and jealousy, he was treating me like a dangerous prisoner all over again.

The bitter cold of the unheated storage room and two full days without food or water finally broke my body's last defenses. It started with a violent shiver deep in my bones, my teeth chattering so hard my jaw throbbed with pain. Then came the fire. A sudden, scorching fever ripped through my blood, making my head pound with agony while my skin felt like it was pressed against solid ice. My vision swam in the dark, black spots dancing across the pitch-black space around me.

"Help..." I tried to call out, but my throat was bone-dry, rough as sandpaper. The word came out as nothing more than a weak, scratchy gasp.

I couldn't stay on the hard floor anymore. The cold wood was soaking up what little body heat I had left. Dragging my trembling body on my hands and knees, I slowly crawled toward the small washroom in the corner, desperately seeking a single drop of water from the tap to wet my cracked lips.

Every inch was an agonizing battle. My thin arms buckled beneath my weight, and my forehead slammed hard against the cold floor before I finally reached the bathroom doorway. I collapsed right across the icy ceramic tiles. My expensive designer dress pooled around me, useless against the freezing stone. My breath came in fast, shallow gasps, hot and ragged against the bitter, dusty air. I tried to reach my arm up to grab the edge of the sink, hoping to pull myself up, but my fingers were completely lifeless, falling limp against the hard surface. My strength was entirely gone. My body gave up the fight, and I lay there shivering, completely helpless on the cold tiles, slowly slipping into unconsciousness.

The darkness inside my head grew heavier with every passing second. I couldn't tell time anymore. Day turned into night, and night bled back into day, but inside the windowless storage study, everything was just one long suffocating shadow. The fever burned hotter behind my eyes, making my mind wander into strange, terrifying dreams. I saw David's cold eyes staring down at me in the car. I heard his voice echoing off the walls, reminding me that I was nothing, that I was just a ghost in his house, someone who didn't exist unless he wanted her to.

"You don't exist..." the voice whispered in my head, over and over, until it mixed with the heavy ringing in my ears.

I wanted to sleep. I wanted to let the cold take over so the burning in my skull would finally stop. My eyelids felt like iron weights, pressing down so tightly I couldn't even try to open them again. The shivering in my legs began to slow down, not because the cold was going away, but because my muscles didn't have the energy left to move. My breath got weaker, barely lifting my chest off the freezing tiles.

Then, somewhere far away, a tiny sound broke through the silent house. Heavy iron keys jangled softly in the corridor.

"Mr. Kingsley is out for the afternoon," Sophia's hushed, panicked voice whispered frantically in the dark hallway outside. "Hurry, we only have a few minutes before the head guard notices we left the kitchen!"

The sound of the lock turning felt like it took an eternity. The old iron key ground against the metal tumbler, giving a sharp, heavy click that vibrated through the floorboards. The heavy wooden door swung open with a slow, creaking groan. A bright beam of light from a flashlight cut through the thick darkness, illuminating the tiny specs of dust floating in the stagnant air.

"Miss Samantha?" Sophia called out nervously, her voice trembling as she stepped over the threshold with a hidden tray holding a bowl of soup and a bottle of water. "Miss Samantha, please answer me. I brought you something to eat..."

Sophia stopped dead in her tracks near the entrance. The flashlight beam wobbled wildly in her shaking hand, sweeping across the empty storage room, past the overturned chairs and dusty boxes, until the circle of white light landed on the open bathroom doorway.

"Oh my God!"

The metal tray slipped right out of her numb fingers, crashing hard onto the hardwood floor. The glass bottle shattered into pieces, and the  soup spilled everywhere. Sophia didn't care about the mess or the noise. She rushed frantically across the room, her shoes sliding on the soup, and dropped to her knees beside my limp body.

"Miss Samantha! Can you hear me? Please wake up!" Sophia cried out, her hands shaking as she reached down and pulled my heavy upper body up against her chest.

The instant her skin touched my forehead, she gasped in pure horror, pulling her hand back for a fraction of a second as if she'd touched a hot stove. "You're burning up! Oh Lord, you're completely burning up!"

I couldn't open my eyes to look at her. My eyelids felt like they were glued shut by the fever. My dry lips moved faintly, twitching as I tried to speak, but no real words came out as the heat continued to scorch my brain.

Sophia completely panicked, hot tears spilling down her face as she cupped my pale cheeks, trying desperately to shake me back to awareness. "Miss Samantha, stay with me! Please, you have to open your eyes!" Sophia sobbed, her voice echoing frantically against the cold bathroom walls. She looked back toward the open doorway, her voice turning into a desperate scream. "Somebody help us! Please! She's dying here! Help!"

But no one answered her cries. The long, dark hallway of the East Wing remained completely dead and silent, cut off from the rest of the world. I lay completely unresponsive in her arms, my pale body convulsing with weak shivers against the cold tiles, slipping deeper and deeper into the dark.

[ DAVID'S POV ]"You told me I don't exist. Why do you care who speaks to a ghost?"She really thought those pathetic, dramatic words were going to break me. She thought acting like a lifeless doll in the back of my car would make me feel guilty, soften my heart, or force me to back down. She was dead wrong. Nobody talked back to me like that. Nobody played cheap mind games with David Kingsley and walked away feeling victorious. I had spent years building an empire by crushing men who thought they were smarter than me, and I certainly wasn't going to let my own wife sit across from me and pretend she had any control in this relationship. The brief flash of surprise in my chest vanished in a split second, replaced by a solid wall of pure, unyielding ice. My cold, ruthless nature took over completely, pushing away any small trace of doubt. A dark, dangerous quiet settled over my face. My eyes narrowed into tight slits, freezing the remaining heat right out of the car's interior.I didn'

[ DAVID'S POV ]Julian’s last words kept playing on a loop in my head, loud and dirty, echoing over and over in my mind long after he turned his back and disappeared into the crowd. Are you sure she belongs to you, David? Because from where I'm standing, it looks like your little bird is already looking for a way out of the cage. Every time I remembered his voice, the anger in my chest got tighter until I could barely breathe.I stood perfectly still by the champagne fountain for a long minute, my jaw clamped so tight it hurt my head. I wanted nothing more than to grab Samantha and pull her away right then, but the cold truth forced me to stop. We were standing in a room full of hundreds of rich people, business partners, and reporters. One bad move, one angry action, and the news would ruin the Kingsley name by morning. I couldn't hurt her or make a scene in front of so many people. I had to wait. Every bit of the anger burning inside me had to stay hidden until we were totally alone

[ DAVID'S POV ]The conversation with the investors was a complete waste of my time. They kept droning on and on about quarterly numbers, shifting margins, and international logistics, but I couldn't focus on a single word coming out of their mouths. My attention was completely pulled away from the business talk, my eyes instinctively cutting across the crowded ballroom every few seconds, checking the far corner by the champagne fountain.Checking on Samantha.Leaving her alone by the fountain had been a calculated choice for the cameras, a way to let the press see her acting natural, but the second I pulled my hand away from her waist, I felt a strange, lingering irritation. Even as I stood surrounded by the city's top financial minds, my eyes kept tracking back to her through the small gaps in the moving crowd. I watched her pull a crystal flute from a silver tray, her small, tight movements telling me exactly how hard she was working to maintain that perfect, adoring smile for the

[ SAMANTHA'S POV ]David’s hand finally left my hip. The air hit the bare skin of my waist, instantly freezing."I have to talk to the investors. Wait here. I’ll be back," he said. His voice was a flat command, his dark eyes giving me one final warning look before he spun on his heel. He walked in the opposite direction of the main party, his broad shoulders cutting through the crowd as he headed toward a quieter side of the hall where a tight circle of investors stood holding their glasses. The moment his back turned, my fake smile completely crashed. The ballroom was insane filled with hundreds of wealthy people standing around in clusters, whispering and watching everything. I walked over to a massive, multi-tiered glass fountain bubbling in the corner, pouring expensive champagne into a glowing basin. Needing to look busy, I grabbed a crystal glass from the silver tray. I took a quick sip, the sharp liquid burning my dry throat, my eyes scanning the crowd as I tried to calm my ra

[ SAMANTHA'S POV ]The sharp click of heels against the shiny floor sounded like wolves closing in.I didn't turn around right away. I kept my eyes locked on the heavy silver fork in my hand. Slowly, I pushed the metal prongs into the strawberry pastry on my plate, splitting the crust open. A tiny drop of thick red syrup leaked out onto the silver. I lifted the piece to my mouth, chewed slowly, and forced myself to swallow it down past the huge, dry lump of nerves in my throat. I wasn't going to look rushed. I wasn't going to let them see me sweat."Well, well. Look what the cat dragged in."I swallowed, used a white cloth napkin to dab the corner of my lips, and spun around like I didn't have a single care in the world.Three girls blocked my path to the ballroom, standing shoulder-to-shoulder like a wall of expensive silk and glittering diamonds. The girl in the middle wore an emerald dress that fit her like snake skin. She had high cheekbones, perfect blonde hair, and a nasty smirk
