The second I gasped for air I knew the monster had failed.

Pain still burned through my neck but it faded fast. My eyes snapped open. The world rushed back with firelight and shadows. Aziel Nightbane stood frozen a few steps away. He stared down at me like I was a nightmare crawling out of the grave. My bones clicked back into place one by one. Skin pulled tight over the break. I sucked in a deep breath and felt the mate bond flare hot between us. It pulsed stronger than before and linked every beat of my heart to his.

Aziel lunged at me before I could sit up. His massive hand slammed me flat against the dirt. Claws ripped into my side. I cried out sharp and loud as blood poured hot over my ribs.

“What are you?” Aziel roared. His face twisted in pure fury. His golden eyes burned inches from mine. “You should be dead. Speak omega. Now.”

I gasped through the pain and gritted my teeth. The bond twisted everything. I felt a sharp echo stab into his own side at the same moment. He flinched but did not pull back. “Your end,” I whispered. I met his stare even as fire tore through me. “That is what I am. The bond will not let me stay dead. Every time you hurt me you feel it too. Did you notice that sting in your ribs just now? That is me fighting back.”

Aziel snarled and drove his claws deeper. “Liar. I have ended every false echo before you. None came back. Tell me how you are doing this. How are you healing?”

The pain made my vision spot but I forced the words out fast. “I do not know. It just happened. The bond links our life forces now. You felt it when you touched me. This one is different from anything you have known. Why do you think the prophecy picked me?”

He yanked his hand free and grabbed a fistful of my silver hair. He dragged me up to my knees. My scalp burned but I did not look away. “You think this makes you special?” he growled. His voice stayed low and dangerous. “Tell me your name again. I want to know what to remember when I find another way to end this.”

“Lior Vale,” I said through clenched teeth. “And you will remember it. The bond already shows me things about you. Your strength. Your centuries of rule. This connection feels alive in a way nothing else has.”

Aziel’s grip tightened in my hair. He pulled my head back so he could stare straight into my eyes. “Stronger? You are shaking right now. I feel your fear through this cursed thing. Your wolf is wild but it is still weak. Why will you not die like you should?”

“Because maybe I am the real one,” I shot back. My voice grew steadier than I felt. Blood trickled down my side but the wound was already closing. I could sense his shock through the bond. “You came here hunting me. You burned everything. And now look at you. This bond is locking us together. Every hit you give me comes back on you. Feel that weakness in your arm right now? That is from me. Keep hurting me and you will drag yourself down too.”

Aziel laughed but it sounded forced. “One omega will not change centuries of power. Warriors!” he called out without taking his eyes off me. Two of his men stepped closer from the shadows. Their faces looked pale. “Chain him. Wrists and ankles. Make it tight. This one does not die easy.”

I struggled as cold metal snapped around my wrists. “Wait. You do not have to do this. The bond is already linking us. Hurt me more and you hurt yourself. This is not like anything you faced before.”

Aziel grabbed my chained wrists and hauled me to my feet. “Shut your mouth. I have ruled these lands for centuries without weakness. One bond will not break me.” He threw me over his broad shoulder like I weighed nothing. My stomach pressed against his back and the bond surged again. It showed me flashes of his thoughts. My own fear mixed with his rage. A glimpse of hidden worry in him that he tried to hide.

His warriors stared in stunned silence as we passed. One of them muttered something low. “Alpha… he was dead. I saw it.”

“Quiet,” Aziel snapped. “Mount up. We ride back to the stronghold tonight. Say nothing of this to anyone yet.”

The horse ride through the dark forest felt endless. I bounced against his back with every step. The night air cooled the blood on my skin but the bond kept pulling at my mind. Trees blurred past under the moonlight.

“Why did you really come for me?” I asked him. My voice stayed low so only he could hear. “Be honest for once. Was it only the prophecy or do you feel something else when you look at me?”

Aziel’s hand tightened on the reins. “I came to end the threat. That is all. Do not read more into it.”

“But you feel it too right?” I pressed. I ignored the ache in my wrists. “The pull. Your heartbeat matching mine. I can sense your doubt now. What if this bond wants us to survive together instead of destroying each other?”

He shifted me higher on his shoulder. His fingers dug into my thigh. “Survive together? You are my prisoner now Lior Vale. Talk like that again and I will gag you. This changes nothing. I will find a way to break the bond.”

I twisted trying to see his face. “You mean torture me. Go ahead. The bond already shows me more every minute. Your power. The weight you carry. This connection feels deeper than anything you expected. Does it scare you that I healed so fast?”

“Enough,” he growled. His voice had a rough edge. “You know nothing about what it takes to rule an empire. I did what I had to for centuries. And I will do the same to you.”

The ride stretched on with more back and forth between us. Every word I spoke let the bond reveal more. His ancient strength. The heavy price of immortality. The way this true bond felt different and alive. I kept talking because it made him tense. It showed me cracks in his control.

By the time we reached the dark stone fortress the sky turned gray with dawn. Aziel carried me down a long set of stairs into the deepest part of the dungeons. The air grew cold and damp. He unlocked a heavy cell door and tossed me inside. I landed hard on the stone floor. My chains rattled loud in the quiet.

He stood outside the bars. He towered there in the shadows. His golden eyes locked on me again. “Sleep well little prey,” he said. His voice was low and full of promise. “Tomorrow the real pain begins. I will test this bond until it breaks.”

I pushed myself up to sit against the wall. I met his stare through the bars. “You say that like you are sure. But I felt your hesitation on the ride. This bond is already changing things Aziel. You could not kill me. What will you do when the whole world finds out you brought the prophecy home alive?”

Aziel gripped the bars for a moment. His knuckles turned white. “I will break you first. Then I will end this.” He turned and walked away but I caught the slight tension in his shoulders. The bond whispered he was not as sure as he sounded.

Alone in the dark I tested the chains. I pulled slow at first then harder. The metal groaned under my strength. My wolf stirred inside me stronger than it had ever been. Power hummed in my veins like it had been waiting for this moment. I leaned my head back against the cold stone and breathed slow.

The bond hummed back almost like it heard me. A warm pulse that felt like both warning and promise. Aziel was up there dealing with his empire but down here I felt myself waking up. The monster thought he had me trapped. He had no idea what he had really caught.

I closed my eyes and let the bond settle between us. This connection was not like the weak echoes of the past. It was real. It was ours. And it would change everything.

Aziel and Lior sat at the long table in the side hall with the senior captains. Plates of roasted meat, bread, and stewed roots sat in front of everyone, but few people ate with real hunger. The air felt careful, as if every word might tip something over. Ysolde sat near the middle of the table, her grey-threaded hair pulled back and her hands folded near her plate. She had spent the morning walking the lower halls, listening for the kind of rumors that spread after a tense gathering. Beside her sat Tova, younger but just as ranked, her posture alert even while seated. She had already reviewed the outer patrol lists before coming to the meal. Aziel broke a piece of bread and spoke first. “We meet the visitor at dawn. Limited people in the room. Rina and Sera outside. I want clear eyes on him the whole time.” Ysolde nodded. “That’s wise, Alpha. I walked the lower halls after last night’s gathering. The rumors are already moving. Some of the younger ones are questioning why we a

The tension from the hall followed them all the way to their chambers. Aziel closed the door behind them and let out a slow breath. The quiet of the private rooms felt heavy after the packed gathering. Lior walked straight toward the bathing room without speaking. His shoulders were still tight, the same way they had been from the moment the visitor first spoke. Aziel followed him. “You’re still on edge.” Lior began stripping off his clothes. “That man unsettled me the second I heard his voice. I don’t trust the word peace coming from his mouth.” Aziel started the water and tested the temperature with his hand. “Then we talk it through properly. Come. The water will help clear your head.” They stepped into the large stone bath together. Steam rose around them as the heat sank into their skin. For a while neither spoke. The only sounds were the soft movement of water and the distant noises of the fortress settling for the night. Aziel reached for a cloth and began washing

Mara, the senior healer, sat a few seats down. She kept her hands wrapped around a cup of warm water and her eyes moved slowly across the room. She said little, but she missed nothing. Aziel glanced at Lior. “Have you heard any of the news today?” “Bits and pieces,” Lior answered. “Some of the older warriors still wonder if shared rule will hold. Others are just tired. They want the silence from the other packs to mean safety, not a coming storm.” Aziel’s jaw tightened. “Silence never means safety. Not for long.” A younger warrior further down the table spoke up, voice respectful but uncertain. “Alpha, do you think the other packs will stay away now? After everything?” Aziel met the man’s eyes. “I think they’re deciding. Some will stay away out of fear. Some will come closer to test us. We stay ready either way.” Lior added quietly, “Fear can protect us for a while. But it can also make people desperate. Desperate people do dangerous things.” Sera looked between them. “T

“No,” Aziel said. “Silence never lasts. Not in this world. Packs that stay quiet are usually preparing something. Or waiting for someone else to move first.” Lior nodded. “That’s what I keep thinking. The tracks Rina found yesterday. They came to the border and turned away. That doesn’t feel like fear alone. It feels like measurement.” “They’re studying us,” Aziel agreed. “Trying to decide if the stories are true. If we stay quiet too long, someone will decide to test the truth for themselves.” Lior lifted the pan slightly to check the underside of the meat. “Then we stay ready. But we also keep these moments when we can. Otherwise the weight of everything will crush us.” Aziel watched him for a long moment. “You’re different from the person I first brought here. Not weaker. Just… more.” Lior glanced over his shoulder. “You’re different too. You used to look at me like I was a problem to solve. Now you look at me like this.” “Like what?” “Like you want to stay.” Aziel

“Or maybe they’re planning something larger,” Lior said. “Silence can mean many things.” They finished washing in thoughtful quiet. After drying off they dressed in simple clothes and moved to the small table near the window. Breakfast had already been set out: roasted meat, fresh bread, and a jug of water. They sat across from each other. Aziel tore a piece of bread and handed half to Lior. “Eat. We need to stay strong even if the world has gone quiet.” Lior took the bread but didn’t eat right away. “Do you regret it? The choice we made last night?” “No,” Aziel said without hesitation. “I meant every word. I still mean it. But the silence from the other packs makes me wonder what comes next.” Lior finally took a bite. “They’re watching. Waiting to see if the stories are true. If we stay quiet too long they might decide we are vulnerable.” Aziel poured water for both of them. “Or they might decide we are too dangerous to approach. Either way, we need to understand what’s h

An older warrior stepped forward. “What if the tests turn into attacks while you’re away? Who will be leading us?” “The senior captains,” Aziel said. “You already know the order. This isn’t a long absence. Two days. We’ll know of any real threat long before it gets here.” Lior spoke next, voice steady. “The fear outside is growing. That fear can protect us if we shape it. We won’t hide from it, and we won’t feed it with unnecessary blood. That’s the path we’re taking. Stand with it or speak now.” No one spoke. The warriors dispersed to prepare. Aziel and Lior returned to their chambers as the sun began to drop. Aziel shut the door. “The pack accepted it. One less thing to worry about. Be honest with me. How much does this growing fear actually bother you?” Lior sat on the edge of the bed. “Enough. Fear makes packs unpredictable. Some will submit. Some will try to prove they’re not afraid. We have to be ready for both. There’s already tension out there. Not close yet, but it’
