Chapter 5 — An Impossible Love

The evening sky was beginning to turn golden when Jack finally returned from work.

It had been a tiring day. Four special clients had brought their cars to the workshop, and they trusted no one but Jack to repair them personally. By the time he closed for the day, all he wanted was to get home, take a shower, eat something, and rest.

He drove through the familiar streets, already imagining himself stretched out on his small sofa with the television playing in the background.

But as he turned into his street, something caught his attention.

A woman was standing outside his compound.

Jack slowed down.

As his car drew closer, he recognized her.

Emelda.

His expression changed immediately.

“What is she doing here?”

He parked near the gate and stepped out.

Emelda smiled when she saw him.

“I've been waiting for you.”

Jack stared at her. “Why?”

“I need to talk to you.”

“You should have called.”

“I did. You didn't answer.”

“I was at work.”

“I know. But I wanted to speak to you face-to-face.”

Jack opened the gate but remained outside.

“Whatever you want to say, say it now.”

“Can I come inside?”

“No.”

Her smile disappeared.

“Jack, please.”

“I don't think that's necessary.”

Emelda looked at him with hurt in her eyes.

“Why are you treating me like this?”

“Because I already know why you're here.”

She folded her arms. “Then tell me.”

“You've been making advances at me, Emelda. I've ignored it because I didn't want to embarrass you. But you know I'm with Jennifer. I need you to stop.”

“I don't know what you're talking about.”

“Don't pretend. You keep finding reasons to see me, and now you're waiting outside my house.”

Emelda sighed.

“I only want to talk.”

“And I've heard enough.”

Jack turned toward the gate.

“Wait.”

He stopped.

“If you continue this, I'll tell Jennifer.”

Emelda's eyes widened.

“You would do that?”

“Yes.”

“You'll destroy our friendship.”

“You're the one putting it at risk.”

She stared at him for a moment before her expression hardened.

“Maybe Jennifer needs to hear the truth.”

Jack turned around.

“What truth?”

“The truth about the difference between you and her.”

His face became serious.

“Don't start.”

“No. You need to listen.”

Emelda stepped closer.

“Jack, you and Jennifer come from completely different worlds. You may love each other, but love doesn't erase reality.”

Jack said nothing.

“Jennifer is the daughter of Douglas Oko. Her family has money, influence, and a name that opens doors. Do you really think they'll accept a mechanic as her husband?”

Jack's jaw tightened.

“Jennifer is an adult. She can make her own decisions.”

“You think it's that simple?”

“Yes.”

“No, it isn't.”

She shook her head.

“Her parents have expectations for her. They've already imagined the kind of future she should have. They want someone wealthy, connected, and powerful.”

“And what exactly are you saying I am?”

“I'm saying you're different.”

“Different doesn't mean inferior.”

“I didn't say inferior.”

“But that's what you mean.”

Emelda's expression softened.

“I'm trying to make you understand before it's too late. Your relationship with Jennifer may never have a future.”

Jack gave a bitter laugh.

“You don't know that.”

“I know her family.”

“So do I.”

“You don't know them the way I do.”

“Then stop worrying about my relationship.”

“I'm worried because I care about you.”

Jack looked away.

“Don't use that as an excuse.”

“I'm not.”

“Then why are you here?”

Emelda hesitated.

Then she finally said what she had come to say.

“Because I want you to give me a chance.”

Jack froze.

For several seconds, he simply stared at her.

“No.”

“You haven't even heard me.”

“I don't need to.”

“I've always cared about you. I know your struggles, where you came from, and what you want from life. We could build something together.”

Jack shook his head.

“No, Emelda.”

“We could start small and grow together. You wouldn't have to worry about Jennifer's parents rejecting you.”

“Stop.”

Her voice trembled.

“We could have a future.”

“I said stop!”

Emelda fell silent.

Jack was visibly angry.

“You came to my house to tell me that Jennifer and I have no future, then asked me to choose you. That's not concern. That's jealousy.”

“I'm not jealous.”

“Then leave Jennifer and me alone.”

“I only want what's best for you.”

“No. You want what's best for yourself.”

Emelda's eyes filled with tears, but she refused to let them fall.

“You will regret this.”

“Maybe. But I'll deal with whatever happens with Jennifer when the time comes.”

“You're throwing away a chance to be with someone who understands you.”

“I don't want that chance.”

“Because of Jennifer?”

“Yes.”

“You really love her that much?”

Jack didn't hesitate.

“Yes.”

The answer left no room for argument.

Emelda looked at him for a long moment before nodding.

“I understand.”

She turned and began walking away.

After a few steps, she stopped.

“One day, Jack, you'll realize that some love stories are not meant to happen.”

Jack looked at her.

“Maybe. But Jennifer and I will decide our story ourselves.”

Emelda walked away.

Jack watched until she disappeared around the corner.

He closed the gate and stood quietly for a moment.

Her words had stirred something inside him. He knew the difference between his life and Jennifer's. He knew her family might never accept him.

But he also knew one thing.

He loved Jennifer.

And he wasn't going to abandon that love simply because someone else believed it was impossible.

His phone suddenly rang.

Jack pulled it from his pocket.

Jennifer's name appeared on the screen.

A smile immediately replaced the anger on his face.

He answered.

“Hello, my love.”

“Jack,” Jennifer said warmly. “Where are you?”

“I'm home.”

“Can I see you tonight?”

Jack glanced toward the gate through which Emelda had just disappeared.

Then he smiled.

“Of course. I'll be waiting.”
