Chapter 4 – A Difficult Choice

The afternoon sun poured through the wide glass windows of the café, casting golden patterns across the polished floor. Soft music played in the background as waiters moved quietly between tables.

Jennifer sat opposite Emelda, barely touching her drink.

Her mind was still trapped in the dinner at her parents’ house the previous evening.

Julian.

Even thinking about his name made her uncomfortable.

She had always known her parents would eventually talk about marriage, but she had not expected them to be so direct. Her father had spoken about Julian as though the decision had already been made. Her mother had smiled approvingly, as if she could already see Jennifer walking down the aisle beside him.

Jennifer had barely slept.

Emelda studied her.

“You've been staring at that glass for ten minutes.”

Jennifer blinked.

“I was thinking.”

“About Julian?”

“Of course.”

Emelda leaned back.

“Then give him a chance.”

Jennifer frowned.

“I barely know him.”

“And how long did it take you to know Jack?”

Jennifer fell silent.

“That is different.”

“How?”

“With Jack, it just happened.”

“Love?”

Jennifer nodded.

She remembered the first time she had seen Jack. It had been during a frightening moment when she was in danger. He had appeared when she needed help most, and something inside her had changed.

What began as gratitude had slowly become love.

Real love.

The kind she could not simply turn off because her parents had chosen someone else.

Emelda interrupted her thoughts.

“I know you love Jack, Jennifer. But you have to think about your family too.”

“My family has never been my problem.”

“Your family is exactly why this is complicated.”

Jennifer looked away.

Emelda continued, “Your father is a respected businessman. Your mother moves in circles where wealth, influence, and family names matter. They have expectations for you.”

“I know.”

“Then stop pretending those expectations don't exist.”

Jennifer sighed.

“Sometimes I wish I could just be Jennifer. Not Jennifer Oko. Not Douglas Oko's daughter. Just me.”

“I understand. But you were born into privilege. You can't simply walk away from everything that comes with it.”

Jennifer's expression tightened.

“Does that mean I have to let them choose my husband?”

“No. But don't reject Julian without knowing him.”

Jennifer stared at her.

“You really think my parents are right?”

“I think they may believe they're protecting you.”

“By deciding who I should marry?”

“By trying to give you the future they think is best.”

Jennifer looked down.

“And Jack?”

Emelda hesitated.

“That is the difficult part.”

“What?”

“You and Jack come from different worlds.”

Jennifer's heart sank.

“I hate hearing that.”

“But it's true. Your family has wealth, influence, and connections. Jack has none of those things. Your father may not care about his feelings if he believes Jack cannot fit into your world.”

Jennifer knew she was right.

Her father's standards were high. He had always judged the people around his family carefully. If he discovered that Jack came from a completely different social background, he would never accept the relationship easily.

“You think Dad would fight it?”

“I think he would do more than that.”

Jennifer's stomach tightened.

She imagined her father confronting Jack. She imagined the disappointment in her mother's eyes. She imagined being forced to choose between the man she loved and the family she had spent her entire life trying to please.

“What if love is enough?” she whispered.

Emelda gave her a sad smile.

“I hope it is.”

Jennifer stared at her hands.

She did not want a husband chosen because he had money or a powerful family. She wanted Jack. But for the first time, she understood that loving him might come with a price.

Then her phone vibrated.

She looked at the screen.

Jack.

Her heart immediately lifted.

Emelda nodded toward the phone.

“Answer.”

Jennifer pressed the call button.

“Hi, Jack.”

“I've been trying to reach you. Are you okay?”

“Yes. I'm with Emelda.”

“I wanted to see you.”

Jennifer hesitated.

“Tonight?”

“If you can.”

Her mind raced.

Julian.

Her parents.

Her father's expectations.

Then she heard Jack's voice again.

“I can,” she said.

Relief entered his voice.

“Where?”

“There's a restaurant downtown. I'll send you the location.”

“Okay. I'll be there.”

“Jack?”

“Yes?”

Jennifer swallowed.

“I miss you.”

A brief silence followed.

“I miss you too.”

The call ended.

Jennifer lowered the phone.

Emelda smiled.

“So, you're seeing him tonight.”

“Yes.”

“You're making things harder for yourself.”

“Maybe.”

“But you're happy.”

Jennifer's smile faded.

“That's what scares me.”

Emelda looked at her.

Jennifer turned toward the window. Outside, people moved along the busy street, unaware that her entire future seemed to be hanging over a single decision.

“I love Jack,” she said quietly. “But I know what my family expects from me. If I choose him, I may lose their approval. If I choose Julian, I may lose myself.”

Emelda reached across the table and held her hand.

“Then don't choose today. Go to dinner. Be honest with Jack. Let tomorrow come when it comes.”

Jennifer nodded.

But she knew tomorrow would not be the real problem.

Sooner or later, her father would discover the truth about Jack.

And when that happened, Jennifer feared she would be forced to choose between the man who had captured her heart and the family that had shaped her entire life.

For the first time, she wondered whether she could keep both, or whether loving Jack meant declaring war on her own family.
