Chapter thirty.

Evelyn's POV.

My heart was racing as I stared at the judge, my hands clasped together in anticipation.

The judge began to speak, "With all the evidence presented from both parties, I hereby declare..." He paused, looking at us, and I held my breath. "Mr. Ethan Blackwood..."

He trailed off again, and I swallowed hard, closing my eyes.

The judge continued, "Mr. Ethan Blackwood, guilty."

I let out a loud cry of joy and rushed to Alex, hugging him tightly. "I did it! I did it! I did it!" I exclaimed, and he held me close.

The judge slammed his gavel, shouting, "Order! Order! Order!" I released Alex and returned to my seat.

The judge continued, "Mr. Ethan Blackwood is guilty of attempted murder and theft. However, regarding the bigamy charge, due to hospital records indicating Evelyn Blackwood's memory loss and lack of concrete evidence, he is acquitted of that count.”

I nodded, trying to hold back tears. Although I wanted Ethan to face punishment for bigamy, I was satis

Chapter thirty one.Evelyn's POV.As Olivia ranted on, she didn't notice the police officers sneaking up behind her. I caught her attention with a mischievous smile, gesturing for her to turn around. Her eyes widened as she took in the scene, and she flinched when she saw the officers. The officers swiftly handcuffed her, announcing, "You're under arrest for being an accomplice to attempted murder." Olivia's eyes darted to me, her face contorted in shock and anger."Evelyn, you did—" she began, but her voice trailed off as I smiled smugly. "Yes, I pressed the charges," I said, my voice calm and collected.Olivia's face turned red with rage as she snarled, "You betrayed me!" She lunged forward, trying to reach me, but the officers pulled her back.I stared at her, my smile unwavering. "This is what betrayal tastes like, darling," I said, my voice dripping with sarcasm. "Why are you complaining? I just gave you a taste of your own medicine.”Olivia's face contorted in rage as she hurled

Chapter thirty two.Alex’s POV."Evelyn," I said, but before I could process anything, she pressed her lips to mine.I gasped in surprise and pulled away immediately. What's happening? Evelyn laughed, clearly drunk, and leaned in to kiss me again. "Evelyn, stop," I said firmly. But she shook her head, her eyes welling up with tears. "No, I won't," she slurred. She began to sob, her words tumbling out in a despairing whisper. "No one likes me... everyone hates me."I tried to comfort her, opening my arms. "Shh, Evelyn, come closer."But she flinched away, still crying. I wished she wouldn't drink so much ."Evelyn, stop crying," I said, trying to sound firm, but it came out more like a plea. I had more important things to do, but I was stuck here with her.I pulled her close and hugged her, patting her back. "I'm here, I don't hate you," I said softly. But as soon as the words left my lips, she pulled away, her face twisted in a frown. "You hate me. You're always grumpy, your face

Chapter thirty three.Evelyn's POV.I groaned, slowly opening my eyes. My head felt heavy, and I shut them again, trying to shake off the haze. When I opened them again, everything was blurry. I closed my eyes once more and tried again, this time focusing slowly. As my vision cleared, I struggled to sit up, looking around the unfamiliar room. It didn't resemble my room or Ethan's. This room was larger, painted a soft pink, with white curtains. My gaze wandered to the king-size bed, which was also pink, including the bedsheets. The dressing table matched the pink theme. For a moment, I thought my drunkenness was playing tricks on me. I closed my eyes and opened them again – everything still looked the same."Where am I?" I wondered, feeling a surge of panic. I can't remember anything from yesterday aside me going home after the court case.I wanted to call out for help, but a part of me suspected I might be kidnapped, and alerting whoever was holding me might not be the best idea.I

Chapter thirty four.Alex's POV.Her face turned cold, and I chuckled. "What's wrong? Cat got your tongue?" I asked, but she remained silent, staring at me. I continued, "I'm only asking you to defend me for money laundering and drugs. Why are you acting like I'm proposing?"Her expression changed, and she finally spoke up. "Did you get involved in money laundering and drugs?" she asked.I nodded. "Yes, I did. And there's evidence, thanks to your father," I said, my anger rising. She looked confused. "My father? What does he have to do with this?" she asked.I wanted to confront her about her father's past actions, which had ruined my family. But I bit my tongue, knowing this wasn't the time for banters."Your father didn't get the facts straight," I said, my anger boiling over. "He accused my family of money laundering and drugs, pressed charges, and manipulated the outcome. We were wrongly convicted."As expected, she defended her father, saying; “My father would never lie. Chapter thirty five.Evelyn's POV.I couldn't believe what Alex had said. If my dad had pressed charges against his family for money laundering and drugs, it meant they were guilty. I couldn't defend someone who had committed such crimes. That would make me no better than Ethan and Olivia. Moreover, my dad had brought the charges, and Alex was expecting me to call him a liar. That was something I couldn't do.I slammed my hands against the wall, cursing my own stupidity. "Damn it!" I exclaimed, wincing in pain. Defending Alex would ruin my law firm's reputation - too much was at stake.I had to get out. Taking a deep breath, I headed to the window. The second-floor drop was risky, but I didn't care. Staying with Alex was already a nightmare.I closed my eyes, feeling a wave of desperation. Could I ever find happiness? It seemed like every time I thought I could, something came crashing down. I was allergic to happiness, it seemed. With a surge of anger, I prepared to make my escape.

Chapter thirty six.Evelyn's POV.I took the phone and my eyes widened in shock. There was a picture of Alex kissing my cheek, and I had no memory of it. I recalled the day the photos were taken – Alex had insisted on taking pictures, but nothing like this.My gaze darted to Alex, who stood in front of me with a smirk, his hands in his pockets. "What?" he asked, snatching the phone from my hand. He walked closer to me, a mischievous glint in his eye. "Imagine what would happen if I post this online and tell everyone we're in a relationship. What do you think people would say?""Don't even think about it," I warned, but he just chuckled. "Shh," he said, placing his hand over my mouth. "If I post this, people will think you had your husband locked up so you could cheat on him with me," Alex said, his words making my eyes widen in horror.Alex was despicable, and the look in his eyes told me he wasn't just bluffing. She shook her head, still frowning, and dropped the napkin she was holding."What do you want from his room?" she asked, her tone guarded. I hesitated, rubbing the back of my neck. "Nothing," I lied, but she clearly didn't believe me.She stared at me knowingly but didn't press the issue. "You can access most rooms, but the boss's room is off-limits," she said."Why?" I asked, feeling a surge of frustration. "I'm not a criminal, if there's anyone who is then he's…." I bit my tongue, realizing I was about to reveal too much.I took a deep breath, composing myself. I opened my eyes and forced a smile, trying to diffuse the tension."I'm sorry about that," I mumbled, trying to appease her. She smiled and said, "It's fine." Chapter forty seven.Evelyn's POV.Two weeks later."Miss Evelyn, are you sure you want to do this?" the doctor asked.I turned to face Alex's still form, my eyes lingering on his lifeless body. I nodded slowly. "Y-yes."The doctor nodded sympathetically. "I'll arrange the paperwork."With that, I stepped out, leaning against the doorframe as I gazed at Alex. Two weeks had passed, and there was no improvement. The doctors had tried everything, but nothing was working. My eyes welled up with tears as I whispered, "Alex..."
