Adrian

The Chairman's suite was a hallway before it was a room. A long, low corridor of dark wood lit by amber sconces, with a carpet so thick my footsteps vanished into it. After the concrete and the red dark it felt like walking into a held breath. Somewhere ahead, a piano was playing very quietly. A piece I almost knew.

"Don't," I whispered, as Dale reached for the door.

"It opened itself."

"That's why."

He stopped with his hand in the air. Behind him Corinne had gone white. The three of us

AdrianOn the fourth morning, a rental car came up the farm track too fast, and I knew who it was before it stopped.I was on the porch with my leg propped on an upturned crate and a mug of tea going cold on the rail. The knee had swollen to the size of a grapefruit on the second night and stayed there. Elena had wrapped it in a tea towel full of frozen peas, and I'd lost track of whether I'd thanked her. The house belonged to Pilar's aunt. It smelled of woodsmoke and wet dog, and it had one road in and one road out. I had counted both before I unpacked. The car skidded on the gravel. A young man got out and left the door open behind him with the engine still running. He had his father's shoulders. That was the first thing, and it nearly finished me. Dale's way of standing with his weight a little forward, like a man about to push a stuck door. The rest was somebody else. Twenty-two, hair that needed cutting, a university hoodie, a face with no sleep in it."Are you Wolfe?" he said."

AdrianI'd like to say the news was quiet. It wasn't. It was the loudest night of my life.By two in the morning the Calloway Hotel was on every channel in the country. By four it was on every channel I could find. Rafe sat in the back of an ambulance with a blanket round his shoulders and a laptop on his knees, watching feeds from three continents. Gala fire. A charity event ends in tragedy. Vale family heir praised for composure. A woman on one network cried, quite genuinely, over footage of Julian carrying an elderly donor down the front steps.Nobody had counted the dead yet. They said two. Then three. They said it had been an electrical fault.I sat on the curb with a paramedic's hand on my wrist and a plastic mask over my face and watched the building burn. What I remember most is how ordinary the world looked. A newsagent across the road with its shutters half up. A bus going by with a pantomime advertised on its side. People on the far pavement filming on their phones and laug

AdrianI smelled it before anyone spoke. Smoke has a particular sweetness when it comes up through old plaster, and I knew it, because I'd smelled it once before in a cellar I never went into."What has he done?" Sienna said."What I asked him to do." The old woman didn't rise. "The vault is on the lowest level. A great deal of paper. It will go up quickly.""There are people in the building.""Not many. The guests have gone, the staff are being seen out." She turned the cane. "A few stragglers. Your friends, I expect. It's regrettable. But memory is a dangerous thing to leave lying about, Mara, and I've been careful a very long time.""You were going to let me read it.""I was going to let you choose." For the first time there was an edge in her voice. "Whether to know. Whether to keep the thing we've both lived with. I thought you deserved that. And then you stood on a stage and asked a room full of strangers about Fenwick Ridge, and I saw how little time we had."Dale made a small

A piece I almost knew."Don't," I whispered, as Dale reached for the door."It opened itself.""That's why."He stopped with his hand in the air. Behind him Corinne had gone white. The three of us stood on the threshold, and I thought of the oldest rule in my trade, which is that the most dangerous door is the one that welcomes you."Dale. You and Corinne wait here and hold this open." I took the rubber wedge from my pocket, the one from the thirteenth landing, and kicked it under the door. "If I'm not back in ten minutes, take the stairs down to the lobby. Find Elena. Tell her everything.""Ten minutes is nothing.""It's what I've got."Corinne caught my sleeve before I went. "There's a

AdrianI have never wanted to hit anyone as badly as I wanted to hit Sienna at that moment, and I have never respected anyone more. She walked offstage between the old woman and the gloved one, in her green dress with her braid down her back, and she didn't look at me again. The curtain at the far end of the stage swung open on a corridor lit by the same dull red. A service lift waited with its doors held. She stepped inside without hurrying. The old woman followed, cane tapping, then the gloved woman with her hand under the old woman's elbow. The doors closed. A number lit above them and began to climb.Fourteen. I watched it all the way."Adrian." Elena had come across the stage at a run, low, and she grabbed my sleeve in both hands. "What did she say? I couldn't hear, they were too far.""She went with them.""She" Elena's face did something terrible. "No. She wouldn't. Not without telling us.""She told me." I heard how steady I sounded and hated it. "With her eyes. She's bought t

(Adrian)The lift died between the first basement and the ground floor, and for a long moment the only sound was Corinne breathing. Then the emergency lamps came on, one after another, down the shaft and across the ceiling of the car. Red, the dull red of a darkroom. Dale had his palm flat on the steel wall as if he could hold the building up. Corinne had slid down it until she was sitting on the floor with her knees drawn in and her hair hanging over the cut on her forehead."It's the generator," Dale said. "It'll kick in. Thirty seconds.""It's been thirty seconds.""Then it's a different thirty seconds.""Is Sienna" Corinne began."She's fine," I said, too quickly, and heard how it sounded. "She's on a stage with four hundred people watching. Nobody touches a woman in front of that."Corinne looked at me with an expression I knew. It's the look of someone who has heard that sentence at a dinner table, from a man who didn't believe it either.I pried the doors apart with my fingers
