Anita pov

Donald asked about my day the way he always did now, over dinner, his attention arranged carefully toward me and nothing else.

“Good, actually,” I said. “Clara Whitfield made Sorrel an offer. Four stockists. A real season, not just a pop-up.”

His fork paused a half-inch above his plate, there, then settled again—quick enough that I might have missed it a month ago.

“That’s wonderful,” he said. “Genuinely. You’ve worked hard for this.”

He set down his fork.

“What are the terms?”

  • The wife I swore I’d never be    Chapter 106 — Wrong Number

AnitaMarcus stared at the screen for one full second before he answered. In that second, I understood, watching his face, that he was deciding something about how to sound before he’d even lifted the phone to his ear.“Yes,” he said.I couldn’t hear the other side of it.I only had Marcus’s face to read, and I read it the way Kelvin had taught me to read everyone now, watching for the small involuntary things a person couldn’t fully control. His jaw tightened. Then, unexpectedly, it eased.“No,” Marcus said.“Wrong number, I think. There’s no Danny here.”He held the phone a moment longer, listening, then ended the call and set it face down on the table.A long breath left him, taking the tightness in his shoulders with it.“That wasn’t Callum,” he said.“That was someone using Callum’s old number, apparently.”“He must have had it reassigned recently.”“Whoever’s got it now was trying to reach someone named Danny.”The relief that swept through the room was so immediate and so physi

Anita pov Marcus laid Kelvin’s folder next to my father’s pages on the table and studied both for a long moment before he said anything at all.“Six weeks,” he said finally.“Both accounts land on the same window.”He looked between the two sets of papers.“That’s not something I can dismiss as coincidence anymore.”“That’s what I said.”I watched him trace a finger along the dates, cross-referencing without needing to ask either of us anything.“What does it actually get us?”“More than we had an hour ago.”He sat back.“Less than we need.”Marcus rested one hand on the folders.“The sentence your father remembered helps.”“A man doesn’t say that lightly, even years before anything happens.”“It shows intent, or at least the beginning of it.”He glanced down again.“Combined with the timeline… combined with the payment routed through shell accounts… combined with whatever’s sitting in that storage unit…”He shook his head slowly.“It’s a real case.”“It’s not a case a prosecutor tak

Kelvin pov Anita got into the car with a folder in her hands and didn’t speak until I’d pulled away from the curb.“He gave me something,” she said. “Real. Not everything, but real.”“Tell me.”“Donald borrowed my father’s car. Six weeks ago.” She opened the folder in her lap, her father’s handwriting filling two pages, careful and cramped—a man writing down every detail he could recall because his daughter had asked him to. “Had it for a few days. Brought it back cleaned. My father found a smell in the boot he couldn’t place. Bleach, stronger than it should have been. He talked himself out of asking about it at the time.”I pulled over before I’d fully decided to, because I needed to not be driving while I heard the rest of this.“Six weeks,” I said. “That’s Marcus’s number. The storage unit. The night guard, the wrapped thing moved in the dark.”“I know.” Her voice was steady, but her hands weren’t. The folder trembled slightly where she held it. “Two people, two completely separat

  • The wife I swore I’d never be    Chapter 103 — Watching His Face

Anita pov I watched my father’s face the whole time, exactly as Kelvin had told me to.His shirt collar sat looser than it used to, and I found myself wondering when he’d stopped eating regular meals, and whether I’d have noticed at all if I hadn’t been looking this closely.“You look well,” he said, pouring tea neither of us would drink. “How’s the little boy settling in? Donald’s cousin’s son.”“He’s settling,” I said. “He’s a good boy.”“I’m glad Donald’s doing right by him.”He said it easily, no weight in it at all, and I filed that away, because a man who believed the cousin story completely was either genuinely fooled or performing being fooled, and I could not yet tell which. He set the teapot down and sat across from me.For a moment neither of us said anything, the ordinary sitting room settling around us, the clock on the mantel ticking through a silence that felt, for the first time in a long while, like something other than comfortable.“You didn’t come all this way for

Anita pov “I think it’s time to talk to my father.”“You’re assuming he’ll tell you everything.”“He’s my father.”“He’s also the man who hid Walter’s truth from you for years.” Kelvin said it quietly, without cruelty, but he didn’t take it back either. “He knew what your family did to Donald’s father before either of you were born, and he sat on that for most of your marriage. He only told you when he had no choice left. What makes you certain this time is different.”I opened my mouth to answer and found the answer wasn’t as ready as I’d wanted it to be.“Because this time I’m asking directly,” I said finally. “He didn’t volunteer Walter. I had to corner him with it. If I go to him and ask a direct question, about Donald, about anything strange he’s noticed, I think he answers me. I think the not-telling was always about protecting me from a truth he was ashamed of, not about deceiving me for its own sake.”“Or he protects you again. The same instinct, a different secret.”“Maybe.”

  • The wife I swore I’d never be    Chapter 101 — A Building With No Name On It

Kelvin pov “I got inside,” Marcus said. No greeting, no warning that it was even him on the line, just his voice arriving flat and fast the second I picked up. Eleven at night. I spoke “Tell me.” “It’s a storage facility. Private, the kind that doesn’t advertise, doesn’t take walk-ins, requires a referral to even get a unit. I talked to someone who used to do security there, off the books, cash for the conversation. He remembered Callum. Said he’d been coming for months, always alone, always the same unit.” “What’s in it.” “He didn’t know. Nobody working there knows what’s in anyone’s unit, that’s the entire point of a place like that. But he remembered something else.” Marcus’s voice had gone careful, the tone he used when he was about to hand me something he wished he wasn’t. “About six weeks ago, Callum came in the middle of the night, alone, and asked the overnight guard to help him move something heavy into the unit. Wrapped. The guard didn’t ask questions, be

His footsteps stopped just inside the kitchen doorway.I had turned the phone over by then. Both hands on the counter. The coffee machine made its noise at six forty-seven.I didn’t move to pour until it finished. I stood at the counter with my hands wrapped around nothing and listened to it run. That sound. Donald did not say a word on the way home. Not one. Not when I fell into step beside him as the evening wound down. Not when we collected our coats and walked out into the cool Velmoor night. Not when he opened the car door for me with the quiet efficiency of a man performing a task he stopped t

“The Meridian deal was always going to close in Q3,” I said. “Donald’s team structured it that way from the beginning. The timeline was never a surprise.” Mr. Alderman nodded like I had said something brilliant. His wife smiled at me and looked away in the same breath. The smile of a woman who se
