Lucian's pov

The council chamber was at the end of the east corridor.

I had walked this path a hundred times. As a child, summoned by my father. As a young wolf, called to account for my curse. As Alpha, summoned to answer for my pack.

Never had I dreaded it more than this moment.

Cressida walked beside me, her shoulder brushed against mine. Her hands were clasped in front of her, fingers white-knuckled. She wasn't trembling...she was too stubborn for that...

But she's terrified.

My little wit

  • The Alpha's Secret Witch    The safe place

Cressida's pov The tears did not fall until I reached his door.I had held them in through the corridor and up the stairs and past the guards who looked at me with curious eyes. I had held them in while my chest ached and my throat burned and my hands shook. But when I stood in front of the heavy oak door with the Alpha crest carved into the wood the tears came and I could not stop them.I knocked. No one answered.I knocked again and my fist was weak and my voice was small."Lucian."The door opened and he was standing there with his shirt untucked and his sleeves rolled up and his hair messy. His face was tired and his eyes were dark and his brow was furrowed."Cressida? What happened?"I shook my head and walked past him into the room. The fire was crackling and the candles were burning and the desk was covered in papers and maps. He had been working. He was always working."Talk to me," he said.I sat on the edge of the bed and pressed my hands to my face and my shoulders shook.

  • The Alpha's Secret Witch    The substitute

Cressida's pov Professor Eliana was out sick and the substitute was old and tired and clearly counting the minutes until retirement. His name was Master Holden and he had been teaching at Blackfrost for forty years and he did not care about drama or plays or the Salem project. He sat at the desk and opened a book and told us to read silently for the rest of the period. The class groaned.Master Holden did not look up.I opened my book and stared at the pages and did not see any of the words. My mind was still on the dining hall and Sha's accusation and the way the whole academy had turned to watch. The whispers had followed me all morning and the stares had burned holes in my back and I was tired.Raven was sitting beside me and her knee was bouncing and her eyes kept darting toward the door. Benita was across the room with her head down and her shoulders hunched. Tasha was in the back row filing her nails and not even pretending to read. The door opened and Sha walked in.She was la

  • The Alpha's Secret Witch    The Fallout

Cressida's povThe academy woke up angry the next morning.I felt it the moment I stepped out of Lucian's quarters. The corridors were crowded and the whispers were loud and the stares were sharp. Wolves turned away when I walked past and their voices dropped and their eyes followed me. The dining hall was worse. Every table was full and every face was turned toward me when I walked in.I kept my head up and my shoulders straight and my breathing steady.Raven was already at our usual table with Benita and Tasha. Her face was pale and her eyes were tired and her hands were wrapped around a cup of tea. Benita looked like she had not slept. Tasha was filing her nails and her expression was unreadable."Sit down," Raven said.I sat."You look terrible," Tasha said."I feel terrible.""The whole academy is talking about you.""I know.""Sha is telling everyone that you threatened her. That you used magic on her. That you are dangerous."I looked at Tasha and her silver eyes were sharp."S

  • The Alpha's Secret Witch    The Breaking Point

Lucian's pov The council meeting was already a disaster before Tasha walked through the door.Elder Marlow had been speaking for twenty minutes and her voice was sharp and her patience was gone. Elder Thorn sat beside her with his broad face carved from stone. Elder Whitmore adjusted his spectacles and stared at me like I was a problem he had been trying to solve for weeks. Marcus Voss stood by the window and his arms were crossed and his jaw was tight."The border is not secure," Elder Marlow said. "The killer is still free. And your wolves are dying.""My wolves are doing everything they can.""Everything they can is not enough."I kept my voice steady. "Then tell me what you want me to do.""We want you to accept our help.""I do not need your help.""You need something. Because whatever you are doing is not working."The door opened and Tasha walked in. She did not knock and she did not apologize and she did not acknowledge the elders. Her silver braids were loose and her arms we

  • The Alpha's Secret Witch    Crazy day

Note. This chapter is meant to be before "The confrontation"Cressida's pov The ride back to the academy was faster than the ride out.The dark swallowed the road and the headlights cut through the snow and the wind bit at my cheeks. Lucian was pressed against my back and his arms were around my waist and his chin was on my shoulder. He was warm and solid and his heartbeat was steady against my spine.I did not want to go back. The academy meant council meetings and border patrols and whispers in the corridors. It meant Sha and her sharp smiles and her cold eyes. It meant the killer and the bodies and the weight of everything pressing down on us.But the road meant freedom. The road meant the wind in my hair and the engine under my hands and the world falling away behind me. The road meant Lucian holding on like he trusted me to keep him safe.We reached the gates and the guards waved us through. Their faces were curious but they did not ask questions. No one asked questions when the

  • The Alpha's Secret Witch    The Confrontation

Cressida's pov The dining hall was crowded and loud and I should have known better than to come here alone.Raven had a headache and Benita was studying and Tasha was somewhere in the library filing her nails and pretending to read. Ember was asleep in Lucian's quarters and Lucian was in a meeting with the council and I was hungry and tired of waiting. So I walked to the dining hall by myself and I got my food and I sat at an empty table near the window. The whispers started immediately. Not loud. Just soft and sharp and cutting. The kind of whispers that were meant to be overheard. There she is.The Alpha's pet.I heard she threatened Sha.I heard she bewitched him.I kept my eyes on my plate and my shoulders straight and my breathing steady. The food tasted like nothing and my hands were shaking and I pushed the food around with my fork and did not eat.The whispers stopped. The hall went quiet.I looked up.Sha Konstantinou was standing at the end of my table with her honey blonde
