Chapter 5

Penulis: Lilly Little
Grace's face went from red to pale.

Madison quickly stepped in to calm things down.

"Peter, come on. Mom only said that because she didn't want you to leave. She was trying to scare you, and you actually took her seriously. You really don't know how to take a joke. Alright, enough. It's over. I'll talk to Simon again later. That kid never listens."

As she spoke, she reached into the suitcase and started putting the clothes back, but I stopped her.

"Madison, I've already made up my mind. I told you a long time ago that I wanted us to move out, and you refused. I'm not backing down this time. Even if nothing had happened to Zoe today, I still wouldn't stay in this house any longer."

Andrew slammed the end of his wooden practice sword against the floor.

"Let him go! Let's see how long he lasts on his own!"

With help from a coworker, I quickly found an apartment. It was a brand-new, fully furnished two-bedroom with a bright, spacious living room.

Best of all, the landlord, Vanessa Meyer, ran an after-school program downstairs. It would save me a huge amount of time driving Zoe back and forth every day.

I loved the apartment, and Vanessa seemed just as happy to have us as tenants, especially Zoe. Whenever she spoke to Zoe, she crouched down to her level and listened with genuine patience.

When I pulled out my debit card to pay the rent, I discovered there was far less money in the account than I expected.

I didn't need anyone to explain where it had gone. Madison had obviously been funneling money to Grace and the rest of her family behind my back. No wonder she always changed the subject whenever I asked whether we had enough saved for a down payment.

Deep down, she never wanted us to buy a place of our own. She wanted to keep me trapped in that house, working myself to exhaustion while her entire family treated me like hired help.

No one would willingly spend ten years living under their in-laws' roof.

When Madison and I first started talking about marriage, I had made my plans clear. We would rent for a few years, work hard, and save enough for a home of our own.

At the time, Madison was still an only child even though Grace and Andrew had already started talking about having another baby. Like many older couples who regretted stopping at one child, they were determined to expand their family despite their age.

But they never told us they were considering having another child.

Instead, to stop us from renting a place of our own, they told me Madison was their only child and the house would feel empty if she moved out. They said living together would save money, keep the family close, and make it easier for everyone to look out for one another.

After Madison and her parents took turns talking me into it, I finally gave in and moved into their house. Back in my hometown, people started joking that I had married into her family.

I used to insist that wasn't true. As far as I was concerned, marrying into your wife's family meant fully becoming part of her household and having your children take her last name.

I was only living with my in-laws temporarily. That was completely different.

But no one cared about the technicality. They laughed at me.

"You live under your father-in-law's roof, don't you? You spend every day taking care of your wife's parents, don't you? Call it whatever you want. A real man would get a place of his own."

Over the next ten years, I thought about buying a house more times than I could count, but reality shut the idea down every time.

I never imagined home prices in the city would rise so fast. Within just a few years, houses that once seemed within reach became completely unaffordable.

"I'm not curious," I said. "I already figured it out."The moment Madison came to ask me for money and let the word redevelopment slip, I had pretty much pieced together what had happened.Madison cared about money more than anything, so William used that to lure her in. He put a younger, attentive man in front of her to flatter her and tell her exactly what she wanted to hear. With Madison caught up in the promise of a windfall and a new romance, why would she give me another thought?William arranged for Jerry to meet her through a minor fender bender. They exchanged numbers, started talking, and stayed in touch.Jerry played the part perfectly. He drove Madison to and from work, helped with heavy chores around the house, and filled the role I had left behind after moving out.One day, he casually showed her a doctored redevelopment map. The market on Easton Road was clearly marked inside the proposed buyout zone.People had been saying for years that the Easton Road market mi

Ten days after Simon threw the fish tank out the window, Madison came to see me.She looked completely worn out, and her voice was hoarse. After hesitating for a long time, she finally asked me for a loan."I sold my mom's apartment, but it still wasn't enough to cover the girl's medical bills. I wouldn't be here if I had any other option. Please lend me 200 grand. I'll pay you back as soon as we receive the buyout money for the commercial property.""Buyout money?" I stared at her.Panic flashed across her face, as though she had just realized she had said too much. She forced an awkward smile.I didn't bother asking what she meant. Whatever was happening with that property had nothing to do with me anymore."I'm sorry, Madison. It's not that I don't want to help. I can't. "The last time your brother pushed someone down the stairs, the hospital bills and settlement for the mother and baby came to almost 300 thousand. Every penny came out of my account."You know better than a

As Simon screamed, he shoved Grace toward us with all his strength. At first, she tried to coax Zoe into putting down the keyboard. When that didn't work, she lost her temper and snapped at her."You ungrateful little brat! Why do you always have to fight your uncle over everything? No wonder your mother doesn't like you. You're stubborn as a mule!"Zoe's eyes filled with fear. She shrank behind me, but she still held tightly to the keyboard.I took her hand and said, "It's alright, Zoe. Keep your keyboard. We're going home."Before I could take a single step, a deafening crash sounded behind us. Even I flinched.I spun around and saw Simon wildly swinging a baseball bat at everything within reach. The first blow shattered the glass coffee table. As he swung the bat, he screamed, "That's what you get for taking it! That's what you get for not listening to me! That's what you get for not getting it back!"His second swing slammed into the refrigerator, leaving a deep dent in th

Before I could give it any more thought, William called."So? Is it official?"I looked down at the divorce papers still clutched in my hand. "Yeah. It's done.""Good. Any longer, and my brother might've worked himself to death. Drinks tonight? We owe the guy who pulled this off."I froze. His brother? The guy who pulled this off? Before I could ask what he meant, a message came through from Madison. I told William I would call him back and ended the call.Madison said that now that we were divorced, she wanted nothing more to do with me. She told me to come by that afternoon and clear out everything belonging to Zoe and me. Anything left behind after that would be thrown away. The way she was rushing to cut all ties only made me more curious about what William had done to make her agree to the divorce so quickly.I picked Zoe up from school and took her back to the house to collect our things. I brought her along because many of her favorite toys were still there. We had

I stood in the doorway and refused to let Madison inside. For once, she pulled a hair clip from her purse and called into the apartment, "Zoe, it's me! I brought you a pretty hair clip. Come see!"Zoe sat in the living room with her back to Madison, quietly drawing. She didn't even turn around.Madison's expression darkened. "You're unbelievable! Have you been turning Zoe against me and teaching her not to see me as her mother?"I let out a cold laugh."So you do remember you're her mother. "How many times have you actually held her since she was born? You stopped breastfeeding her when she was two months old so you could take care of Simon instead. Some mother you are!"Have you ever trimmed her nails? Braided her hair? Did you even know she once had a cavity so painful she couldn't sleep? "When she was in the hospital with pneumonia and the other kids cried for their mothers during their shots, did you ever notice the way she watched them?"You don't deserve to call yourse

The pregnant woman fell down about 13 steps and went into shock.Terrified, Andrew called 911, then ordered Grace to take Simon somewhere and hide him. He told them not to come back or show their faces under any circumstances.I sighed, pulled out my phone, and called Vanessa. After briefly explaining what had happened, I asked her to keep an eye on Zoe because I might not make it home that night.Vanessa agreed without hesitation and told me to take care of whatever I needed to without worrying about Zoe.A wave of gratitude washed over me, and I thanked her sincerely.-Every minute we spent waiting outside the operating room felt unbearable. The pregnant woman's mother tried several times to lunge at Andrew, but the others held her back. Eventually, she collapsed into a chair, wiping away her tears as she cursed him."Why did you insist on having another child at your age? If you were going to have him, then you should've raised him properly! You should've taught him right
