Chapter 6

Penulis: Lilly Little
Six months after Madison and I got married, Grace announced that she was three months pregnant, almost two months further along than Madison.

I was too stunned to speak.

At first, Madison couldn't accept it either. She tried to talk her mother out of having the baby, but Grace immediately burst into tears.

"I always wanted another child, but I never got the chance. Now I finally do. Your father has always wanted a son to carry on the family name. How can I take that away from him?"

To win Madison over, Grace even promised to put a two-story rental property in our names.

In the end, Madison accepted it, though none of us knew whether the pregnancy would turn out to be a blessing or a disaster.

From that point on, I became the busiest person in the house.

I cooked, did the laundry, and took care of nearly every household chore. No matter how exhausted I was after work, I came home to another full shift.

The first woman I ever cared for while she recovered from childbirth wasn't my wife. It was my mother-in-law.

Grace gave birth two months before Madison did. She was too cheap to hire a postpartum doula or even a night nurse. She insisted that with three other adults in the house, we could take turns caring for the baby and manage just fine.

But that wasn't how things worked out.

Madison spent every day stretched out on the couch, saying she was too uncomfortable in the last few months of pregnancy to do anything. Andrew kept his radio close, but pretended not to hear whenever Grace called for him.

That left everything to me. I cooked, changed and washed cloth diapers, and handled whatever else needed to be done.

It was one of the darkest periods of my life.

I worked nonstop at the office all day, then came home to another round of chores that lasted late into the night. I was so exhausted and overwhelmed that I nearly sank into depression.

As Simon got older and started school, taking care of him became less physically demanding, but the financial pressure only got worse.

Grace and Andrew had lived in the area for years. Besides their house, they owned a small commercial building, and the rent it brought in was their only source of income.

At first, it was enough for them to live comfortably.

After Simon was born, the money no longer went far enough. Neither of them wanted to work, and they considered even a part-time job beneath them, so they began expecting Madison and me to support them.

I didn't know how they managed to get inside Madison's head, but she devoted herself to Simon without a word of complaint, almost as if he were her own son.

Simon always got the best food first. He got the first pick of the toys before Zoe was allowed to touch them.

Even on Zoe's birthday, Simon had to blow out the candles as many times as he wanted before we could relight them for her.

Whenever they fought, Zoe was always blamed.

If Simon was upset, he took it out on her toys. If he got a bad grade, he came home and ripped up Zoe's test paper so badly that it couldn't even be taped back together.

When the school offered several summer camp options in fourth grade, we could only afford to send one of them on the nicest trip.

Madison didn't hesitate. She chose the weeklong luxury camp for Simon, while Zoe had to settle for a local day camp.

Thankfully, Zoe was a thoughtful child. With plenty of reassurance from me, she grew into a cheerful, generous girl with a strong sense of self.

I took the keys from Vanessa and walked Zoe toward our new home.

The moment I opened the door, Zoe started jumping up and down.

"Dad, is this place really ours? Just ours? Can I jump around? Can I sing as loud as I want? Can I hang my drawings on the walls without anyone tearing them down again?"

I nodded through my tears.

My sweet Zoe was finally free. She would never again have to tiptoe around everyone's moods or make herself small just to keep the peace.

"I'm not curious," I said. "I already figured it out."The moment Madison came to ask me for money and let the word redevelopment slip, I had pretty much pieced together what had happened.Madison cared about money more than anything, so William used that to lure her in. He put a younger, attentive man in front of her to flatter her and tell her exactly what she wanted to hear. With Madison caught up in the promise of a windfall and a new romance, why would she give me another thought?William arranged for Jerry to meet her through a minor fender bender. They exchanged numbers, started talking, and stayed in touch.Jerry played the part perfectly. He drove Madison to and from work, helped with heavy chores around the house, and filled the role I had left behind after moving out.One day, he casually showed her a doctored redevelopment map. The market on Easton Road was clearly marked inside the proposed buyout zone.People had been saying for years that the Easton Road market mi

Ten days after Simon threw the fish tank out the window, Madison came to see me.She looked completely worn out, and her voice was hoarse. After hesitating for a long time, she finally asked me for a loan."I sold my mom's apartment, but it still wasn't enough to cover the girl's medical bills. I wouldn't be here if I had any other option. Please lend me 200 grand. I'll pay you back as soon as we receive the buyout money for the commercial property.""Buyout money?" I stared at her.Panic flashed across her face, as though she had just realized she had said too much. She forced an awkward smile.I didn't bother asking what she meant. Whatever was happening with that property had nothing to do with me anymore."I'm sorry, Madison. It's not that I don't want to help. I can't. "The last time your brother pushed someone down the stairs, the hospital bills and settlement for the mother and baby came to almost 300 thousand. Every penny came out of my account."You know better than a

As Simon screamed, he shoved Grace toward us with all his strength. At first, she tried to coax Zoe into putting down the keyboard. When that didn't work, she lost her temper and snapped at her."You ungrateful little brat! Why do you always have to fight your uncle over everything? No wonder your mother doesn't like you. You're stubborn as a mule!"Zoe's eyes filled with fear. She shrank behind me, but she still held tightly to the keyboard.I took her hand and said, "It's alright, Zoe. Keep your keyboard. We're going home."Before I could take a single step, a deafening crash sounded behind us. Even I flinched.I spun around and saw Simon wildly swinging a baseball bat at everything within reach. The first blow shattered the glass coffee table. As he swung the bat, he screamed, "That's what you get for taking it! That's what you get for not listening to me! That's what you get for not getting it back!"His second swing slammed into the refrigerator, leaving a deep dent in th

Before I could give it any more thought, William called."So? Is it official?"I looked down at the divorce papers still clutched in my hand. "Yeah. It's done.""Good. Any longer, and my brother might've worked himself to death. Drinks tonight? We owe the guy who pulled this off."I froze. His brother? The guy who pulled this off? Before I could ask what he meant, a message came through from Madison. I told William I would call him back and ended the call.Madison said that now that we were divorced, she wanted nothing more to do with me. She told me to come by that afternoon and clear out everything belonging to Zoe and me. Anything left behind after that would be thrown away. The way she was rushing to cut all ties only made me more curious about what William had done to make her agree to the divorce so quickly.I picked Zoe up from school and took her back to the house to collect our things. I brought her along because many of her favorite toys were still there. We had

I stood in the doorway and refused to let Madison inside. For once, she pulled a hair clip from her purse and called into the apartment, "Zoe, it's me! I brought you a pretty hair clip. Come see!"Zoe sat in the living room with her back to Madison, quietly drawing. She didn't even turn around.Madison's expression darkened. "You're unbelievable! Have you been turning Zoe against me and teaching her not to see me as her mother?"I let out a cold laugh."So you do remember you're her mother. "How many times have you actually held her since she was born? You stopped breastfeeding her when she was two months old so you could take care of Simon instead. Some mother you are!"Have you ever trimmed her nails? Braided her hair? Did you even know she once had a cavity so painful she couldn't sleep? "When she was in the hospital with pneumonia and the other kids cried for their mothers during their shots, did you ever notice the way she watched them?"You don't deserve to call yourse

The pregnant woman fell down about 13 steps and went into shock.Terrified, Andrew called 911, then ordered Grace to take Simon somewhere and hide him. He told them not to come back or show their faces under any circumstances.I sighed, pulled out my phone, and called Vanessa. After briefly explaining what had happened, I asked her to keep an eye on Zoe because I might not make it home that night.Vanessa agreed without hesitation and told me to take care of whatever I needed to without worrying about Zoe.A wave of gratitude washed over me, and I thanked her sincerely.-Every minute we spent waiting outside the operating room felt unbearable. The pregnant woman's mother tried several times to lunge at Andrew, but the others held her back. Eventually, she collapsed into a chair, wiping away her tears as she cursed him."Why did you insist on having another child at your age? If you were going to have him, then you should've raised him properly! You should've taught him right
