Chapter 2

Penulis: Nameless
Five minutes later, the phone in Andy's office rang. He picked up, murmuring "mm-hmm" a few times, and visibly relaxed as the call went on.

When he hung up, he came back out with both hands in his pockets and looked down at me. "Just wait."

That was all he said before walking off down the hall with Jason.

A moment later, my phone rang. It was Michael.

When I answered, his tone was much softer, almost friendly.

"Natalie, I just spoke to Andy about what happened. He said you were slacking off this morning, leaning against the windowsill and staring into space?"

I didn't answer.

"He's new to the job, so he's going to be a little strict. He's only trying to do what's best for the company. You did great last year, but this year is just getting started. You need to get back into work mode.

"Maybe you misunderstood him? Don't make such a big deal out of it. We're all just trying to do what's best for the company."

My fingers tightened around the phone until they went pale.

I looked toward the end of the hallway. Andy and Jason were standing by the corner, smiling at each other. Then I looked down at my shattered laptop.

"Mr. Cannon, I understand," I said quietly.

My phone buzzed with a message from a recruiter.

"Mr. Larkin wants to know if you've made a decision yet."

I deleted the message without replying.

The next afternoon, the company held its New Year kickoff meeting.

The conference room was packed. I sat against the wall in the very back row, with two small bandages on my hand.

Andy stood onstage with his suit neatly buttoned. Behind him, the projector displayed a slogan in huge white letters against a red background that read, "New Start. New Rules. New Success."

He picked up the microphone and looked around the room before his gaze finally settled in my direction.

"I know this company used to have certain 'special' employees who thought doing well in the past meant they could show up late, leave early, skip company events, and ignore the rules."

No one made a sound.

Andy brought the microphone closer and raised his voice. "Starting today, there will be no more special treatment! Everyone has to clock in, attend meetings, and submit daily and weekly reports!"

He paused, then fixed me with a hard look. "That includes certain people who think the rules don't apply to them."

Someone in the front row started clapping.

Jason stood up and clapped louder than anyone else, turning around to look at me as he did. A few more people joined in, and scattered applause spread through the room.

I didn't move.

After the meeting, people started filing out.

I was the last to get up. I had just reached the door when Jason caught up with me, a pink form in his hand.

"Natalie, wait."

He slapped it into my hand. "20,000 dollars. Pay it to Finance by the end of the day, or it'll count as an unexcused absence. Mr. Hampton said the rules apply to everyone. No exceptions."

I glanced at the fine notice, then looked back at him. "My laptop was smashed. How am I supposed to work?"

Jason grinned. "Was it a company laptop? Figure it out yourself. Since it was yours, just buy another one. It's not like you can't afford it."

He slipped both hands into his pockets and cocked his head.

"Oh, and you're being moved to the desk by the entrance, next to the restroom. Your old desk is going to the new hire. Go move your stuff now. They'll be here this afternoon."

I didn't answer. I walked past him and headed back to the office. At my desk, I bent down and started pulling things out of the drawers.

There were a few notebooks, a mug, an unopened box of pens, and the crystal trophy I'd received at last year's company celebration. It was engraved with the words "Outstanding Contribution Award."

Michael paused and gave a bitter smile that looked more like a grimace."I was blind," he said.A few people nearby glanced over and started whispering. Trevor stood a short distance away but made no move to come over.Michael continued, his voice getting quieter. "I've lost everything. The company's gone, and my reputation is ruined. I sold my house last month, and it still wasn't enough to pay off my debts."My wife took the kids and went back to her parents. I haven't seen them in three months."He looked up at me, his eyes bloodshot. "I'm not asking you to forgive me. I just wanted you to know that you were right."His lips trembled. "I-I had it coming."Silence stretched between us. The music and voices around us seemed to fade into the distance. All I could hear clearly was Michael's heavy breathing.I looked at him. Three months ago, he'd been sitting in his spacious office, telling me not to make such a big deal out of things. Now he stood in front of me, thin and worn

I turned around to find Rosa standing a couple of steps away. She wore a plain coat that looked out of place among all the suits and formal dresses in the ballroom. She wasn't holding a drink. Her hands were clasped tightly in front of her, her knuckles white."What are you doing here?" I asked.Rosa took half a step closer. "I-I quit."I looked at her.She bit her lip, her voice tight. "Astrel Group is really falling apart. Renvara Tech acquired part of its business last month. You probably already know about that."I nodded. She went on. "I heard Andy got a job as a manager at a small company, but he didn't even last two months. He got fired after getting on the wrong side of someone. After that, no one seemed to know where he'd gone."Jason went back to his hometown and hasn't posted anything on social media in two weeks."Then word got around that Andy had applied to more than a dozen other companies, but none of them would hire him once they ran a background check. By now

It was Michael's car.I walked out of the hotel and found the black Mercedes parked right outside the main entrance, its hazard lights blinking.Michael was leaning against the car. The second he saw me, he straightened and hurried over.In just two weeks, he looked like a different man. His temples were streaked with gray, and his eyes were sunken. He was still wearing the same tailored suit, but now it hung loosely on him."Natalie! You finally agreed to see me."I stopped three steps away. "Mr. Cannon, what is it?"He rubbed his hands together and moved half a step closer. "Natalie, the company is really struggling. Please come back. Name your terms, and I'll agree to anything."Andy's already been fired, and Jason's been transferred out. If you're still angry, tell me what else you want me to do."I looked at him and suddenly laughed. "Mr. Cannon, do you really think this is about getting even?"He froze.I spoke calmly. "When I called you, you chose to believe Andy and t

It was Rosa Reed. She used to work with me at Astrel Group and sat diagonally across from me. She was quiet, never spoke up in meetings, and always brought her own lunch. The moment she saw me, her face went bright red and she froze. "M-Ms. Sadler…"I smiled at her. "It's been a while, Rosa."She dropped her gaze, her voice barely above a whisper. "H-How have you been?"I leaned against the wall. "Pretty good. You?"She rubbed her hands together nervously, her knuckles turning red. "I-I'm doing okay."We stood there in silence for a couple of seconds. Then Rosa looked up, her eyes reddening. "Ms. Sadler, that day when they were giving you such a hard time, I-I was too scared to say anything. I'm sorry."I met her eyes and gave her shoulder a light pat. "It's okay. That's all in the past now."She blinked hard, fighting back tears, but her voice still trembled. "Ms. Sadler, the company is actually…"She stopped, like she didn't know how to continue.I looked at her and waite

Hushed voices drifted out of the break room."Did you hear? Andy got fired.""Serves him right. Of all people to get on the wrong side of, he picked Natalie.""I saw him smash her laptop that day. I still don't know what he was thinking. She brought in 200 million dollars in business. How was he ever going to make up for that?""Mr. Cannon got hit too. I heard the board suspended his bonus for six months.""He was always telling everyone to think about the big picture. Well, so much for the big picture."Andy clenched his fists and turned back toward his office. At 3:00 pm, he walked out of the building with a cardboard box in his arms. Jason followed behind him, and neither of them said a word.Meanwhile, at Renvara Tech headquarters, I sat in my office in the Strategic Development department. The city skyline stretched beyond the floor-to-ceiling windows.A newly signed contract sat on my desk. The client had previously been Astrel Group's biggest account, and the deal was w

The call ended.Michael slumped back in his chair and stared at the ceiling, motionless for a long moment.Meanwhile, Andy sat in his office, typing away with a smug smile. The new staffing changes were already in place, and he'd put one of his own people in my position. As far as he was concerned, everything was under control. The door flew open.Jason rushed in, his face pale as he waved his phone. "M-Mr. Hampton! Natalie joined Renvara Tech!"Andy's fingers froze over the keyboard. "What?"Jason shoved the phone in front of him. "Renvara Tech! Trevor Larkin! They just announced it. Look!"Andy stared at the photo of me standing beside Trevor. I was wearing a much sharper suit than I had the day before. His mouth tightened into a thin smile. "So what? She went to another company. What does that have to do with us?"Jason's voice shook. "Mr. Hampton, she handled several of our biggest clients by herself last year. I just heard from Mr. Waller's office. They said they're reco
